Years of translation experience: 1. Registered at ProZ.com: Nov 2018. Became a member: Nov 2018.
I have pursued several different careers over the years, before establishing myself as an independent translator. This previous experience is a great asset when it comes to translating. See my language qualifications and fields of expertise below:
French (native): I was born in France, where I have lived for most of my life. All of my degrees were obtained in France.
American English (C2-bilingual) - BA: Besides my formal studies (BA in English language, literature and culture with University François Rabelais, Tours), I've lived and worked in Kentucky, USA. I have a deep understanding of American culture and keep strong links with this country to this day.
Swedish (C1-fluent) - MA: I started studying Swedish on my own as a teenager and later got a BA in Swedish language, literature and culture from Sorbonne University, where I am currently enrolled in a master course (year 2) in Nordic Studies. I also took a summer course on Swedish language and literature with Malungs folkhögskola in 2016 and I keep working on my Swedish skills regularly.
Education and Pedagogy --> experienced language teacher
2010: I started working as a substitute English Teacher to French students aged 11-18
2012-2014: I became certified and started teaching full time while receiving an extensive training in pedagogy.
2017: I taught Swedish at Sorbonne University. There I was free to build my curriculum entirely from scratch. To accommodate the multi-level class (from complete beginner to intermediary), I created my own material to make sure my class was always both challenging and fun for all my students (using gamification, role play and relying on authentic sources). It was a very satisfying and successful experience.
I'm passionate about autonomous learning. I have a long experience of learning various languages, both in school and as an autodidact. Recently I've learned to be more systematic and efficient in my studies: I've participated in several Autodidacts' Academies with Lydia Machova's Language Mentoring program.
Needless to say, I particularly enjoy translating documents pertaining to education.
Linguistics --> MA in Linguistics / Research
As part of my MA in Nordic Studies, I specialize in Linguistics, more specifically on syntax. I am currently writing my second thesis on Swedish auxiliary verbs. I have also worked on: grammaticalization, Old Norse, word classes, field linguistics. Academic research has prepared me for terminology research, allowing me to sometimes translate outside my area of expertise, for examples on Health and Medicine documents for Translators Without Borders.
Social sciences and Humanities
My education has given me a broad knowledge in various fields: sociology, history, geography, psychology, philosophy, religion - all fields for which I always had a strong interest. Even as a teenager, I was an avid reader of Science & Vie, and I usually went straight to the Human science articles.
Because of my academic background I feel particularly at ease translating or reviewing academic papers in Human Sciences of Literature.
Beyond that, I am also very interested in Politics. I have followed Politics related news in France and in the USA daily for the past 20 years and I would love to specialize in that field should the opportunity arise.
My language studies (BA in English, BA in Swedish, MA in Nordic Studies) all had a very strong focus on literature. I have also studied Swedish literature with Malungs folkhögskola in 2016.
Business and Accounting --> Assistant manager
2 year vocational degree in International Commerce.
2014-2017: Assistant manager for a restaurant in Paris, where I managed the employees, did administrative work, dealt with government administrations and suppliers. My absolute favorite task was accounting.
Finance and banking --> Back Office Operator
1998-2005: I worked in back-offices in Société Générale's Capital Markets division, on forex and derivatives products (CDS). I enjoyed the dynamic work environment. My duties were mostly administrative, but I became familiar with the financial products. I used English daily in my communications with banking counterparts all around the world as well as with my foreign colleagues.
I was eventually assigned to investigative tasks: besides handling our counterparts complaints, I was able to recover millions of euros in capital and interests dating several years back which was incredibly satisfying.
