About me

My name
is Phoebe, and I am a native English-speaking translator based in Manchester,
UK. I specialise in law, EU and music. I also offer proofreading, revision,
editing and English transcription services. I have been translating since 2016
and am an active member of the NWTN (North West Translation Network).

I prioritise not only accuracy, but also the flow of my translations. I seek to harmonise the style of language with the message and
context of the source material.

I hold the Trinity Cert. TESOL
qualification, which has helped me in my own learning of foreign languages and it has also given me a deeper understanding of my mother tongue.

interest in languages began early, growing up in a bilingual setting in
Wales. Fast-forward to 2016, and I have dedicated six years of higher
education study to languages, translation and law. I completed an undergraduate
degree in French and German at the University of Manchester in 2014, which
included spending a year living abroad. For the first half of the year I chose
to live in Brussels in order to study translation and to be at the heart of the
EU, and the second half of the year in Leipzig, Germany. I followed this with a
Master’s degree in translation at Aberystwyth University. I engaged with a
wide variety of areas of study, such as linguistics and translation theory, and
with translation projects such as subtitling, poetry, literary translation,
technical translation (wind energy production) and achieved a distinction.
During my master’s study, I became fascinated by the role of language within
the context of law, so I followed my instincts to complete another year of
study to gain the Graduate Diploma in Law qualification in 2016. This course is
famously intensive and condenses a three-year undergraduate degree into one
year, which covers all the main areas of the English legal system.

Law and

With a
legal qualification and having worked in a contracts role at a prestigious UK
university, I can apply my knowledge and experience with commercial contracts,
research contracts and drafting skills to my translation work. My experience
negotiating contract terms and conditions gives me an excellent grounding for
aiding with and facilitating communication with my clients as to their precise
needs and aims. My niche areas within the area of contracts are: research and
commercial contracts, with emphasis on intellectual property rights and
publishing rights.
My previous role in contracts involved a particular emphasis on collaborative
research projects
and clinical trials with pharmaceutical companies, and
therefore I would consider translating these kinds of contracts.

combined my legal background with translation skills while working as a
lawyer-linguist for the European Court of Justice in 2016-17. I gained
excellent legal research skills in the use of specialized language and
glossaries. I am therefore familiar with EU law and the established working
norms and standards of the EU institutions, which gives me the necessary
experience to take on EU-related projects.

Another of my specialist areas is the arts and culture,
specifically classical music. My passion from a young age has been music. I
studied classical music and performance to an advanced level at the prestigious
Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, as I can apply this expert knowledge
and experience to texts about music and performance.
