I am a Basque graduate physicist working on my Astrophysics Ph. D in Slovenia, with native fluency in both Basque and Spanish. During my undergraduate studies in physics, I studied technical writing and translation for physicists.
Currently, besides my research work, I am working as translator for the Slovenian Institute for Quality and Metrology (SiQ). In this position I have translated over 130,000 words on procedures for standards-compliance verification and standards-related legislation from English (US) to Spanish (Spain) and vice versa.
My specialty are scientific and technical texts, with an emphasis on the physical sciences, mathematics, and computer/network technology; as well as legal texts dealing with technical regulations, inspection procedures, standards compliance, etc. Besides, I am very familiar with the terminology of board and role-playing games (it is one of my main hobbies) and am able to translate gaming rule sets between Spanish and English (US).
I believe that context is essential in understanding the purpose of a document, and gladly contact clients to ask for clarification about ambiguous details in the source text, or where is it going to be used, in order to ensure that the end work is as faithful and useful to the client as possible. In the case that such communication is not possible, I submit extensive translation notes along with the finished document explaining any nuances in meaning, different possible interpretations of ambiguous source sentences, etc.
My main working software:
- Office suites:OpenOffice.org 3.2 and MS Office 2007;
- CAT software: Wordfast Pro 5.0;
All my translation work is stored in a Dropbox folder on my main computer, which copies its contents over an encrypted connection to two other computers and to the off-site Dropbox storage servers, thus ensuring no data are lost.
