The study of advertising includes a strong psychological aspect. Information processing and persuasion mechanisms are among the most popular topics in the field. Priming holds its own, rather noticeable place in exploring what makes advertising effective. The purpose of this article is 1) to demonstrate that the studies which deal with priming effects in advertising are not homogenous in their understanding of the concept of priming, and 2) to show that priming itself embraces different interpretations and needs further clarification of how it works.
In one of the pioneering studies connecting advertising and priming [1], the author asserted that ad context affects participants’ information processing. The ad context activates (the verb used as a substitute for ‘primes’) certain attributes, but not for their own sake. Activated (or made accessible, another substitute for priming action) attributes make possible various evaluations of something else, for example, a certain product. The author also distinguishes between cognitive and affective priming. The former reflects the accessibility of attributes, and the latter captures an overall negative or positive tone of an ad. This tone accompanies a message and affects evaluations of this message. The study demonstrated that cognitive priming affects how the participants evaluate the product, and affective priming forms the participants’ evaluations of the ad. This important study has many merits, but priming itself is defined vaguely in it. It is not referred to as a process, or a mechanism, or something else, but there were a couple of references to “priming effects” in the text.
In a more recent study, Kemps, Tiggemann, & Hollitt suggested that advertising of a product leads to activation of a thought about it, then this activation triggers motivations to consume [2]. The authors talk about priming effects influencing and preceding accessibility and motivation, placing weight on the exposure part of this process. Two different groups in the study both responded to food ads with the increased activation of food-related cognitions, but only one of them, which included overweight subjects, formed noticeable intentions to eat. This study made a valuable contribution to helping understand that, in priming, cognitions may be activated in most of the cases, while motivations - only in some. However, lack of definitional description of priming leaves room for speculating why there is such a discrepancy.
Another study on food advertising and priming [3] focused on the automatic, unconscious effects of priming, which were not a dominant theme in the first two studies. Priming is referred to as priming methods necessary for activating behaviors and intents. Findings confirmed the hypotheses on priming effects, but the subsequent discussion of their potential mechanisms are even more relevant for the current discussion. At least two mechanisms were identified: perceptive mechanism, when the very activation of cognitions leads to certain evaluations and intentions and behaviors; and motivational mechanism, when certain goals and needs dominate intentions and behaviors when activated. The authors acknowledged the complexity of a priming phenomenon: “In reality, the power of advertising may be its ability to prime behaviors through multiple mechanisms at the same time.” (p.411). This study depicted how priming works in detail, however, as the previous ones, it did not define priming directly taking it for granted.

El priming tiene su propio, o más bien, un evidente lugar en la exploración de qué hace efectiva a la publicidad. El propósito de este artículo es 1) demostrar que los estudios los cuales tratan con los efectos del priming en publicidad no son homogéneos en su entendimiento del concepto mismo y, 2) mostrar que el priming por si mismo abarca diferentes interpretaciones y necesita más claridad en cómo trabaja.
En uno de los estudios pioneros en relacionar la publicidad y el priming [1], el autor afirmó que el contexto publicitario afecta el procesamiento de la información por parte de los participantes. El contexto publicitario activa (el verbo usado como sustituto de «prima») ciertos atributos, pero no por su propio bien. Los atributos activados (o accesibles, otro sustituto para la acción de «primar») hacen posible varias evaluaciones de algo más, como por ejemplo, un producto determinado. El autor también distingue entre priming cognitivo y afectivo. The nature and function of the book cover
Book covers can be seen as a doorway through which we glimpse the text. The illustrated font is an advertisement and a tease, partially revealing, partially concealing the content. It is the threshold between the public commercial arena where the book is for sale and the more intimate world of the text where the author speaks to us alone. In the bookshop or the library it is a place of negotiation and decision. The cover dallies with us – should we open the book? Should we take it and own it? Will it give us the enjoyment we seek?

1. Covering (and uncovering) the ‘truth’ of the book…
In So Many Books – an essay on the ever-growing number of books being published worldwide – Gabriel Zaid observes that “there are more books to contemplate than stars in a night on the high seas,” and wonders “how is a single book among the millions to find its readers.”1 One answer is, of course, the cover.2 In spite of the adage ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ a book and its cover are always intertwined. So, what is the nature and function of that interaction as well as the issues that influence it?
Let us consider this cover:

This image – a black-and-white photograph of the partly covered face of a young Caucasian female of fair complexion with seemingly blue eyes and blond hair – is as suggestive as it is conventional, almost stereotypical. It could very well be an artistic photo of the girl next door. Now, the girl’s mouth is criss-crossed by her loose hair. A number of interpretations can be put forward. Perhaps the girl does not want to, or is not able to, or is too shy to speak; perhaps it is better for her not to speak; perhaps she is not allowed to speak. The answer may be found in her gaze: the eyes are mischievously fixed: they stare, suggesting that they can communicate more ‘truthfully’ than words. Looking at this image, and reading the title, one quickly figures out that the book involves lying and that the liar, or the victim of lies, is likely to be the young female portrayed on the cover.
This is what any book cover is designed to do: to draw the attention of potential readers and persuade them to find out more about the book. So let us continue. The book in question is Justine Larbalestier’s latest novel, Liar, and the reader who picks up this book looking for more details finds this on the back over:
Secrets, lies, murder and betrayal.
Micah Wilkins is a liar. But when her boyfriend, Zach, dies under brutal circumstances, the shock might be enough to set her straight. Or maybe not.
Especially when lying comes as naturally to her as breathing. Was Micah dating Zach? Did they kiss? Did she see him the night he died? And is she really hiding a family secret? Where does the actual truth lie?
Liar is a breathtaking roller-coaster read that will have you gasping for the truth until the very last page. Honestly.3
The words chosen to integrate the images clearly exploit ideas associated with lying – to its ultimate consequence: death. The choice of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs (“secrets”; “lies”; betrayal’; “liar”; “shock”; “might be”; “straight”; “maybe not”; “really”; “hiding”; “truth”; “honestly”) reminds readers that the line between telling the truth and lying can be not only very thin but may also be very dangerous. This wording therefore acts as a (not so) subtle invitation to readers to find out for themselves.
And readers of the US edition of Liar were in for an unexpected surprise or, rather, for a major lie: Micah is black with curly dark hair. The Black American community protested about the cover; their protests were fuelled by their belief that, for commercial reasons, US publishers avoided portraying Blacks on their book covers. Following these protests, which attracted headlines worldwide, the publishers re-issued the book with this cover:

Now, which of the two covers best reflects the text? The second cover shows an attractive young woman of indeterminate race; the fearful atmosphere of the first cover is replaced by one of mild sexual tension. Does the removal of the first cover’s blatant lie improve or detract from the cover’s relation to the text?
The most interesting aspect of this cover-saga is that covers may well change how people read books. So let us consider another example, prompted by the recent rediscovery from Public TV Channel 13 in New York of a rare piece of footage.

This still is from an old episode of USA: The Novel and features Vladimir Nabokov browsing through various translations of Lolita.4 Now considered a most important work of literature, Lolita is an excellent example of how book covers can vary. Thanks to the dedication of a German Nabokov scholar, Dieter E. Zimmer, more than 150 book and media covers from 33 countries and over 54 years are available online.5

Las portadas de los libros pueden ser vistas como un portal a través del cual echamos un vistazo al texto. El título ilustrado es una forma de promoción y un avance, que en parte revela y en parte oculta. Este es el umbral entre el ámbito público y comercial, donde el libro está a la venta y el mundo más íntimo del texto, donde el autor nos habla solo a nosotros. La librería es el lugar donde se negocia y se toma una decisión. La portada coquetea con nosotros, ¿deberíamos abrir el libro? ¿Deberíamos tomarlo y quedárnoslo? ¿Nos dará la entretención que buscamos?

1. El cubrir (y descubrir) la «verdad» del libro...
En Los demasiados libros (un ensayo sobre el creciente número de libros siendo publicados alrededor del mundo), Gabriel Zaid, reconocido poeta y ensayista mexicano, observa que «hay más libros que estrellas en una noche en alta mar» y se pregunta «¿cómo puede un libro, entre millones, encontrar sus lectores?» 1 Una respuesta es, por supuesto, la portada. 2 A pesar del dicho «no juzgues un libro por su portada», ambos siempre están entrelazados. Entonces, ¿cuál es la naturaleza y la función de esa interacción? ¿Cuáles son los temas que la influencian?
Consideremos esta portada:
MENTIROSA, PORTADA 1
Esta imagen (una fotografía en blanco y negro de un rostro medianamente cubierto de una joven de rasgos europeos y tez blanca, con aparentes ojos azules y cabello rubio), es tan insinuante como convencional, casi como un estereotipo. Bien podría ser una foto artística de una chica común y corriente. Ahora, la boca de la chica está entrecruzada por su cabello suelto, a lo que se le puede dar más de una interpretación. Quizás la chica no quiere, no puede o es muy tímida para hablar; quizás sea mejor para ella no hablar; quizás no se le permite hablar. La respuesta podría estar en su mirada, la que es maliciosamente penetrante. Su mirada es fija, lo que sugiere que sus ojos comunican más «sinceridad» que las palabras. Al mirar esta imagen y leer el título, uno se puede imaginar de inmediato que el libro involucra mentiras y que la mentirosa, o la víctima de estas mentiras, probablemente sea la joven retratada en la portada.
Este es el motivo por el que se diseña la portada de un libro: llamar la atención de potenciales lectores y persuadirlos para investigar más sobre el libro. Así que continuemos: el libro en cuestión es Mentirosa, la última novela de Justine Larbalestier, escritora australiana de literatura juvenil. Aquel lector que tome este libro y busque más detalles puede encontrar lo siguiente en la contraportada:

Las palabras elegidas para acompañar las imágenes claramente aprovechan las ideas asociadas con mentir, incluso hasta la última consecuencia: morir. La elección de sustantivos, verbos, adjetivos y adverbios («secretos»; «traición»; «mentirosa»; «impacto»; «podría»; «enderezar»; «tal vez no»; «en realidad»; «esconde»; «verdad»; «en serio») le recuerda a los lectores que la línea entre decir la verdad y mentir puede no ser solo delgada, sino que también muy peligrosa. Por lo tanto, este tipo de redacción funciona como una (no tan) sutil invitación a los lectores a descubrirlo por sí mismos.
Y los lectores de la versión estadounidense de Mentirosa se encontraron con una inesperada sorpresa o, más bien, una mentira aún mayor: Micah es afroamericana y tiene un cabello negro y rizado. La comunidad afroamericana protestó sobre la portada, convencidos de que, por razones comerciales, las editoriales de Estados Unidos evitaban utilizar afroamericanos en las portadas de los libros. Tras estas protestas, las que lograron atraer la atención de los medios alrededor del mundo, las editoriales reeditaron el libro con esta nueva portada:

Entonces, ¿cuál de estas dos portadas refleja el texto de mejor manera? La segunda portada muestra a una joven atractiva y de origen indeterminado; la atmósfera temerosa de la primera portada se reemplazó por una de leve tensión sexual. ¿El reemplazo de aquel descaro en la primera portada, mejora la relación de esta con el texto o la empeora?
El aspecto más interesante de esta problemática es que las portadas bien podrían cambiar el cómo las personas leen libros. Así que veamos otro ejemplo, introducido por el redescubrimiento reciente de Canal 13 de la televisión de Nueva York sobre una llamativa pieza de rodaje sin editar.

Esto también viene de un episodio del antiguo programa estadounidense: The Novel, donde el escritor ruso Vladimir Nabokov analiza varias traducciones de Lolita, libro que trata sobre la obsesión de un hombre por una niña de 12 años.4 Este libro, el que ahora es considerado uno de los trabajos literarios más importantes, es un ejemplo excelente de cómo la portada de los libros puede variar. Gracias a la dedicación del alemán Dieter E. Zimmer, quien es un estudioso del trabajo de Nabokov, pueden encontrarse en línea más de 150 libros y portadas de medios de 33 países de los últimos 54 años.5
