Source text - English An example dual-spool turbofan engine is depicted in Fig. 1. Turbofan engine 10 comprises several sections: fan section 12, first low-pressure compressor section 14, second high-pressure compressor section 16, combustor section 18, first high-pressure turbine section 20, second low-pressure turbine section 22, bypass section 24, low-pressure shaft 26, and high-pressure shaft 28. A portion of the atmospheric air pulled in by rotation of fan section 12 is directed toward first compressor section 14, while the remainder is directed toward bypass section 24.
Air directed through first compressor section 14 is further compressed by second compressor section 16. Fuel is added and ignited in combustor section 18. Blades in turbine sections 20 and 22 capture a portion of the energy from passing combustion products by turning turbine rotors. Both fan section 12 and first compressor section 14 are rotatably linked via low-pressure shaft 26 to first low-pressure power turbine section 22. Second high-pressure compressor section 16 is rotatably connected to first high-pressure turbine section 22 via high-pressure shaft 28. Thrust is generated in engine 10 by the force of the air drawn in by fan section 12 and pushed through bypass section 24 (less any bleed air used for other aircraft functions), and by the force of exhaust gases exiting from second low-pressure turbine section 22.
In a turbofan engine, lighter components generally lead to more efficient performance. If less energy is expended to move internal engine parts, more energy is available for useful work. At the same time, the components themselves must be strong enough to withstand operational forces, and types of failure typical for the operating environment of the engine. Safety considerations and regulations based on the frequency and/or severity of possible failure will often dictate that the engine components also be able to withstand other atypical, yet foreseeable events. Because stronger and lighter components are often more expensive, a balance must be struck between efficiency, safety, and cost.
Few locations in an aircraft are more representative of efforts to optimize the balance between efficiency, safety, and cost than engine 10. While lighter materials are preferable to improve efficiency, the high risk of severe consequences from engine damage will require that engine 10 be made of components having additional margins of safety. Combining parts having both high strength and low density greatly restricts material choices and increases costs. Not infrequently, processing these strong and light materials such as titanium or composites is also complex and expensive.

Source text - English Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs)
PMCs have been used in the gas turbine since the early 1960s. In fact, glass reinforced epoxy constituted 40 per cent by volume of the RB162, a 1960s lift engine, including the compressor stators and rotor blades. Interest in carbon fibre composites was stimulated by their successful application for fan blades on some Rolls-Royce Conway engines for VC10 airliners.
Further expansion of these materials into the core of the engine and components critical to its successful operation will require a greater maturity from both the materials and the associated design methodologies. The higher temperatures will demand the development of a high temperature matrix system capable of being economically moulded into complex geometries. Fire and damage tolerance are also barriers to be overcome, yet the rewards of replacing heavier expensive metal fabrications are large.
Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs)
MMCs extend the potential temperature range for the application of composite materials. Currently the most promising MMC system for gas turbine application is the titanium MMC (TiMMC). The high performance of the continuous, silicon carbide fibres means that when they are embedded in a Ti-6Al-4V matrix, the overall system can yield a 50 per cent increase in strength, a two-fold improvement in stiffness and a reduction in density compared with the parent material.
TiMMCs offer an alternative to conventional titanium alloys in the compressor section of the engine. The application which is seen to yield the greatest benefit is a natural development beyond the titanium blisk to the integrally bladed ring or bling. Here the bore of the disc can be eliminated, as the hoop stress can be born by the fibre reinforced rim alone, resulting in significant weight savings of up to 70 per cent over a conventional disc and blade arrangement and 40 per cent over a conventional titanium blisk design.
The first TiMMC bling application will be in a military vehicle where weight is critical. However, costs remain an issue and there are a number of projects underway to look at reducing fibre and manufacturing costs.
Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs)
CMCs offer potentially significant temperature advantages over metals, together with a density typically one third that of nickel. They exhibit very high levels of specific stiffness compared to the competitor superalloys, but this must be weighed against a lack of ductility and the consequently low defect tolerance. Whilst a CMC does retain its specific strength to higher temperatures than metals, in absolute terms the useable strength is low. Due to these mechanical limitations, CMCs have to-date only been considered for niche applications as high temperature components at low structural loads, where their temperature capability can be exploited in order to avoid the need for cooling of metal components. This can yield a cost benefit for the overall engine even when the use of the CMC is not justified on a component for component basis.

Source text - English Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials
This test method determines the in-plane tensile properties of polymer matrix composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The composite material forms are limited to continuous fiber or discontinuous fiber-reinforced composites in which the laminate is balanced and symmetric with respect to the test direction.
The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the inch-pound units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Many filamentary composite materials show essentially bilinear behavior during force application, such as seen in plots of either longitudinal stress versus longitudinal strain or transverse strain versus long longitudinal strain. There are varying physical reasons for the existence of a transition region. Common examples include: matrix cracking under tensile force application and ply delamination.
A thin flat strip of material having a constant rectangular cross section is mounted in the grips of a mechanical testing machine and monotonically loaded in tension while recording the force. The ultimate strength of the material can be determined from the maximum force carried before failure. If the coupon strain is monitored with strain or displacement transducers then the stress-strain response of the material can be determined, from which the ultimate tensile strain, tensile modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, and transition strain can be derived.
This test method is designed to produce tensile property data for material specifications, research and development, quality assurance, and structural design and analysis. Factors that influence the tensile response and should therefore be reported include the following: material, methods of material preparation and lay-up, specimen stacking sequence, specimen preparation, specimen conditioning, environment of testing, specimen alignment and gripping, speed of testing, time at temperature, void content, and volume percent reinforcement. Properties, in the test direction, which may be obtained from this test method include the following:

Source text - English Process Description
Investment casting is an industrial process which is closely controlled at every point of production. Every casting shipped—and this applies equally to orders for a dozen castings or half a million—can be relied upon to meet the designer's performance specification.
Pattern Production
The process begins with production of a one-piece heat-disposable pattern. This pattern is usually made by injecting wax or plastic into a metal die. These dies may range from a simple, hand-operated single cavity tool to a fully automated multi-cavity tool, depending on production quantities and complexity of the part.
A heat-disposable pattern is required for each casting. These disposable patterns have the exact geometry of the required finished part with allowances made to compensate for volumetric shrinkage (a) in the pattern production stage and (b) during solidification of metal in the ceramic mold.
The pattern carries one or more gates which are usually located at the heaviest casting section. The gate has three functions:
• to attach patterns to the spruce or runner, forming a cluster;
• to provide a passage for draining out pattern material as it melts upon heating;
• to guide molten metal entering the mold cavity in the casting operation; and to ensure a sound part by feeding the casting during solidification.
Pattern Assembly
Patterns are fastened by the gate to one or more runners and the runners are attached to a pouring cup. Patterns, runners and pouring cup comprise the cluster or tree, which is needed to produce the ceramic mold. The number of runners per section and their arrangement on the pouring cup can vary considerably, depending on alloy type, size and configuration of the casting.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the sequence of pattern production and assembly. Figure 1 represents the injection of wax or plastic into the pattern die. Figure 2 represents the removal of the solidified pattern from the die; it is now ready to be assembled onto a cluster or tree Figure 3.
The Ceramic Shell Mold Process
This process has largely replaced the original block or solid mold process except for some smaller high volume parts and for some aluminum casting where the mold is plaster bonded.
The ceramic shell mold technique involves dipping the entire cluster into a ceramic slurry, draining it, then coating it with fine ceramic sand. After drying, this process is repeated again and again, using progressively coarser grades of ceramic material, until a self-supporting shell has been formed. The shell may be from 3/16 to 5/8 in. thick. - Figures 4, 5 and 6.
The coated cluster is then placed in a high temperature furnace or steam autoclave where the pattern melts and runs out through the gates, runners and pouring cup. This leaves a ceramic shell containing cavities of the casting shape desired together with a suitable running and feeding system, Figure 7.
Casting
The ceramic shell molds are fired to burn out the last traces of pattern material, to develop the high temperature bond of the ceramic system and to preheat the mold in preparation for casting. Because shell molds have relatively thin walls, they can be fired and be ready to pour after only a few hours in the furnace, Figure 8.
The hot molds may be poured utilizing static pressure of the molten metal heat, as is common in sand casting, or with assistance of vacuum, pressure and/or centrifugal force. This enables the investment casting foundry to reproduce the most intricate details and extremely thin walls of an original wax or plastic pattern, Figure 9.
Melting equipment employed depends on the alloy. For nonferrous alloys, gas fired or electric crucible furnaces are usually used. High-frequency induction furnaces are most commonly used for melting ferrous alloys.
Cleaning
After the poured molds have cooled, the mold material is removed from the casting cluster. This is done by mechanical vibration and chemical cleaning. Individual castings are then removed from the cluster by means of cut-off wheels and any remaining protrusions left by gates or runners are removed by belt grinding. The casting is then ready for secondary operations such as heat treating, straightening, machining and for whatever inspection is specified.

Сборка модели
Модели крепятся с помощью питателя к одному или нескольким коллекторам, а коллекторы крепятся к литниковой чаше. Модели, коллекторы и литниковая чаша составляют модельный блок или «ёлку», которые необходимы для изготовления керамической формы. Количество коллекторов на секцию и их расположение на литниковой чаше может быть разным в зависимости от типа сплава, размера и формы отливки.

Процесс формования керамической оболочки
Этот процесс в значительной степени заменил первоначальный процесс с использованием блоков или неразъемных форм за исключением более мелких крупносерийных деталей и некоторых отливок из алюминия, где форма скрепляется с помощью гипса.
Способ формования керамической оболочки предусматривает погружение всего модельного блока в шликер, его сушку и покрытие мелкозернистым керамическим песком. Применяемое плавильное оборудование зависит от сплава. Как правило, для цветных сплавов используются газовые или электрические тигельные печи. Высокочастотные индукционные печи обычно используются для плавления чёрных сплавов.
Очистка
После охлаждения залитых форм материал формы удаляется из блока отливок. Это достигается путём механической вибрации и химической очистки. Затем каждая отливка отделяется от блока отливок с помощью отрезного круга, а все оставшиеся выступы питателей или коллекторов удаляются ленточным шлифованием. После этого отливка готова для проведения второстепенных операций, таких как термообработка, правка, механическая обработка, и назначенного приёмочного контроля какого-либо типа.
