Accounting among the illiterate – cutting of notches
Keywords: notches, barter trade, records and documentation, Polish economic instructions
Abstract
The history of accounting had begun long before human beings mastered abstract thinking or writing. Its origins are rooted back in the exchange of goods. In primitive communities, uneven distribution of natural resources forced the creation of intertribal trade relations. The earliest form of such "trade" was a direct exchange of food and most necessary items. In today's terms, this exchange, if it came to fruition, was referred to as barter trade. It did not require money as a medium of exchange or accounting records confirming its accomplishment.
Over time, the need of counting (and remembering) developed. For that reason, warriors, marriageable girls, held animals or goods belonging to a given community were enumerated. Archaeological discoveries prove that notches in animal bones or on wooden slates may have served this purpose. They might have been documents of some type. The oldest excavations of such "documents" date back to approximately 30 thousand years before Christ.
The purpose of this article is to present hypotheses regarding the use of bone notches by our ancestors in the prehistoric period. The most common hypothesis in the literature states that these notches constituted a form of accounting documents. Numerous examples of the use of notches in trade and business in modern times between people of whom at least one was illiterate, seem to confirm this hypothesis.
The following sources were used to write this article: the monumental two-volume work by George Ifrah entitled “The Universal History of Numbers” and Polish economic instructions from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
