KT Czech Translations - Kristina Thew

Native Czech speaker, qualified and experienced freelance translator, holder of the Diploma in Translation from English to Czech, with a distinction in Law and a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (membership number 28737), Chartered linguist - translator. Volunteer translator for Translators without Borders.

I have been living and working in the UK since 1995 and have a thorough understanding of the English language and culture. I hold the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, Grade A. My ties with the Czech Republic remain very strong. I regularly visit my family there, watch Czech TV, read newspapers, periodicals, books etc., in order to keep up with linguistic changes.

My specialisations include LEGAL translation (able to offer UK based certification; broad knowledge of both legal systems); BUSINESS & MARKETING; LITERATURE: I have recently translated/adapted a book of magical stories for children. Currently working on another literary project for children. LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT (ten years experience in the field prior to freelance translation). OTHER areas of translation: social sciences, medical - general, clinical trials, health & safety; travel. Some experience in audio transcription; transcreation for the hospitality industry, copywriting for holiday rentals. Trained in proofreading/editing (new products on the market, digital marketing campaign, educational surveys, computer training, cognitive assessments, psychometric testing, various websites, confidentiality statements, labels for food products, humanitarian aid, teaching video subtitles, beauty products etc). Also providing linguistic validation, spot check and back translation services. TYPICAL TRANSLATION PROJECTS:
FAMILY LAW: care plans (child in care), Cafcass case analysis, record of delegated authority, observation of contact, short letters (DNA testing, case updates), social worker's report, section 20 consent, parenting assessments, court statements, general legal documents: birth and marriage certificates, divorce consent statements, apostilles.
OTHER LAW: witness statements, public space protection order, criminal complaint report, data protection notice, code of conduct, non-disclosure agreement, letter of indemnity, clinical trial contract, DBS check, health and safety instructions, fire safety regulations.
BUSINESS and MARKETING: employee surveys (e.g. hiring process, workplace satisfaction, personality questionnaires), employee assessments, GDPR compliance projects, customer complaints, terms and conditions of business for a firm of solicitors, audio transcription and translation of a business conference, training materials, short marketing slogans and posters, description and instructions for new products on the market, finance - VAT returns, company presentations and reports. OTHER TRANSLATION: humanitarian issues, information/communication for homeless people, Red Cross survey, severe learning difficulties report, psychological assessment; medical: pulmonary disease, Hepatitis A, onchocerciasis, rift valley fever; decorative painting and colours, products for anglers.

Substantial translation skills were gained by working on a prestigious EU project - Project EQUAL: Competencies for the Labour Market (training programme for the development of key competencies/soft skills for the labour market). I have literary inclinations, passion for playing with words, with the capacity of producing poetry. I am versatile with regard to text I feel confident to translate, with a remarkable feel for the register.

Full professional Indemnity Insurance and Quality Assurance system in place can give you peace of mind, ensuring timely and accurate translations of the highest quality. I am dedicated and flexible (able to work some evenings and weekends).
