Source text - English It is commonplace in current linguistics to state that argumentativity is intrinsic to human language and, for this reason, every utterance is argumentative. This viewpoint is due to Oswald Ducrot and Jean Claude Anscombre‘s studies, who work with rhetorical and argumentation notions. However, one should consider that the meaning of these terms as employed in those French authors‘ work are very different from the rhetoric tradition that dates back to Aristotle. For them, argumentation is the study of the utterance‘s semantic orientation and of the networks that express them. Initially Ducrot postulates the insertion of a ―rhetoric component‖ in the models designed to explain language in use. This module would address the meaning of an utterance in use, i.e., in a communicative situation. At the same time, a linguistic (semantic) component that would regard the langue signification of a certain sentence would be posited. This way, he incorporates the argumentation and the rhetorical issues in the pragmatics-semantic dimension.
Thus, for example, the semantic component confers upon the utterance It is raining too much the signification that the meteorological phenomenon of rain in a very large amount is taking place in that particular moment. Nevertheless, this utterance could be employed in different communicative situations: By two passengers in an airport, who are waiting for a plane to take off; by a referee during a soccer match; by a mother to her son, who is getting ready for his morning jog. It is the rhetorical component that provides an actual meaning to the utterance in each of aforementioned situations, which could be paraphrased, respectively, for example, as follows: a) The plane must not take off due to the severe weather; b) I will interrupt the match because it is impossible to go ahead with it; c) I think it is better for you not to go jogging now.
It should be noted that the rhetoric component rules are not ―linguistic‖ rules in the strictest sense, but they ―are justifiable irrespective of its use in semantic description and they can be certified, for example, by general psychology, by logic, the literary critics, etc.‖ [our translation] (DUCROT, 1987, p.17).
If rhetoric concerns itself with the meaning of the utterance in use, i.e., in a particular situation of enunciation, rhetoric becomes synonymous with pragmatics.
Translation - Portuguese É comum na linguística atual afirmar que a argumentatividade é intrínseca à linguagem humana e, portanto, todo enunciado é argumentativo. Esse ponto de vista se dá por conta dos estudos de Oswald Ducrot e Jean Claude Anscombre, que trabalham com noções de retórica e argumentação. Contudo, deve-se considerar que o significado desses termos empregado no trabalho desses autores franceses é muito diferente da tradição retórica que remonta a Aristóteles. Para eles, a argumentação é o estudo da orientação semântica do enunciado e das redes que a expressam. Inicialmente, Ducrot postula a inserção de um componente retórico nos modelos designados para a explicação da linguagem em uso. Esse modelo abordaria o significado de um enunciado em uso, por exemplo, em uma situação comunicativa. Ao mesmo tempo, um componente linguístico (semântico) que consideraria a significação langue de uma determinada sentença seria proposto. Desse modo, ele incorpora as questões de argumentação e retórica na dimensão pragmático-semântica.
Dessa forma, por exemplo, o componente semântico confere ao enunciado “Está chovendo demais” a significação de que o fenômeno meteorológico da chuva em excesso está acontecendo naquele momento específico. Entretanto, esse enunciado poderia ser utilizado em situações comunicativas diferentes: por dois passageiros em um aeroporto, que estão esperando um avião decolar; por um árbitro durante uma partida de futebol; por uma mãe para seu filho, que está se preparando para sua corrida matinal. É o componente retórico que fornece um significado verdadeiro ao enunciado em cada uma das situações mencionadas, que poderiam ser parafraseadas, respectivamente, por exemplo, da seguinte maneira: a) O avião não deve decolar devido às condições climáticas severas; b) Eu vou interromper a partida porque é impossível continuá-la; c) Eu acho melhor você não correr agora.
Cabe ressaltar que as regras do componente retórico não são regras linguísticas no sentido mais estrito, mas são justificáveis independentemente do seu uso na descrição semântica e podem ser certificadas, por exemplo, pela psicologia geral, pela lógica, por críticos literários, etc. [tradução nossa] (DUCROT, 1987, p. 17).
Se a retórica se envolver com o significado do enunciado em uso, por exemplo, em uma situação específica de enunciação, ela se torna sinônimo da pragmática.

Source text - English Since the early 1960’s, the study of translation has begun to conquer a more defined space within academic institutions and publications. Since then, all the basically essentialist attempts at widening and consolidating such a space have declared their interest in making that study as rational and as systematic as possible, so that it would be recognized as a legitimate research area which should also legislate over all translation practices, no matter which languages, goals or circumstances were involved. This paper intends to present a critical account of the main attempts at occupying the academic terrain claimed by "translation studies," arguing that what has motivated them, above all, is a certain imperialistic thrust in which what is actually at stake is the prestige and the power of the trends in the name of which they intend to discipline the translator’s task.
Translation - Portuguese RESUMO: Desde o início da década de 1960, o estudo da tradução tem conquistado um maior espaço nas instituições e publicações acadêmicas. A partir de então, todas as tentativas basicamente essencialistas de aumento e consolidação desse espaço têm demonstrado interesse em manter o estudo da tradução o mais racional e sistemático quanto possível, de forma que ele seja reconhecido como uma área de pesquisa legítima que também deve legislar sobre todas as práticas de tradução, independentemente dos idiomas, objetivos ou circunstâncias envolvidas. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar um relato crítico das principais tentativas de ocupação do território acadêmico reivindicado pelos “estudos da tradução”, demonstrando que sua motivação foi, principalmente, um certo impulso imperialista no qual o que está realmente em jogo é o prestígio e o poder das tendências em nome das quais se pretende disciplinar a tarefa do tradutor.
