Bio
Education

I studied Russian and German at Cambridge University and loved Russian studies so much that I chose to major in Russian. I spent my third year in Moscow studying language and literature and travelling the Trans-Siberian Railway. My degree course subjects covered: German literature and language, Russian-English and English-Russian translation, Church Slavonic, history papers in Kievan Rus’ 800-1300 and medieval history 1300-1600 as well as papers on Russian nineteenth and twentieth century literature.

“Translation takes place at the verges of our cultural experience. It is here at the edges of cultural certainty that we travel in search of new experience and solutions essential to the things that matter to us most: our businesses, our creative endeavours, conservancy, and our own life journeys. Translators open windows onto vital new worlds, transforming mystery into knowledge, validating voices, enlivening hope, …” Joanna Dobson

Russia Resident Interpreting

I was resident in Russia for over ten years living and working as an English tutor and editor in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk and the Altai Republic, south Siberia. In Altai I immersed myself in studies of Siberian geography, flora and fauna, archaeology and indigenous cultures, over time becoming in a sense tri-cultural. It was in Altai, Siberia that my translator apprenticeship began.

Expert in Altai Republic, Siberia

In the Altai region I interpreted for a wide variety of groups: local protected areas, indigenous NGOs, western conservation organisations, Altai indigenous leaders and tourists/pilgrims. I was interpreting in conference rooms and offices but also in remote landscapes, sometimes on foot, sometimes on horseback, in the mountains, in hospitals, in yurts and around campfires. In the field, especially interpreting at sacred sites, communication is exciting, complex and intense. Here I had the opportunity to draw on all the three skills components essential to effective cross-cultural communication: relationship-building, cultural immersion and research. I was helping transform the obstacles of cultural diversity into opportunity, laying the foundations for future collaboration, creative thinking, innovation and inner transformation. This was by far the most humbling and exciting translation work I have ever done: I knew, the process would help shape the future of a nation.
