Questo progetto nasce da una piccola invidia. Quando abbiamo scoperto che un gruppo di urbanisti del Politecnico di Milano – degli urbanisti! – si era trasferito armi e bagagli a San Siro per studiare l’emergenza abitativa intervistando gli abitanti del quartiere, ci siamo incuriositi e anche sentiti un po’ in difetto. Di solito gli architetti progettano, usano il CAD, tirano righe, invece il team di Mapping raccoglieva storie, scavava in profondità, usava l’intero armamentario del bravo reporter. Così ci siamo detti che sarebbe stato interessante lavorare al fianco di questi urbanisti da marciapiede, insieme avremmo potuto raccontare cosa accade in uno dei quartieri più caldi di Milano, verificando se oltre i titoloni dei giornali, sotto la superficie, ci fosse dell’altro. Per darsi un metodo comune di lavoro sono stati sufficienti pochi incontri. L’idea era quella di raccontare una realtà complessa e stratificata, spesso dipinta attraverso luoghi comuni fin troppo comodi (il migrante occupante, l’italiano razzista, il vuoto della politica, il deserto delle associazioni e della scuola) con il passo dello slow reporting: un modo diverso di fare cronaca, attento all’eccezionalità del quotidiano. In questo percorso Mapping è stato un alleato decisivo. I ricercatori del Politecnico hanno condiviso con la Scuola di giornalismo dell’Università Cattolica ogni informazione raccolta. Del resto, senza di loro sansirostories.it non sarebbe mai esistito: gli urbanisti da marciapiede, molto più strutturati di noi, in sei mesi di presenza a San Siro avevano accumulato un “vantaggio competitivo” incolmabile e un insight giornalistico raro. Il quadro che emerge al termine di questa ricognizione è problematico. C’è un dato di realtà che va oltre la cronaca. E’ una complessità a tratti fastidiosa, che in alcune situazioni ci vede impreparati come cittadini, mette alla prova la nostra capacità di convivenza. Ma è una complessità che vale la pena vivere, sorprendente per i risultati che a volte produce. Come ci posizioniamo di fronte a una scuola di italiano per stranieri che conta un giro di sessanta volontari? A un servizio gratuito di assistenza per ogni tipo di emergenza abitativa? Oppure, ancora, ai giovani professionisti che lasciano il centro per venire a vivere in questa periferia? A un gruppo di genitori e insegnanti che, d’accordo col preside, organizza ogni sorta di attività per favorire l’integrazione? sansirostories.it è il racconto corale di un quartiere considerato difficile ma imbevuto fino al midollo di quella ricchezza culturale e sociale che solo i luoghi meticci presentano. Un reportage iper-locale che si sforza di costruire una narrazione di ampio respiro: voci, volti, storie, luoghi, abitudini, culture e religioni. Il sottotitolo – The White Album – non è casuale. Si intitola così un saggio del 1979 di Joan Didion, in cui sono raccolti alcuni saggi fondativi del New journalism. Approccio lento, rivalutazione del punto di vista soggettivo al limite dell’autobiografismo, amore per i dettagli, cura della forma e del linguaggio. Esattamente quello che ci piace. Buona visione.
II. IL MODELLO BONDY BLOG
Nel 2005, a Clichy-sous-Bois, periferia di Parigi, due adolescenti di origine africana muoiono fulminati da un trasformatore all’interno di una cabina elettrica. Le versioni della polizia e quella di alcuni testimoni non coincidono. L’episodio è l’ultimo di una serie di tensioni latenti nel quartiere e scatena violente rivolte nelle banlieues contro polizia e governo. Per tre settimane, le manifestazioni di protesta si estendono ad altre città della Francia, provocando devastazioni e saccheggi. Gli arresti sono 2.600, le auto bruciate più di 8.000. Nella banlieue di Bondy, Serge Michel, giornalista del magazine svizzero l’Hebdo, ha l’idea di fondare un osservatorio permanente online per raccontare dall’interno la realtà di queste aree, ignorate dai media nazionali fino allo scoppio delle proteste. Per tre mesi una quindicina di cronisti de l’Hebdo si installano in un piccolo locale – lo spogliatoio della squadra di calcio locale – e da qui iniziano a descrivere in un blog quello che vedono. I reporter non scrivono classici servizi di cronaca, ma lunghi articoli narrativi, cercano storie, postano fotografie e video. Mentre gli altri media – passata l’emergenza degli scontri – si ritirano, i giornalisti de l’Hebdo restano sul campo e scavano in profondità. Grazie a questa esperienza gli abitanti della periferia a nord di Parigi ritrovano una voce e possono raccontare la propria realtà quotidiana, fornendo un punto di vista interno e alternativo a quello dei media nazionali. Nasce così Bondy Blog, un esperimento di scrittura partecipata che diventerà materia di studio per una generazione di giornalisti e storyteller. Oggi Bondy Blog è ospitato dal quotidiano Liberation. A marzo 2006 il blog è consegnato a un team locale, diretto da Mohamed Hamidi, che fa crescere il pubblico e firma un accordo con il portale di news Yahoo! France in vista della copertura delle elezioni legislative del 2007. Nel 2010 Bondy Blog raggiunge 400 mila utenti unici al mese.
III. IL GRUPPO DI RICERCA MAPPING SAN SIRO
Mapping San Siro è un gruppo di ricerca azione del Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani (DASTU) Politecnico di Milano, che dal 2013 è attivo nel quartiere di edilizia pubblica San Siro a Milano. Questa esperienza, supportata dal programma
Polisocial, ha una natura sperimentale nel panorama dell’università italiana, collocandosi all’incrocio tra didattica e investigazione, tra ricerca e azione. Mapping si avvicina al quartiere San Siro attraverso il coinvolgimento diretto del
contesto locale. Le attività sono sviluppate in stretta collaborazione con cooperative, associazioni, gruppi di cittadini e abitanti, sperimentando un modo nuovo di fare ricerca, fondato su pratiche di dialogo e ascolto, e sulla interazione tra le conoscenze.
IV. LA SCUOLA DI GIORNALISMO DELL’UNIVERSITA’ CATTOLICA
L’attenzione per il sociale, l’inchiesta, il desiderio di approfondire e la ricerca di punti di vista inediti sono, da sempre, i binari su cui si muove la Scuola di Giornalismo dell’Università Cattolica. In questi anni abbiamo realizzato decine di reportage che raccontano la trasformazione di Milano, la città dove viviamo: integrazione, disagio abitativo, gang metropolitane, innovazione, migranti, povertà, mafia, carcere, prostituzione sono solo alcuni dei temi trattati.Il video è il nostro
linguaggio: unito alle parole, arriva dove i quotidiani spesso falliscono, dritto al cuore della gente. Altra cosa, ci piace sperimentare: è una licenza che una scuola di giornalismo può prendersi, e l’università è il posto giusto per farlo. In questo senso, il quartiere di San Siro non è stato solo un oggetto di indagine, ma una palestra dove 20 giovani giornalisti si sono fatti le ossa confrontandosi con una realtà di strada difficile, chiusa, anche violenta. Per raccontarla è servita
infinita pazienza e uno sforzo di sensibilità non scontato. Il web e i tool open source sono una parte fondamentale della nostra didattica. sansirostories.it raccoglie le esperienze che abbiamo fatto in questi anni producendo progetti crossmediali, come questo. V. IL QUARTIERE IN CIFRE
Nel corso del 2014, l’emergenza casa ha portato San Siro sulle prime pagine della cronaca nazionale. Nel quartiere, che la stampa ha spesso paragonato alle banlieues francesi, le tensioni sociali sono sfociate in violenti episodi di protesta contro le azioni di sgombero e il racket che controlla parte delle case popolari gestite dell’Azienda Lombarda Edilizia Residenziale (Aler). Costruito fra il 1935 e il 1947 secondo canoni abitativi innovativi, San Siro si è successivamente sviluppato in modo disomogeneo, diventando un insediamento afflitto da un profondo degrado sia fisico che sociale. La mancanza di spazi pubblici, un progressivo abbandono degli spazi per servizi e commercio, una gestione disattenta del patrimonio abitativo, hanno contribuito alla cattiva fama di un quartiere dove i successivi interventi di riqualificazione sono proceduti in modo frammentario e a macchia di leopardo. Degli alloggi ancora pubblici (il 23% dei quali è stato nel frattempo venduto) non tutti sono utilizzati: a fine 2012 erano 780 gli appartamenti sfitti nel quartiere, a causa di regolamenti, procedure o mancanza di investimenti che ne impediscono la rapida riattivazione (cambio di assegnazione, inagibilità degli alloggi, canoni di locazione ecc.) a fronte di una lista d’attesa di 21 mila domande in graduatoria. Disomogenea è anche la provenienza degli 11 mila abitanti di San Siro: il 40% sono stranieri, una percentuale alta rispetto al 13,2% della media milanese, e arriva principalmente dal Nord Africa (Egitto, Marocco), ma anche da Yemen, Perù e Filippine. Nel quartiere convivono modalità diverse di proprietà e percorsi di accesso alla casa, come profili di abitanti tra di loro differenti per cultura, tradizioni, livelli di reddito, paesi di origine. Una convivenza che richiede agli abitanti grandi capacità nel “mestiere dell’abitare tra diversi”. E’ un quartiere con problemi gravi ma anche ricco di iniziative, associazioni, comitati, di energie.

Translation - English THE SAN SIRO STORIES PROJECT
This project came about as a result of a little envy. When we discovered that a group of town planners from the Polytechnic University of Milan (yes, town planners!) had set up camp in San Siro to study the housing crisis of the neighbourhood by interviewing residents, we were curious, but also felt a little at fault. Architects are supposed to design, use AutoCAD and sketch lines, but here the Mapping team was collecting stories, delving into the subject matter and using all the tools of any good reporter. So we said to ourselves, how interesting it would be to work side by side with these town planners in the field, on the pavement itself. Together we would be able to tell the real story behind one of Milan's most troubled neighbourhoods, going beyond the headlines and below the surface in search of something more. Only a few meetings were needed for us to establish a common work method. The idea was to tell the story of a complex, layered situation, often portrayed through all-too-comfortable clichés (the squatting migrant, the racist Italian, the political void, abandoned associations and schools) with the pace of 'slow reporting': a different way of covering a story, paying close attention to the exceptional nature of everyday life. The Mapping team has been a crucial ally throughout this endeavour. Researchers from the Polytechnic shared every piece of information they had gathered with the School of Journalism from the Università Cattolica. Moreover, without them, sansirostories.it would never have existed: through their field work, these town planners, who were much more structured than us, had gained an unassailable advantage over the course of their six months in San Siro, as well as a rare journalistic insight. At the end of this explorative study, however, the picture that has emerged is somewhat problematic. There is one fact of reality that takes us far beyond these stories. It is a complexity which is, at times, unpleasant and for which we, as citizens, are sometimes ill-prepared. It puts our ability to cohabit to the test, yet this complexity is still worth experiencing as it often produces surprising results. What is our stance regarding an Italian school for foreigners that relies on a group of sixty volunteers? Or a free aid service to help people in all kinds of housing crises? And what about the young professionals who leave the city centre to come and live in this suburb? Or the group of parents and teachers that, in agreement with the headmaster, organises all kinds of activities to encourage integration? Sansirostories.it is the unanimous tale of a neighbourhood that is troubled, yet steeped to the very core in a cultural and social diversity that only emerges in places of mixed-race inhabitants. This hyperlocal reportage strives to build an extensive, far-reaching narration of voices, faces, stories, places, customs, cultures and religions. It is no coincidence that the subheading for this reportage is The White Album. This was the title of a book of essays published in 1979 and written by Joan Didion which compiles a collection of pioneering works in the field of New Journalism: a slow approach to reporting with a new-found appreciation for the subjective perspective verging on autobiographism; a love for detail and an emphasis on style and language; just what we hope to have achieved here. II. THE BONDY BLOG MODEL
In 2005 in the Parisian suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, two teenagers of African origin were electrocuted and perished inside an electrical substation. The police's version of events, however, did not match with what witnesses described seeing. This incident was the latest in a series of underlying tensions in the neighbourhood and triggered violent revolts in the banlieues against police forces and the government. Protests extended to other cities across France and lasted three weeks, escalating into raids and pillages: 2,600 people were arrested and over 8,000 cars were burned. In the banlieu of Bondy, Serge Michel, journalist for the Swiss magazine l’Hebdo, had the idea of creating a permanent online observatory as a way of reporting the reality of these areas from the inside; areas which had otherwise been ignored by the national press up until the outbreak of the protests. For three months, around 15 journalists from l’Hebdo gathered together in a small space (the changing rooms of the local football club) and began to publish their observations in a blog. Rather than writing standard news items, these reporters penned long, narrative articles in search of real stories and posted photographs and videos too. Once the immediate conflict had died down, whilst other media retreated, the journalists from l’Hebdo remained in the field and investigated further. Thanks to this experience, residents of this northern Parisian suburb found their voice and could recount the reality of their everyday life, providing an internal, alternative point of view to that of the national press. Thus, the Bondy Blog was born: a participative writing experiment that became a case study for a whole new generation of journalists and storytellers. Today, Bondy Blog works in collaboration with the daily newspaper Liberation. In March 2006, the blog was assigned to a local team led by Mohamed Hamidi, who increased the number of readers and signed an agreement with the online news portal Yahoo! France to cover the 2007 legislative elections. By 2010, Bondy Blog had reached 400,000 users every month.
III. THE SAN SIRO MAPPING RESEARCH GROUP
Mapping San Siro is an action research group from the Department of Architectural and Urban Studies (DASTU) of the Polytechnic University of Milan. The group has been active in the San Siro neighbourhood of public housing since 2013. Supported by the
Polisocial programme, this project, within the context of Italian universities, is experimental in nature, positioning itself at the crossroads between academia and investigation, research and action. Mapping approached the San Siro neighbourhood as a result of their direct involvement in the local context. Activities were developed in close collaboration with societies, associations, groups of city-dwellers and residents, and experimented with a new way of carrying out research based on the practices of dialogue, listening and knowledge sharing.
IV. THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM OF THE UNIVERSITA’ CATTOLICA
A focus on society, the investigative process, the desire to expand knowledge and the pursuit of unedited opinions are the driving forces behind the School of Journalism of the Università Cattolica. In recent years we have produced dozens of reports that describe the transformation of Milan, the city where we are based: integration, housing deprivation, subway gangs, innovations, migrants, poverty, mafia, prisons and prostitution are just some of the topics explored. We communicate through video, which, when paired with words, can go where newspapers often fall short: straight to people's hearts. We also like to experiment. This is something that a school of journalism is entitled to and university is the right place to do it. In this sense, the San Siro neighbourhood has not only been an object of study, but also a training ground for 20 young journalists to learn the ropes when faced with a tough, closed-minded and sometimes even violent street life. To tell these stories required an infinite patience and a sensitive manner not to be taken for granted. The Internet and open web source tools have formed a fundamental part of our education. Sansirostories.it is the fruit of our own experiences acquired in recent years whilst creating multi-platform storytelling projects like this one. V. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN FIGURES
Over the course of 2014, San Siro made headlines in the national news as a result of the housing crisis. Often likened to the French banlieues by the press, social tensions in the neighbourhood culminated in violent acts of protest against evictions and the racket that controls part of the council houses managed by the Residential Housing Company of Lombardy (Aler). Built between 1935 and 1947, following innovative housing models, San Siro later developed in an inhomogeneous fashion, becoming a settlement afflicted with a deep-seated degradation, on both a physical and social level. The lack of public spaces, the gradual abandonment of service and business spaces and the negligent management of housing assets have all contributed to the neighbourhood's bad reputation, whilst subsequent requalification interventions have been sporadic and piecemeal. Of all the dwellings that are still classed as public (23% of which, as of yet, have been sold), not all of them are used. At the end of 2012, there were 780 vacant apartments in the neighbourhood owing to regulations, procedures or a lack of funds preventing a quick turnaround (change in budget allowances, buildings unfit for use, rental payments, etc.) up against a waiting list of 21,000 housing applications. The origins of San Siro's 11,000 inhabitants are also somewhat diverse: 40% are foreigners (a high percentage with respect to the 13.2% average in Milan) and most hail from North Africa (Egypt, Morocco) but also Yemen, Peru and the Philippines. In this neighbourhood different types of property ownership exist and there are various ways of getting access to housing, in much the same way that each resident's profile differs in terms of culture, traditions, income bracket and country of origin. This cohabitation requires residents to be highly skilled in their 'ability to live amongst misfits'. Despite being riddled with serious issues, the neighbourhood is buzzing with initiatives, associations and committees, not to mention determination.
