Der vom Swissalpine ausgelagerte polysportive Teamwettkampf mit der Bezeichnung Alpinathlon besticht bei seiner Erstaustragung in dieser Art durch eine äusserst attraktive Strecke. In sieben Abschnitten führt er am
20. Juli von St. Moritz auf die Davoser Schatzalp.

Der Alpinathlon bildet quasi den „Aufgalopp“ zum Swissalpine (bisherige Bezeichnung Swiss Alpine Marathon Davos), der sich für die 23. Durchführung vom 26. Juli ein neues Erscheinungsbild verpasst hat und nun wieder eine reine Laufveranstaltung ist. „Die Ausgliederung bringt viele Vorteile mit sich“, sagt Andrea Tuffli, der den beiden Anlässen als OK-Präsident vorsteht. Zum einen wird dadurch die Publizität und damit verbunden die Beachtung in der Öffentlichkeit erhöht – in der Swissalpine-Berichterstattung ging der beliebte Teambewerb nahezu unter –, zum anderen ermöglicht die Auslagerung neben einem Doppelstart die Ausweitung des Wettkampfgebiets aufs nahe gelegene Engadin.
Identische Streckenführung
Dieser Umstand dürfte für die Veranstaltung von unschätzbarem Wert sein, zumal der Alpinathlon in St. Moritz und somit einem weltbekannten Kurort startet. Den Auftakt bildet der 16,3 Kilometer lange Inline-Skating-Abschnitt, der – abgesehen von der umgekehrten Richtung – dem ersten Teil des Engadin-Inline-Marathons entspricht und somit über die für den Verkehr gesperrte Kantonsstrasse nach Maloja führt. Jene Teilnehmer, welche den polysportiven Wettkampf nicht allein bewältigen möchten, übergeben dann dem Mountainbiker. Auf ihn warten 24,9 Kilometer bis nach Pontresina, wobei zwischen Sils und Silvaplana dem See entlang gefahren wird.
Mit dem Rennvelo gehts anschliessend über den Albulapass nach Bergün; dieser Abschnitt misst 34,2 Kilometer. Von nun an ist der Parcours praktisch identisch mit dem K78 des Swissalpine. Das erste Laufteilstück (13,7 Kilometer) führt auf die Keschhütte, die mit ihren 2632 Metern Meereshöhe den Kulminationspunkt bildet, das zweite (11,5 Kilometer) über den Panoramatrail sowie den Scalettapass zum Dürrboden und das dritte (13,9 Kilometer) weiter zum Bolgen in Davos. Zum Abschluss des Alpinathlons steht dann nochmals ein Mountainbike-Abschnitt auf dem Programm; er ist acht Kilometer lang und endet nach einer Zusatzschlaufe beim kulturhistorisch bedeutungsvollen Hotel auf der Schatzalp.

The allure of this multi-sport team competition, to be held this year for the first time since being separated out of the Swissalpine and given the new title of Alpinathlon, lies in its extremely attractive route. With seven sections, the route leads from St Moritz to the Schatzalp in Davos on 20th July.

The Alpinathlon is, so to speak, the ‘run-up’ to the Swissalpine (formerly known as the Swiss Alpine Marathon Davos), which has undergone a transformation in time for its 23rd anniversary on 26th July, and has become purely a running event once again. “The separation has its advantages”, says Andrea Tuffli, who, as OK President, is in charge of both events. On the one hand, it will result in increased publicity, along with a higher public profile – the popular team event was practically ignored in the media coverage of the Swissalpine – and on the other hand, the uncoupling and the separate start time mean that the area covered by the competition can be extended into nearby Engadine.
Identical route
The new situation has been immeasurably beneficial for the event, the more so as the Alpinathlon starts in St Moritz – a world-renowned spa. The initial stretch consists of the 16.3 kilometer inline skating section, which, albeit in the opposite direction, forms the first part of the Engadine Inline Marathon, using the Kantonsstrasse (which will be closed to traffic) to Maloja. Those participants not wishing to undertake the multi-sport competition alone, will then hand over to the mountain bikers. Awaiting the latter is a 24.9 kilometer stretch to Pontresina, which follows the edge of the lake between Sils and Silvaplana.
The racing bike section follows, with the 34.2 kilometer route going over the Albula Pass to Bergün. From this point on, the course is practically identical to that of the Swissalpine’s K78. The first running section (13.7 kilometers) leads up to the Kesch-Hütte – the highest point of the race at an altitude of 2,632 meters above sea level; the second run (11.5 kilometers) follows the Panorama trail and Scaletta Pass to Dürrboden, and the third (13.9 kilometers) continues on to Bolgen in Davos. For the final part of the Alpinathlon, a second mountain biking section covers eight kilometers, finishing after an extra loop at the historic hotel on the Schatzalp.
