English to Spanish: The Fall of Light (by Nial Williams) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English In the uncertain dawn the gypsies moved and arrived at the western coast with their caravans and carts and horses, the jangling of pots and dangling things announcing them to the small town of Kilkee. They gathered in the open field near the cliffs at the near end of the bay. The horses that pulled the caravans knew where they were going, and the arc of their passage through the soft ground of the field was a clean curving radiant of mudmarks that were only barely recovered from the gypsies' visit the year before. The gypsies got down from their horses and walked in scattered patterns while their women began at once the business of making camp. Finan and Finbar saw the edge of the country for the first time and yelled in manic celebration. In the grey light they ran in wild zigzags across the tufted grass and let the big breeze blow in their hair and open up their chests.
Teige was in the caravan. He watched them from the seatboard, and climbed down slowly and went to the white pony. Thomas had not rejoined them and with the passing of every hour it seemed to his youngest brother that he would not now do so. He was vanished and his erasure was made all the more striking by the vastness of that tumbling ocean. For nothing in the world had seemed as big to Teige Foley, and to watch the sea for only a small time was to become aware of the enormity of creation and the lies of maps that made it seem within the compass of man's understanding. When Teige had returned to the gypsies the previous night he had gone to the caravan of Finan and Finbar and asked them if they should not ride back to Limerick. But the twins had dismissed him. They had been drinking the raw smoky whiskey favoured by the gypsies which inspired in them lewd visions of round women, and they had looked up from their cots briefly with the shadowed downwards eyes of boys discovered in misdemeanour. Then they had turned back to the canvas walls and the dreams therein.
As the morning rose the wind carried swift clouds of all shapes across the sky. They crossed quickly over the grass below in elaborate shadowplay like out-of-favour toys thrown from the heavens. Brilliant blue appeared and disappeared in the spaces between them. The light kept changing. A shower of rain fell down through piercing sunlight and then vanished. From the edge of the field where the gypsies made their camp was a long view of the full strand and the line of white cottages that faced the water.

Source text - English The next morning I rose, opened the curtains, and was confronted by the piercing light of the sun on the snow-covered ice of Lake Superior. The cloudless sky. The blinding view. The huge man made of rock slumbered now on a smooth white sheet, not on the textured dark bed of glimmering water I remembered from my summer arrivals. A thin mist covered his body.
Everything else was clear, precise, and painful to look at under the light that revealed, then blinded. Even when I turned my back to the bay the brilliance persisted, breaking through the large window and into the room. Nothing in my experience of the north shore had prepared me for this season's lucidity. My age was written all over my face in a ruthless hotel mirror. I barely recognised my own hands.
After breakfast I walked on squeaking snow up and down Cumberland Street, in and out of stores until I came across a pair of binoculars in a junk shop. They were well worn, had belonged to a soldier of the Great War, and still housed in their leather case the original instructions for their use, in that nightmare. But they were in perfect repair.
The shopkeeper told me that the temperature was thirty below zero. But the sun, the white blaze, was everywhere and so the chill seemed irrelevant…
I returned to my room with the binoculars in a brown paper bag and began to wait. Almost immediately I pulled the desk chair towards the window. I was determined to face that which was coming towards me. My eyes watered constantly for the first hour, until finally I was able to look at the radiant bay without wincing or weeping, my face tightening under the dried salt. I would gaze through the binoculars, bring the stone giant closer to me for four or five minutes, then let him recede again into the distance. I knew that when Sara appeared – I was certain she had received at least one of my telegrams and that she would appear – she would come into view from around the head of the Sleeping Giant.
Sometimes I read the Bible I had found in the desk drawer. I read the instructions in case of fire on the hotel door. I read the admonitions on the yellowed piece of paper in the binocular case. Every line seemed portentous, charged with meaning. "Try to avoid the reflection of enemy flares in the lenses." "Proceed in an orderly fashion to the stairwell or the fire escape." "How sweet are thy words unto my taste, yea sweeter than honey to my mouth." The rest of the time I looked out over Thunder Bay – either with the binoculars, or without.
