FIRST HALF
Part One
A room with a substantial wooden table in it. A man in a woodworker's apron arrives. This is David, a perfectionist, in Lichfield, 1898. He rubs the table with a final layer of wax, ensuring every inch is entirely smooth. Gideon (61) arrives, London 2013. They are unaware of one another, yet mirror each other. Gideon slides underneath the table, lies down, looking up.
Gideon Want to see a coffin scratch?
(David touches the table. He is shadowed by Gideon from beneath)
No, nobody knows how that one happened. Leopard claws. True.
(As Gideon has his one-sided conversation, David unwittingly inspects the patches Gideon names)
Mad nun’s nails. Bleach, or possibly urine. Heart-burn. That’s a thump and that’s a joke gone wrong. Bits of flour from five thousand loaves of bread. Tiny shards from twenty seven million boring conversations. Prayers.
(Church bells ring)
(Gideon sings)
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Forgive our foolish ways
(David takes off his apron, puts it away. He puts on a jacket)

David (with some pride) Well, it's solid.

(They admire it together. David adores her, but is less comfortable with romance than work)

They have a clumsy kiss across the table. She smiles, heads for the stairs.

David (caught out) Mm?

He joins her, whirls her off on his shoulder, she whoops with delight.

Climate change is already happening and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. The European Union is committed to working constructively for a global agreement to control climate change, and is leading the way by taking ambitious action of its own.
The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. The Earth's average surface temperature has risen by 0.76° C since 1850. Most of the warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities.
In its Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that, without further action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the global average surface temperature is likely to rise by a further 1.8-4.0°C this century, and by up to 6.4°C in the worst case scenario. Even the lower end of this range would take the temperature increase since pre-industrial times above 2°C - the threshold beyond which irreversible and possibly catastrophic changes become far more likely.

Il surriscaldamento del sistema climatico è innegabile, ed è provato dagli studi sull’aumento delle temperature medie dell’aria e degli oceani, dall’esteso scioglimento della neve e dei ghiacci e dall’aumento del livello medio dei mari. Dal 1850, la temperatura media della terra si è innalzata di 0,76° C. Gran parte del riscaldamento globale che si è verificato negli ultimi 50 anni è molto probabilmente dovuto alle azioni umane.

Fußball gehört schon seit vielen Jahren zu den beliebtesten Sportarten in Europa und Südamerika. Auch in Afrika und Asien hat die Begeisterung für diesen Sport stark zugenommen. Die Anfänge des Fußballs finden sich jedoch in China und Japan. Im 3. Jahrhundert wurde erstmal in China eine Sportart entwickelt auf der der heutige Fußballsport beruht. Im Rahmen der militärischen Ausbildung mussten die Soldaten eine mit Federn gefüllt Lederkugel in ein 40 cm großes Netz befördern. In den nächsten Jahrhunderten wurde diese Übung zu einem immer beliebteren Unterhaltungsport und die ersten Regeln wurden festgelegt. 900 nach Christus geriet dieser Sport allerdings in China in Vergessenheit, in derselben Zeit kam in Nachbarland Japan ein ähnlicher Trend zum Ballspiel auf, der sich „Kemari“ nannte. Hier galt es allerdings den Ball mit gezielten Fußstößen so lange wie möglich in der Luft zu halten.
In der Antike kam diese Sportart nach Europa, Griechen und Römer nutzen dieses Spiel zur körperlichen Ertüchtigung ihrer Soldaten. Das sogenannte „Haspartum“ glich allerdings eher dem „American Football“. Auch auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent gab es bei den Majas und Azteken viele fußballähnliche Spiele.
Im Mittelalter wurde Italien zum Mittelpunkt des Fußballspiels. Bei dem „giuoco del calcio“ traten 2 Mannschaften mit je 27 Spielern und je einen Torwart gegeneinander an. Als Tore dienten Zelte und das Spiel wurde von einem Schiedsrichter beobachtet.
Auf ihren Eroberungszügen brachten die Römer den Fußball mit nach Britannien und heute gilt die britische Insel als Geburtsstätte des modernen Fußballs. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts trennten sich die Ballspiele „Rugby“ und „Fußball“ voneinander und 1863 gründete sich in London der erste Fußballverband der Welt, die „Football Association“. Dort wurden auch die ersten Regeln aufgestellt und in der Saison 1871/72 wurde der erste englische Pokal, der FA Cup, ausgespielt.
Nachdem schon viele andere Länder dem Beispiel von England gefolgt waren, zog Deutschland erst 1890 nach, die richtige Fußball Bundesliga folgte erst im Jahre 1963.

Il gioco del calcio è già da molti anni una delle discipline sportive più amate in Europa e in Sud America. La passione per questo sport è molto cresciuta anche in Asia e in Africa. Tuttavia le origini del gioco del calcio risalgono alla Cina e al Giappone. Una disciplina sportiva dalla quale deriva il calcio moderno fu sviluppata originariamente nel III secolo in Cina. Nell’ambito dell’addestramento militare, i soldati dovevano lanciare una palla di cuoio ripiena di piume in una rete di 40 cm. Nei secoli successivi, questo esercizio divenne sempre più uno sport di intrattenimento e furono stabilite le prime regole. Comunque, nel 900 DC questo sport in Cina finì dimenticato; tuttavia nello stesso periodo nacque nel vicino Giappone una simile tendenza al gioco della palla, che si chiamava “Kemari”. Qui ci si concentrava soprattutto a tenere la palla in aria il più a lungo possibile calciandola con i piedi.
Questo sport arrivò in Europa in tempi antichi, i greci e romani si servivano di questo gioco affinché i soldati facessero esercizio fisico. Era chiamato “Haspartum” e assomigliava piuttosto al “Football Americano”. Anche nel continente americano c’erano giochi simili al calcio, praticati dai Maya e dagli Aztechi.
Nel Medioevo, l’Italia diventò il centro del gioco del calcio. Nel “giuoco del calcio” si fronteggiavano due squadre, ognuna composta da 27 uomini e un portiere. Come porte venivano utilizzate delle tende e il gioco veniva sorvegliato da un arbitro.
I Romani portarono il calcio in Britannia durante le loro guerre di conquista e oggi l’isola britannica è considerata il luogo d’origine del calcio moderno. La metà del XIX secolo segnò la separazione tra il “Calcio” e il “Rugby” e nel 1863, a Londra fu fondata la prima federazione calcio del mondo, la “Football Association”. In quella sede furono anche stabilite le prime regole e nella stagione 1871/72 fu messa in palio la prima coppa inglese, la FA Cup (Coppa d’Inghilterra).
Dopo che molti altri paesi ebbero seguito l’esempio inglese, la Germania si unì nel 1890, ma la prima vera Fußball Bundesliga nacque solo nel 1963.
