Difícil precisar o que é juventude. Quem não se considera jovem hoje em dia? O conceito de juventude é bem elástico: dos 18 aos 40, todos os adultos são jovens. A juventude é um estado de espírito, é um jeito de corpo, é um sinal de saúde e disposição, é um perfil do consumidor, uma fatia do mercado em que todos querem se incluir. Parece humilhante deixar de ser jovem e ingressar naquele período da vida em que os mais complacentes nos olham com piedade e simpatia e, para não utilizar a palavra ofensiva - velhice -, preferem o eufemismo “terceira idade”. Passamos de uma longa, longuíssima juventude, direto para a velhice, deixando vazio o lugar que deveria ser ocupado pelo adulto. O cineasta Jean- Luc Godard, sempre antenado nos sintomas do sofrimento e da alienação contemporâneos, faz os personagens de seu filme, Elogio ao amor (2001), repetirem insistentemente a pergunta: qu’est que c’est un adult? Evidentemente Godard deixa a questão sem resposta.

It´s hard to precise what is youth. Who doesn´t consider themselves young nowadays? The concept of youth is quite flexible: from 18 to 40, all adults are young. Youth is a state of mind, it´s a body way, it´s a sign of health and will, it´s a consumer profile, a market piece in which everyone wants to include themselves. It seems humiliating not being young and start in that life period in which the most complacent ones look at us with mercy and sympathy and, to not use the offensive word - old age -, prefer the euphemism “third age”. We passed from a long, very long youth, straight to the old age, leaving empty the place that should be occupied by the adult. The filmmaker Jean- Luc-Godard, always tuned on the symptoms of the contemporary suffering and alienation, make the characters of his movie, Praise of Love (2001), constantly repeat the question: qu’est que c’est un adult? Evidently, Godard leaves the question without an answer.
