En La Vida de los Animales, el Nobel J. M. Coetzee condena, a través del personaje Elisabeth Costello, la crueldad en el trato de algunas especies domesticadas, cuya existencia se limita a pasar del “huevo” a la guillotina. El discurso de Joaquin Phoenix, en los premios Oscar 2020, aporta en la misma dirección. Costello se apena por los pollos enjaulados y las ratas blancas, como los guardapolvos que las encarcelan. Repudia la crueldad, y genera controversia comparando el trato de los animales industrializados con el Holocausto: seres vivos cosificados como sólo un Descartes bajo efecto de las drogas psicodélicas habría podido imaginar. Costello podría haber expandido su crítica a representantes de especies naturales, por ejemplo los cientos de millones de peces, a veces desperdiciados por considerárselos “inservibles” al comercio, a los que ni siquiera se ve como animales silvestres, mucho menos individuos. Al ojo de la mayoría, los peces son todos iguales... Y hablando de Roma… el imperio del Coronavirus, cuya cepa de moda surge en China, logró finalmente apuntar la linterna (lejos de ser un reflector) al mercado de animales salvajes como el de Wuhan. Estos mercados, que se sostienen en la captura y comercialización de la vida silvestre, son fuente de enfermedades transmitidas al humano por animales a los que primero se arranca de su medio y luego, maltrato de por medio, se venden al mejor postor. Se trata de una actividad comercial que destruye ambientes, amenaza especies y, de paso, desparrama zoonosis. En el contexto actual de pandemia viral salen a la luz los mercados de la muerte. Pero rápidamente la humanidad los pasa por alto, ocupada como está en taparse la nariz para transitar aeropuertos. Si esa misma humanidad “embarbijada” se hubiera detenido antes apensar en lo inaceptable de estas prácticas, bien podría hoy no tener que lucir máscaras. Y ya que estamos destapando la olla, porqué no traer al ruedo el tráfico de mascotas.¿Tiene idea el lector con tortuga de jardín o pájaro en jaula de dónde proviene el “adorno”? El tráfico ilegal de animales y plantas mueve plata como la droga. Es un comercio sin escrúpulos que afecta desde crías de orangután a pájaros y peces, sapos, culebras, arañas, insectos y un arsenal de otros esclavos transportados en Arcas de tortura hastael lugar donde sesubasta la vida degradada. No se necesita ir a China para encontrarse con estos criminales. En Wuhan, dónde aparentemente se origina la saga del Covid-19, se vendían animales en peligro de extinción. Los pangolines, por ejemplo, mamíferos oriundos de Asia y África tan raros como perseguidos. Tres de las cuatro especies asiáticas de pangolines se encuentran casi extinguidas. Es improbable que se salven, cargan la mala suerte de que se los aprecie de la carne a las escamas que le cubren el cuerpo, a las que se atribuyan cuestionables propiedades medicinales. ¿Cuándo se van a revisar algunas tradiciones? ¿Querrá decir que lo que empieza alguna vez en la historia ya no cambia? ¿Cuándo se va a parar de consumir polvo de cuerno de rinoceronte, vesícula biliar de oso, y testículos de tigre? Algunas personas comen literalmente cualquier cosa que diagnostiquen viva, medusas, lengua de cocodrilo o aletas de tiburón. Ocurre en todas partes, y no es por necesidad. En China, se paga caro el antojo gourmet. Sarah Boseley, editora de temas de salud de The Guardian, cuenta (24 de enero 2020), que los chinos ricos llevan a sus amigos a cenar a restaurantes de fauna silvestre. Los italianos comen ranas, los franceses caracoles, los mejicanos insectos. No se trata de muertos de hambre. Estas personas son responsables de una parte significativa de lo que padecen muchas especies. El gobierno chino cierra el mercado de Wuhan, pero hará la vista gorda cuando se reabra; el negocio es enorme. Y no se piense que lo cierra por los pangolines en peligro. Lo hace por el impacto sobre la humanidad de las costumbres de algunos ciudadanos. El mundo otorga decisión soberana sobre estos temas cuando el peligro de pandemia es global. El padecimiento es compartido pero la decisión de actuar sobre la causa queda en manos de que cada país haga como se le antoja. ¿Es razonable? Hay que cerrar los mercados de fauna silvestre. El mundo se cubre la nariz y no por repugnancia. Pero si no se acaba el comercio abusivo de vida silvestre vamos a vivir con el barbijo puesto. Y si no se acaba el abuso del pollo vamos a vivir con vergüenza. Y si no se detiene al traficante de vida vamos a vivir en sociedades viciadas. Hay que cerrar los mercados de fauna silvestre, perseguir y condenar a los que trafican con especies ilegalmente, a los que sostienen el derecho a hacer lo que les plazca con los animales, aunque la ignorancia les transpire por los poros. ¿Se puede esperar respeto al humano cuando no se lo tiene para con la formas de la vida en general? Ese es el sentido de la pregunta: parte de las formas de vida y llega a nosotros. Los filósofos carecen de teoría moral que integre bajo el mismo lenguaje de valor a todas las formas de vida. La norma ética viene rezagada y mientras tanto deja lugar al imperio de los sentimientos. Estamos en problemas. Claudio Campagna es médico y biólogo (UBA).

The current outbreak of Coronavirus, whose strain was originated in China, has enabled us to focus the spotlight on wildlife markets like the one in Wuhan. These kinds of markets, which rely on wildlife capture and trade, are a source of animal-to-human-transmitted diseases. Animals sold there had been violently extracted from their natural habitat, subjected to abuse, and then sold to the highest bidder. This is a commercial activity that destroys habitats, threatens species and, on top of that, it spreads zoonosis.
In the current context of viral pandemics, the existence of evil wildlife markets, such as the one in Wuham, are brought to the public light. However, they are soon forgotten, since the whole world is just too busy wearing face masks to go around international airports. If human beings had rejected the evil practices carried out in wildlife markets before, wearing face masks right now might have been avoided. And since we are shedding light on this kind of issues why don’t we talk about pet trafficking? Do our readers owning a land turtle or a caged bird know where such “ornaments” came from?
Illegal trafficking of animal and plant species is a highly profitable business, just like drug trafficking is. It is an unscrupulous trade business which affects species ranging from orangutan broods, birds and fish to toads, snakes, spiders and insects, and so many other slaves transported in torture arks to the places where their degraded lives are offered for auction. There is no need to go to China to find this kind of criminals. In the Wuhan market, where the current Covid-19 was apparently originated, endangered animals were traded. For instance, pangolins, mammals which live in Asia and Africa, are a species both rare and commonly poached. Three out of the four Asian pangolins species are almost extinct. They are probably doomed to disappear, since they are sought after, because of their meat and their scales which are valued for having doubtful medicinal properties.
When will some traditions be subjected to revision? Does this mean history is unchangeable? When will the consumption of rhino horn powder, bear gallbladder, and tiger testicles be stopped? Some people can literally eat anything labeled as alive: jellyfish, crocodile tongue or shark fins. It happens everywhere and is not only done out of need.
In China, gourmet cravings are expensive. Sarah Broseley, health editor of The Guardian, points out that wealthy Chinese people take their friends out for dinner at wildlife restaurants (Jan 24th, 2020). Italians eat frogs, the French eat snails, Mexicans eat insects. It is not about starvation. These people are partly responsible for the suffering inflicted to many species.
The Chinese government has shut down the Wuhan market, but they will turn a blind eye on it, once it is reopened because the business is just too profitable. The shutdown was not due to the endangered pangolins, but because of the serious impact certain local traditions have had over the whole world. Facing a possible global pandemics, the world grants sovereignty over these issues. The suffering is shared but the decision to tackle the cause falls into the hands of every country. Is that sensible?
Wildlife markets must be shut down. The world is wearing a face mask, but it is not in disgust. If the abusive and illegal trade of wildlife does not come to an end, we will continue living with a mask. If chicken and hen exploitation does not come to an end, we will live with shame. If all the trafficking does not come to an end, we will live tainted lives. Wildlife markets must be shut down. Illegal traders, who ignorantly believe they have the right to do as they please, must be chased and punished. How can we expect people to respect each other when they are unable to respect other forms of life? The meaning of this question begins with the love to all forms of life and reach us.
Philosophers lack a moral theory that unifies, under the same language, the value of all forms of life. Ethical norms are one step behind while feelings are let loose to reign. We are in serious problems.

It remains unclear how long the pandemic will last. The Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-1920, on the other hand, came in three waves with the majority of deaths being concentrated concentrated in the second wave during three brutal months in the Autumn of 2018.
