Магазины Юлии Тимошенко – так в середине 2000‑х называли сеть «АТБ‑маркет», стремительно расширявшуюся на востоке и в центре Украины. Слухи вокруг днепропетровской компании, которая открывала в год по 50 магазинов, рассчитанных на экономного покупателя, плодились неспроста: ее владельцев не знали в лицо даже партнеры. Когда в 2006 году «АТБ» сдавала в аренду литовской сети «Буми‑маркет» два своих магазина в Житомире, условия согласовывались по телефону, а договорами обменивались по почте. «Обычно такие вопросы решались в ходе прямых переговоров с собственниками, – вспоминает бывший директор по развитию «Буми‑маркета» Александр Ланецкий. – А тут никаких встреч: ключи от магазинов передал завхоз».
Единственная ниточка, связывающая «АТБ‑маркет» с Тимошенко, – одно из прошлых мест работы основателя сети, 54‑летнего Геннадия Буткевича. В середине 1990‑х он возглавлял службу безопасности ЕЭСУ, после чего их пути с Тимошенко разошлись. Но отрицать связь с «оранжевой принцессой» компания стала только в 2007 году. Какой смысл разрушать легенду, которая помогает развивать бизнес?
Сегодня «АТБ‑маркет» – крупнейшая в Украине по количеству точек продовольственная сеть. По выручке (15,1 млрд гривен в 2011‑м) она уступает лишь Fozzy Group. Всего десять лет назад это был средней руки ритейлер, который только‑только нащупывал свою формулу успеха.
При советской власти днепропетровец Буткевич делал карьеру в милиции. По словам одного из его знакомых, до перехода в бизнес он работал в управлении по борьбе с организованной преступностью.
В 1993‑м Буткевич организовал компанию «Агротехбизнес», которая торговала чем придется – от бензина до продуктов питания. В какой‑то момент под ее контроль перешло шесть гастрономов в Днепропетровске. Наличие собственного бизнеса не мешало Буткевичу отвечать с 1995 по 1997 год за службу безопасности газового монополиста – ЕЭСУ. Тимошенко знала, что у Буткевича есть компания на стороне, но ничего против не имела, говорит бывший топ‑менеджер ЕЭСУ.
По мере расширения бизнеса Буткевич обрастал младшими партнерами. Ключевыми среди них были совладелец днепропетровского мясокомбината Евгений Ермаков, строитель Сергей Тарасюк и экономист из Узбекистана Виктор Карачун. К концу 1990‑х они построили целый холдинг, в который входили три десятка магазинов, два мясокомбината, кондитерская фабрика, хлебозавод и завод минеральных вод.
Никто из четырех партнеров не согласился дать интервью для этой статьи. Все, чего удалось добиться в результате многомесячных переговоров, – это интервью председателя совета директоров и фотографии собственников, которые публикуются впервые.
Эпоха бартера и сверхприбылей на оптовой торговле заканчивалась. Исчерпала себя и советская модель розничной торговли. Shops of Yulia Tymoshenko – this is how in the mid-2000s they called the network "ATB-Market" that was rapidly expanding in eastern and central Ukraine. No wonder rumors were propagating around Dnepropetrovsk company opening 50 stores a year which were aimed at economical buyer: even partners didn’t know its owners in person. When in 2006 "ATB" rented out two of its stores in Zhytomyr to Lithuanian network "Bumi-Market", the conditions were coordinated by phone and agreements were exchanged by mail. "Usually those issues were resolved in direct negotiations with the owners - recalls the former director of development in "Bumi-market" Alexander Lanetsky. - And there were no meetings: the keys to the shops were given by supply manager (zavhoz)".
The only connection of "ATB-Market" with Timoshenko – is one of the last places of work of the network founder, 54-year-old Gennady Butkevich. In the mid-1990s he was the head of UESU (United Energy Systems of Ukraine, *Ukrainian: Єдині енергетичні системи України, ЄЕСУ) security service, and afterwards their paths with Timoshenko diverged. But it was only in 2007 when the company started to deny the relation to the "orange princess". What’s the point to destroy a legend which helps to develop the business?
Today "ATB-Market" is the largest retail food store chain in Ukraine by the number of shops. By revenue (15.1 billion hryvnia in 2011) it is second only to Fozzy Group. Only ten years ago it was a midsized retailer, which was only just groping for its winning formula.
Under the Soviet regime the citizen of Dnepropetrovsk Butkevich was building a career in police. According to one of his acquaintances he was working in the department for fighting organized crime before switching to business.
In 1993 Butkevich has organized a company "Agrotehbiznes" which traded whatever was possible to - from gasoline to food. At some point six grocery stores in Dnepropetrovsk appeared to be under its control. Having his own business was no barrier to Butkevich to be responsible for the security service of the UESU gas monopoly from 1995 to 1997. Timoshenko knew that Butkevich had company on the side, but didn’t mind it, says a former UESU top manager.
As the business was expending - Butkevich was acquiring junior partners. Among them the key partners included the co-owner of Dnepropetrovsk meat processing plant Evgeny Ermakov, builder Sergei Tarasyuk and economist from Uzbekistan Victor Karachun. By the end of 1990s they’ve built an entire holding company which consisted of three dozen stores, two meat processing plants, confectionery plant, bread baking plant and mineral water plant.
None of the four partners agreed to be interviewed for this article. All that has been achieved as a result of months of negotiations – is the interview of chairman of the board of directors and pictures of owners which are published for the first time.
The era of barter and excess profits in the wholesale trade was reaching its end. The Soviet model of retailing has also run its course. A huge supermarket "Solnechniy" - the first store of Rainford network created by Alexander Martynov and Boris Tseytelman was successfully working in Dnepropetrovsk since 1995. And a native of Dnepropetrovsk - Vladimir Kostelman opened the first Kiev hypermarket Fozzy in 1998.

A Growing Need
Change in retail markets comes slowly and almost silently, so it is not always easy to gauge its impact. For example, on the demand side, the mass movement of women into the workforce has been responsible for a drop in store visits of as much as 35 percent in some countries and—with many of these women now shopping weekly instead of daily—a parallel 20 percent increase in the average ticket amount. But because this shift has taken place over a 25-year period, it has gone mostly unnoticed. on the supply side, regulatory barriers, real estate constraints, and economies of scale in purchasing and warehousing have given incumbents a strong advantage but also a false sense of security. As a result, companies have missed opportunities to make the progressive adjustments necessary to retain customers in an evolving market.
Yet a small group of retailers have managed to steadily and forcefully improve their performance over time, gaining market share from competitors and delivering above-average financial results, despite constantly shifting economic conditions, regulations, and consumer demographics. in the past five years, retailers like esselunga in italy and Mercadona in spain have consistently created two to four times more value for their shareholders than their competitors while continuing to gain market share—even in a recessionary environment.
What these champions have in common is an ability to adapt purposefully and continuously to change in their markets and competitive environments. their fine-tuned radar can pick up early signs of shopping- pattern shifts, while their competitors continue to see the same market, day in and day out. as a result, they are always first to market with innovative value propositions. their outstanding success has resulted in a widening gap between them and their competitors.
in this paper, we discuss how other retailers can emulate these winners in adapting their business models to today’s complex and dynamic environment, and so renew their competitive advantage and reignite growth.
