Source text - German Was ist eine Schilddrüsen-Sonografie?
Bei einer Schilddrüsen-Sonografie wird die Schilddrüse mittels Ultraschall untersucht. Das Verfahren lässt Rückschlüsse auf die Größe und Form der Schilddrüse, aber auch auf Knoten, Gewebebeschaffenheit und andere Veränderungen zu.
Die Schilddrüse ist ein schmetterlingsförmiges Organ, in dem Hormone gebildet und freigesetzt werden, die für den Stoffwechsel im Körper eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
Wie funktioniert die Schilddrüsen-Sonografie?
Das Funktionsprinzip dieser Untersuchung ist das gleiche wie bei jeder anderen Ultraschalluntersuchung. Ein Schallkopf sendet Schallwellen aus, die durch das Gewebe verändert werden. Die veränderten Wellen werden vom Schallkopf wieder empfangen. Mit Hilfe eines Verstärkers werden sie bearbeitet und auf einem Bildschirm dargestellt.
Wozu dient die Schilddrüsen-Sonografie?
Mit Hilfe der Schilddrüsen-Sonografie lässt sich die Größe der Schilddrüse bestimmen. Zusätzlich können Ärzte verschiedene krankhafte Veränderungen nachweisen, manchmal auch den Krankheitsverlauf kontrollieren. Dazu zählen unter anderem:
Struma (Kropf): Ein Struma ist eine Vergrößerung der gesamten Schilddrüse oder einzelner Teile dieses Organs. Es gibt verschiedene Ursachen für eine derartige Vergrößerung.
Zysten: Eine Zyste ist ein flüssigkeitsgefülltes Bläschen, das eine oder mehrere Kammern hat.
Knoten:Knoten in der Schilddrüse können gutartig (z.B. Adenome) oder bösartig sein (Schilddrüsenkarzinom).
Wie wird die Schilddrüsen-Sonografie durchgeführt?
Der Patient liegt während der Untersuchung auf dem Rücken. Durch ein kleines Kissen unter den Schultern wird sein Kopf etwas nach hinten geneigt. Auf die Haut des Halses bzw. auf den Ultraschallkopf wird ein Gel aufgebracht. Der Grund: Zwischen Schallkopf und Haut darf sich keine Luft befinden, welche die Ultraschallwellen vollständig reflektieren würde. Dann ließe sich kein Ultraschallbild erzeugen.
Durch das Bewegen und unterschiedliche Abwinkeln des Schallkopfes auf der Haut kann der Arzt die Schilddrüse aus verschiedenen Richtungen betrachten und die beiden Schilddrüsenlappen ausmessen. Nach Abschluss der Untersuchung wird das Gel abgewischt.
Mögliche Komplikationen
Die Ultraschall-Untersuchung der Schilddrüse ist ungefährlich und nicht mit Komplikationen oder Nebenwirkungen verbunden.

Thyroid sonography is an examination of the thyroid by means of ultrasound. Based on this examination, conclusions can be drawn regarding the size and shape of the thyroid gland, but also about lumps, tissue characteristics and other changes.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ that produces and releases hormones that play an important role in the the body's metabolism.
How does thyroid sonography work?
The functional principle behind this examination is the same as in any other ultrasound examination. A transducer emits sound waves that are modified by the tissue. The altered waves are recorded by the transducer. With the help of an amplifier, they are processed and displayed on a screen.
What is the purpose of thyroid sonography?
With thyroid sonography the size of the thyroid gland can be determined. In addition, physicians can detect various pathological changes and sometimes also control the progress of a disease. Examples include:
Goitre: A goiter is an enlargement of the entire thyroid or individual parts of this organ. There are various causes for such an enlargement.
Cysts: A cyst is a fluid-filled vesicle with one or more chambers.
Lumps: Lumps in the thyroid gland can be benign (e.g. adenomas) or malignant (thyroid carcinoma).
How is thyroid sonography performed?
The patient is supine during the investigation. The head is tilted backwards slightly with a small pillow under the shoulders. A gel is applied to the skin of the neck or to the ultrasound probe. The rational behind this: if there was any air trapped between the transducer and the skin, the ultrasonic waves would be fully reflected. That would prevent the formation of an ultrasound image.
By moving and tilting the transducer over the skin, the physician can look at the thyroid from different perspectives and measure the two thyroid lobes. After the examination is completed, the gel is wiped off.
Possible Complications
The examination of the thyroid gland by ultrasound is safe and not associated with complications or side effects.
