Source text - English Above certain temperatures the amount of water lost through leaves' stomata rises so much plants stop their photosynthesis and do not grow. The solar farm planned by the project runs seawater evaporators, pumping damp, cool air through the greenhouses. This reduces the warmth inside by about 15C, compared with the temperature outside.
At the other end of the greenhouse from the evaporators, water vapour is condensed. Some of this fresh water is used to water the crops, some for cleaning the solar mirrors.
"So we've got conditions in the greenhouse of high humidity and lower temperature," said Paton. "The crops sitting in this slightly steamy, humid condition can grow fantastically well."
The designers said that virtually any vegetables could be grown in the greenhouses. The demonstration plants already produce lettuces, peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. The nutrients to grow the plants could come from local seaweed or be extracted from the seawater.
Michael Pawlyn, of Exploration Architecture, based in London, worked on the Eden Project for seven years and is now part of the Sahara Forest team. He said that the Seawater Greenhouse and CSP provided substantial synergies for each other. "Both technologies work extremely well in hot, dry, desert locations. CSP produces a lot of waste heat and we'd be able to use that to evaporate more seawater from the greenhouse. And CSP needs a supply of clean, de-mineralised water in order for the [electricity generating] turbines to function and to keep the mirrors at peak output. It just so happens the Seawater Greenhouse produces large quantities of this."

Dal lato opposto della serra rispetto a quello in cui si trovano gli evaporatori, il vapore acqueo viene condensato e l’acqua dolce risultante viene usata in parte per l’irrigazione delle colture ed in parte per la pulizia degli specchi solari.
“Grazie a questo sistema la serra presenta un clima ad alta umidità e bassa temperatura”, ha dichiarato Paton, che ha poi aggiunto: “le coltivazioni che si trovano in questo clima leggermente umido crescono magnificamente”.
I progettisti hanno affermato che di fatto si potrebbe coltivare qualsiasi tipo di ortaggio all’interno della serra: nelle installazioni dimostrative si producono già insalate verdi, peperoni, cetrioli e pomodori, inoltre i nutrienti per le piante si possono estrarre da alghe locali o dall’acqua marina.

The core idea of every religion is Unity. Practicing religion means to unify yourself with the divine and so with your fellow humans, for the divine is the unifying aspect of human consciousness.
This idea of Unity does not belong exclusively to Islam. On the contrary, it is at the core of every religion. That is why the Qur’an repeatedly refers to the other “peoples of the Book” and to other prophets that preached the same message. In fact the word Islam originates from the Arabic slm, the root of many words that relate to wholeness and peace. Most scholars translate Islam as voluntary submission to God. A Muslim is someone who submits himself — that is, lives in the perception of Unity.
Islam should not be regarded as a religion that started with Muhammad. Rather it is a current of that broad river of religious wisdom and compassion that has flowed through all cultures and eras. Many Jewish, Persian, and Christian influences can easily be found in Islam, but especially in its more philosophical side, it was strongly influenced by the Neoplatonist philosophers, particularly Plotinus. Plotinus, who lived in the third century AD, went to Persia in the company of the Roman emperor Gordian III and influenced a group of mystics that in later days were called the Sufis. Like Muslims in later centuries, Plotinus put a strong emphasis on the One. But for Plotinus the One was not a personal God, but an impersonal Principle. As we will see, that his concept of the One is more like the original concept of Allah than is the current Christian belief about God.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to describe the underlying Oneness of manifestation. Although one seeks for words, none fit. That is also the problem with the word God. In the way Christians use this word nowadays, God seems to be a kind of superhuman being, a personal God. But that was not always so.
Certain books from the early Christians, such as the Gnostic texts known as the Nag Hammadi library, provide a totally different view of God. Like Plotinus’s idea of the One, this God has no properties. It is not right to think of him as a god or something similar. Everything exists in him. He is illimitable, unsearchable, immeasurable, invisible, unnamable, and eternal, and no one can comprehend him. (See the Apocryphon of John in Robinson, 106.)
Every Muslim, whether Sunni or Shi’ite, whether living in Europe, Pakistan, America, or Arabia, uses the same word to express that Unity: Allah.

Non si dovrebbe considerare l’islam come una religione iniziata con Maometto, ma piuttosto come una corrente di quell’ampio fiume di saggezza religiosa e di compassione che scorre attraverso ogni cultura ed epoca storica. Si possono facilmente trovare nell’islam numerose influenze ebraiche, persiane e cristiane, ma soprattutto nel suo aspetto più filosofico fu fortemente influenzato dai filosofi neoplatonici, in particolar modo Plotino. Quest’ultimo, vissuto nel terzo secolo d.C., si recò in Persia insieme all’imperatore romano Gordiano III e influenzò un gruppo di mistici che vennero successivamente chiamati Sufi. Come fecero i musulmani nei secoli successivi, Plotino mise una grande enfasi sull’idea dell’Uno, che per Plotino non consisteva in una divinità personale, bensì in un Principio impersonale. Come vedremo, il suo concetto di Uno è più vicino alla concezione originale di Allah di quanto non lo sia l’attuale idea cristiana di Dio.
È difficile, se non impossibile, descrivere l’Unicità sottostante alla manifestazione. Per quanto ci si sforzi di trovare le parole giuste, nessuna riesce nell’intento. Lo stesso problema si presenta con la parola “Dio”. Nel modo in cui i cristiani la usano oggigiorno, Dio sembra coincidere con una sorta di essere sovrumano, una divinità personale, eppure non è sempre stato così.
Certi libri dei primi cristiani, ad esempio i testi gnostici noti come codici di Nag Hammadi, ci forniscono una visione completamente diversa di Dio. Analogamente all’idea di Plotino dell’Uno, questo Dio non ha attributi; non è corretto pensarlo come dio o simili; tutto esiste in Lui; non ha limiti, non si può cercare né misurare, è invisibile, innominabile ed eterno, e nessuno può comprenderlo.
Ogni musulmano, sia questo sunnita o sciita, che viva in Europa, in Pakistan, in America o in Arabia, usa la stessa parola per esprimere quest’unità: Allah.

L’installateur de panneaux solaires photovoltaïques est un métier issu de la recherche d’énergies renouvelables. Chez des particuliers ou pour des installations industrielles il pose des capteurs d’énergie solaire pour produire de l’électricité.
Description des tâches / conditions de travail
L’installateur de panneaux solaires photovoltaïques sur un toit procède à une série d’opérations qui doivent s’effectuer dans un ordre précis.
Il dépose les tuiles ou les ardoises du toit, fait de même avec les liteaux (pièces de bois horizontales qui supportent les tuiles) et, si besoin est, les éléments de sous toiture en place.
Pour éviter les infiltrations d’eau, il pose un écran de sous toiture et les supports des capteurs. Il installe ensuite les capteurs eux-mêmes et reconstitue le reste de la toiture si les panneaux ne l’occupent pas entièrement. Il vérifie l’étanchéité de l’installation.
Il procède ensuite à l’installation électrique : pose de la descente des câbles électriques, des onduleurs (système de courants alternatifs), des éléments de sécurité (parafoudre, sectionneur, disjoncteur) et enfin des deux compteurs (un pour le comptage et un pour la non-consommation).
En fait ce métier est au croisement de plusieurs spécialités : couverture, zinguerie, chauffage, électricité, climatique. L’installateur de panneaux doit tenir compte de toutes les consignes et réglementations en vigueur concernant la sécurité des personnes et des biens. Selon le comité national pour la sécurité des usagers de l'électricité, beaucoup d'installations présentent des risques (incendie, électrocution) en raison de l'importance de la demande qui dépasse les capacités d'intervention des professionnels vraiment formés.
L'installateur travaille presque toujours en hauteur et à l’extérieur ; la météo est un facteur à ne pas négliger. Il doit assister l’utilisateur de l’équipement en lui fournissant toutes les explications demandées. En principe, avec la montée en charge des énergies renouvelable, l'installateur de panneaux solaires devrait être un métier d'avenir.
Evolution professionnelle
En tant que salarié, le poseur de panneaux peut progresser en termes de carrière en devenant technicien conseil, en dirigeant une équipe. Un complément de formation peut s’avérer indispensable pour atteindre une qualification à bac + 2 du type DUT génie thermique et énergie.

Di fatto questo mestiere è una combinazione di diverse specialità: tetti, fabbricazione di zinco, riscaldamento, elettricità e clima. L’installatore di pannelli solari deve tener conto di tutte le consegne e le regolamentazioni in vigore rispetto alla sicurezza di persone e beni. Secondo il comitato nazionale francese per la sicurezza degli utilizzatori di elettricità, molti impianti presentano dei rischi (incendio, folgorazione) a causa delle dimensioni della domanda che supera le capacità di intervento di professionisti debitamente formati.
L’installatore lavora quasi ogni giorno in posizioni sopraelevate e all’esterno: le condizioni atmosferiche sono un fattore da non sottovalutare. Deve assistere l’utilizzatore dell’impianto e fornirgli tutte le spiegazioni richieste.
In linea di principio, con l’aumento di popolarità delle energie rinnovabili, l’installatore di pannelli solari dovrebbe essere un mestiere con buone prospettive future.
Evoluzione professionale
In qualità di dipendente, l’installatore di pannelli solari può progredire in termini di carriera diventando consulente tecnico, dirigendo un team. Una formazione supplementare può rivelarsi indispensabile al conseguimento di una qualifica alla bac + 2 tipo DUT ingegneria termica ed energetica.

In spring 2009, President Sarkozy of France announced that Paris would become the ‘first post-Kyoto eco-city’ as part of his ambitious plan to transform the French capital into an expanded, regenerated greater metropolis (Chrisafis, [1]). Later that year, the British government published its decision to build four new ‘eco-towns’ across England, following a two-year and at times heated public consultation process (Department of Communities and Local Government, [2]). In the meantime, on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi the construction of Masdar City [3], the self-proclaimed ‘world’s first carbon-neutral zero-waste’ city is underway, while China is reported to have embarked on an ambitious programme to build some 40 new eco-cities (Wong, [4]).
Thus, in the space of only a few years, in the second half of the 2000s, eco-cities appear to have become something of a global, mainstream phenomenon, with countries and cities competing to take a lead in developing and applying new socio-technological innovations and thus bringing about the next generation of sustainable towns and cities. However, it is not immediately clear exactly how significant a phenomenon eco-cities have become, in terms of both global spread and policy significance. Furthermore, it remains to be seen what are key defining characteristics of eco-cities, and indeed what distinguishes eco-cities from ‘normal’ cities. Finally, light needs to be shed on what gives impulse to the development of eco-city initiatives.
In response, this paper, firstly, aims to map the recent eco-city phenomenon by identifying recent eco-city initiatives, as to date few systematic global surveys have been carried out (for an early survey, with focus on smaller ‘eco-neighbourhoods’, see Barton [5]; for a recent in-depth discussion of several eco-city initiatives, see Downton [6]). Secondly, the paper seeks to identify and define key eco-city features, in order both to discern differences and similarities within the ‘eco-city’ category and to demarcate the boundaries between eco-cities and ‘normal’ cities. Based on this analysis, thirdly, the paper discusses the eco-city phenomenon as a response to the twin issues of global climate change and urbanisation. The paper concludes by sketching out a future research agenda, with special focus on innovation and governance issues.

Così, nell’arco di appena qualche anno, durante la seconda metà degli anni Duemila le città sostenibili sono divenute un fenomeno globale, di massa, che ha visto paesi e città in gara per il primo posto nello sviluppo e nell’applicazione di innovazioni socio-tecnologiche destinate a dar vita alla nuova generazione di città sostenibili. Tuttavia, non è del tutto chiaro quanta importanza abbia di fatto acquisito il fenomeno delle città sostenibili, sia rispetto alla sua diffusione globale che per quanto riguarda il suo ruolo all’interno dei processi legislativi. Inoltre, resta ancora da capire quali siano le caratteristiche chiave che definiscono le città sostenibili, nonché quali fattori le distinguano dalle città “normali”. Infine, occorre far luce su quali siano le motivazioni per le quali sorgono iniziative mirate alla realizzazione di città sostenibili.
Al fine di trovare una risposta ai quesiti appena citati, questo studio si propone, in primo luogo, di mappare il recente fenomeno delle città sostenibili mediante l’identificazione dei progetti di realizzazione recenti, dal momento che, ad oggi, è stato condotto un numero ristretto di indagini sistematiche globali a riguardo (si veda Barton [5] per un’indagine iniziale, incentrata su progetti di città sostenibili su piccola scala definiti “eco-neighbourhood”, ovvero “quartieri sostenibili”; si veda Downton [6] per una recente e approfondita discussione su numerose iniziative di città sostenibili). In secondo luogo, lo studio intende identificare e definire le caratteristiche chiave delle città sostenibili, sia al fine di individuare le differenze e i tratti comuni all’interno della categoria stessa di “città sostenibile”, sia per delimitare il confine tra queste città e quelle “normali”. In terzo luogo, sulla base di tale analisi, lo studio mira ad esaminare il fenomeno delle città sostenibili inteso come risposta ai temi ad esso correlati dei cambiamenti climatici globali e dell’urbanizzazione e si conclude con la stesura sommaria di un futuro programma di ricerca, incentrato in particolare sull’innovazione e sui problemi di governance.

L’IGB-CNR ha identificato il primo caso di difetto nella posizione e nella distanza tra i geni nei malati di ICF, grave immunodeficienza che provoca infezioni, ritardo psicomotorio e mentale e morte. Ma l’osservazione del malposizionamento potrebbe spiegare i meccanismi di altre patologie genetiche e del cancro, offrendo nuovi spunti terapeutici poiché non solo l’alterazione del singolo gene, ma anche lo spostamento dei geni può determinare gravi malattie.
E’ quanto confermato da una ricerca frutto della collaborazione tra il gruppo di lavoro di Maurizio D’Esposito e Maria Matarazzo dell’Istituto di genetica e biofisica del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche di Napoli (IGB-CNR) e quello di Wendy Bickmore dell’MRC (Medical Research Council) di Edimburgo, realizzata grazie ai finanziamenti di Telethon e della Provincia di Napoli.
“Il nostro genoma è una macchina biochimica di straordinaria complessità e funziona in uno spazio tridimensionale - spiega la dr.ssa Matarazzo - Accanto alla sequenza del DNA, esiste un ulteriore repertorio di informazioni, più versatile e complesso, dipendente dall’interazione tra DNA e proteine che, avvolgendosi tra loro, compongono i cromosomi in ogni cellula. Questo codice è detto ‘epigenetico’ e agisce come una serie di manopole che controllano il volume, alzando o abbassando la ‘voce’ dei geni”.
In questo quadro il gruppo dell’IGB-CNR ha ipotizzato che la posizione e la distanza reciproca dei geni nell’ambito dei cromosomi rappresentino due aspetti cruciali per il loro corretto funzionamento.
“Il lavoro congiunto ha condotto all’identificazione del primo caso di un difetto nella posizione e nella distanza reciproca di alcuni geni in pazienti di una malattia genetica umana, la sindrome ICF - proseguono i ricercatori - Ciò rappresenta un importante contributo scientifico al chiarimento della patogenesi di tale malattia, le cui conseguenze cliniche sono particolarmente invalidanti”.
Tra i segni clinici della malattia il più peculiare è la grave immunodeficienza causata da una disfunzione delle cellule B del sistema immunitario, le quali rilasciano un livello ridotto di anticorpi nel sangue. Ne consegue, soprattutto nei bambini, un’elevatissima frequenza nel contrarre infezioni che rappresentano la principale causa di morte in questi pazienti. Le altre caratteristiche cliniche sono anomalie facciali, il ritardo psicomotorio e il ritardo mentale.
“Una tale eterogeneità nei sintomi clinici ha finora reso complesso lo studio e la comprensione dei numerosi meccanismi molecolari difettosi in questa patologia genetica - prosegue il dr. D’Esposito - I geni per funzionare adeguatamente devono trovarsi in una posizione ad hoc. Nella sindrome ICF abbiamo osservato per la prima volta un malposizionamento di alcuni geni all’interno del nucleo della cellula associato ad una deregolazione dell’espressione degli stessi”.
L’individuazione di tale difetto di posizione dei geni nell’ambito dei territori cromosomici di appartenenza rappresenta un contributo essenziale nello studio non solo dell’ICF ma anche di altre malattie genetiche simili. La scoperta offre inoltre un nuovo paradigma interpretativo per studiare i meccanismi molecolari sottostanti a patologie come la sindrome di Rett o il cancro, alla cui base vi sono perturbazioni dei geni o degenerazione cellulare. E, ancora più importante, offre nuovi spunti per lo sviluppo di appropriate strategie terapeutiche volte alla ricerca di farmaci che riportino il gene nella ‘posizione giusta’.
Translation - English Gene misplacement causes serious illnesses
The Institute of Genetics and Biophysics of the National Research Institute in Naples, Italy, (IGB-CNR) has identified the first case of a defect in the position and distance between genes in people affected by ICF, a severe immunodeficiency causing infections, mental retardation, psychomotor impairment and death. However, studying/observing this misplacement might help explain the mechanisms of other genetic diseases and of cancer, thus offering new therapeutic hints, because not only the alteration of a single gene, but also the movement of genes can cause serious illnesses.
This is confirmed by a research carried out by Maurizio D'Esposito and Maria Matarazzo’s team, from the IGB-CNR, with the collaboration of Wendy Bickmore’s team from the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Edinburgh, made possible thanks to fundings from Telethon and the Province of Naples.
"Our genome is a biochemical machine of extraordinary complexity and it works in a three-dimensional space. Apart from the DNA sequence, there is an additional repertoire of information, more versatile and complex, that depends on the interaction between DNA and proteins. These, by wrapping each other, make up the chromosomes in each cell. This code is called 'epigenetic' and acts as a volume-control device, raising or lowering the 'voice' of genes.” Says Dr. Matarazzo.
In this perspective, the team from IGB-CNR has suggested/assumed that the position and mutual distance of genes within chromosomes represent two crucial aspects for their proper functioning.
"This joint work has led to the identification of the first case of a defect in the position and mutual distance of some genes in patients of a human genetic disease, the ICF syndrome”, researchers continue. “This is an important scientific contribution to the clarification of the pathogenesis of this disease, which has particularly disabling clinical consequences".
Among the clinical/medical signs of the disease, the most peculiar is the severe immunodeficiency caused by a dysfunction of the immune system’s B-cells, which release a low level of antibodies in the blood. This results in a very high tendency to contract infections that represent the main cause of death of these patients, who are mainly children. Other clinical characteristics of this disease are facial anomalies, psychomotor impairment and mental retardation.
According to Dr. Esposito, "such a variety of clinical symptoms has complicated so far the study and understanding of the many defective molecular mechanisms of this genetic disorder. In order to work properly, genes must be in a specific position. In the ICF syndrome, we have seen for the first time a misplacement of certain genes within the cell nucleus, associated with a deregulation of the expression of these genes”.
Detecting this misplacement of genes in their chromosome territories gives an essential contribution to the study of ICF and also of other similar genetic diseases. Moreover, this discovery offers a new interpretive paradigm for studying the molecular mechanisms of diseases such as Rett syndrome or cancer, which are caused by gene disruption or cell degeneration. More importantly, it offers new insights for the development of appropriate therapeutic strategies aimed at developing medicines that will bring the gene back to its “right position”.
