Magia e ilusión inundan las calles de Madrid durante todo el mes de diciembre. Luces y mercados adornan la ciudad, que ofrece una amplia programación cultural y de ocio para todos los públicos.
Son las fiestas más esperadas por todos, no solo por los más pequeños. Cuando llega el mes de diciembre, las calles de Madrid cambian su aspecto habitual gracias a las luces y otros recursos artísticos y decorativos que inundan cada rincón. Cuando a punto está de cumplir 400 años, la Plaza Mayor sigue siendo ese lugar por el que hay que pasar para disfrutar del mejor ambiente y, sobre todo, de su tradicional mercado, con objetos y regalos perfectos para estas fechas.
La Navideña Feria Internacional de las Culturas
El completo programa de actividades que tendrá lugar los últimos días del año arranca con la segunda edición de la Navideña Feria Internacional de las Culturas, que se inaugura en Matadero Madrid el 15 de diciembre con un concierto a cargo de la Banda Sinfónica Municipal y los artistas Rayden y Alana.
Hasta el día 23 habrá talleres gastronómicos, un ciclo de villancicos, desfiles de moda, exposiciones, cine… Todo eso, y mucho más, ocurrirá en este gran encuentro, plural y diverso, en el que participan 75 embajadas. Aprender más sobre sus tradiciones es uno de los objetivos principales de este evento que nace de la consciencia de la complejidad social y cultural de Madrid y del mundo. Así, niños y mayores encontrarán en Matadero un lugar mágico donde jugar, cantar, bailar, comprar artesanía de distintos países e intercambiar conocimientos. En total habrá 250 actividades, más de 60 de carácter gratuito.
También en Matadero Madrid, en la Casa del Lector, se podrá ver, hasta el 8 de enero, Noche de Sol, segunda exposición internacional de Belenes. Una muestra que, además de su componente artístico, permitirá descubrir multitud de culturas desde el punto de vista antropológico, simbólico, histórico y etnográfico.
A estas actividades se une la cita solidaria 1.000 voces de Malagasy Gospel, un doble concierto en la Caja Mágica (días 17 y 18) en el que 22 niñas de Ankalika, uno de los barrios más pobres de Tulear (Madagascar) se juntan a casi una treintena de corales procedentes de diferentes puntos de la Península para formar un coro de mil niñas y adolescentes.
DESFILE DE LUZ
Una de las novedades de este año será un desfile de luz que llenará Madrid Río de elementos lumínicos la tarde y noche del 21 de diciembre, día que se celebra el solsticio de invierno. Esta fiesta en forma de pasacalle comenzará a las 19:00 h y recorrerá el entorno del puente del Rey. El desfile contará con la participación de compañías de artes escénicas de calle y de colectivos sociales y culturales que organizarán talleres creativos para la construcción de los farolillos. El colofón será un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales inspirado en una paleta de colores que representará la transición entre el otoño y el invierno.
CENTROCENTRO
La Galería de Cristal de CentroCentro se convertirá, entre el 21 de diciembre y el 6 de enero, en un gran paisaje invernal, con pistas de hielo, iglús en los que se realizarán talleres creativos y pequeños espectáculos de magia, un Belén, un árbol de Navidad reciclado… ¡hasta caerán copos de nieve! Además, el Patio de Operaciones acogerá cada día actuaciones de coros navideños.
CONDE DUQUE
Talleres, teatro música, danza y magia serán algunas de las actividades que tendrán lugar en los diferentes espacios de Conde Duque entre el 23 de diciembre y el 5 de enero. Habrá uno especial para bebés, que favorecerá su expresión corporal y emocional, y otro diseñado para la lectura, Boookids, en el que estarán disponibles publicaciones infantiles de editoriales independientes.
Se realizarán en total 18 espectáculos (cuatro sesiones diarias) para grandes y pequeños, aunque, sin duda, será la última creación de Architects of Air, Katena, lo que más llamará la atención de todos, gracias a sus particulares luminarias. ¿Y qué son? Pues estructuras hinchables monumentales que esconden deslumbrantes laberintos de senderos y cúpulas, en las que el color, la geometría y la música se combinan para excitar los sentidos… ¡No hay dos visitas iguales! La atmósfera cambia según la luz y la climatología exterior.
LA CABALGATA
Una oda a la curiosidad. Ese es el leit motiv de toda la programación navideña de este año y, en especial, de la Cabalgata, que tendrá lugar la tarde del 5 de enero por las calles de Madrid y terminará, como es habitual, en la plaza de Cibeles, en la que habrá diferentes espectáculos, igual que en otras plazas por donde pase la comitiva. Una comitiva que este año recordará el afán de conocimiento que guió a los Reyes Magos en su viaje, ese mismo que ha movido al hombre durante siglos a lanzarse a la aventura y explorar el planeta. Habrá teatro acrobático, marionetas gigantes, desfiles coreografiados… y muchas sorpresas.
Y ADEMÁS…
La programación de las fiestas se completa con talleres de gastronomía en diferentes mercados municipales, un ciclo de conciertos en cinco iglesias de distintos distritos, una pista de hielo en la plaza de Colón y un original Discopatín en la plaza de Neptuno. Dos últimas propuestas: un recorrido en Naviluz, el bus de la Navidad de la EMT, operativo del 1 de diciembre al 6 de enero, y el Concierto de Reyes del Teatro Real el 5 de enero, a cargo de la Orquesta Sinfónica Municipal de Madrid y el grupo Amaral. ¡Felices fiestas!
Circo Price en Navidad
Celebrar estas fiestas en la pista del Teatro Circo Price se ha convertido en una cita imprescindible para miles de personas de todas las edades. El espectáculo con el que en esta ocasión dará la bienvenida al año nuevo nos trae un delicioso y divertido viaje de la mano de acróbatas, trapecistas, clowns y otras fabulosas criaturas. A visit to Plaza Mayor, which will soon celebrate its 400th anniversary, is still a must for those looking to enjoy the best seasonal atmosphere and, above all, its traditional market, which has the perfect articles and gifts for the holiday season.
The International Christmas Fair of Cultures
The extensive programme of activities scheduled for the final days of 2016 will kick off with the second edition of the International Christmas Fair of Cultures, which will begin at Matadero Madrid on 15 December with a concert by the Municipal Symphonic Band and the artists Rayden and Alana.
Until the 23rd there will be gastronomic workshops, a Christmas carol series, fashion shows, exhibitions, films… This large, multi-faceted and diverse event will offer all of this and much more, and will feature the participation of 75 embassies. Learning more about traditions in their countries is one of the main aims of this event, which was created in recognition of the social and cultural complexity of Madrid and of the world in general. At Matadero, children and adults alike will find a magical place in which to play, sing, dance, buy handicrafts from different countries and exchange knowledge. A total of 250 activities will be offered, over 60 of which will be free of charge.
Also at Matadero Madrid, in Casa del Lector, the second international nativity scene exhibition, Noche de Sol (Night of Sun), will be on display until 8 January. In addition to its artistic allure, the exhibition will allow visitors to discover a myriad of cultures from an anthropological, symbolic, historical and ethnographical standpoint.
In addition to these activities, the double charity concert 1.000 voces de Malagasy Gospel will be held at Caja Mágica (17th and 18th). It will see 22 girls from Ankalika, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Toliara (Madagascar), join together with nearly thirty choirs from various parts of the Iberian Peninsula to form a choir of one thousand preadolescent and teenage girls.
PARADE OF LIGHT
A new entry in this year’s programme, the parade will fill Madrid Río Park with lights and luminous objects on the evening and night of 21 December, the day of the winter solstice. This party in the form of a parade will start at 7pm and will wind through the area around the Puente del Rey bridge. The parade will feature the participation of street performing arts companies as well as social and cultural associations which will hold creative workshops on building lanterns. The grand finale will be a fireworks display inspired by a palette of colours representing the transition from autumn to winter.
CENTROCENTRO
From 21 December to 6 January the Glass Gallery at CentroCentro will turn into a winter wonderland with ice skating rinks, igloos that will host creative workshops and small magic shows, a nativity scene, a recycled Christmas tree … and even falling snowflakes! In addition, the Patio de Operaciones (Operations Hall) will host performances by Christmas choirs every day.
CONDE DUQUE
Workshops, musical theatre, dance and magic are some of the activities that will be offered in Conde Duque’s various spaces between 23 December and 5 January. There will be a special event for infants that will encourage their corporal and emotional expression as well as an event devoted to reading, Boookids, where children’s publications by various independent publishers will be available to the public.
A total of 18 shows (four sessions per day) will be held for adults and children alike, although Katena, the latest creation by Architects of Air, is sure to be the main focus of everyone’s attention thanks to its unique luminaires… And what are those? They’re enormous inflatable structures that conceal dazzling labyrinths of pathways and domes, where colour, geometry and music unite to electrify the senses … No two visits are the same! The ambience changes depending on the outside light and weather conditions.
THE THREE KINGS PARADE
An ode to curiosity – that is the leitmotif that runs through the entire Christmas programme this year, especially the Three Kings Parade, which will make its way through the streets of Madrid in the evening on 5 January before reaching its usual final destination, Plaza de Cibeles, which will host various shows, as will the other squares through which the procession passes. This year the procession will evoke the thirst for knowledge that led the Three Kings on their journey, the same thirst which for centuries has driven man to plunge into adventure and explore the planet. There will be acrobatic theatre, gigantic puppets, choreographed displays… and a whole host of surprises.
AND WHAT’S MORE…
The holiday programme will be rounded off by gastronomic workshops in various municipal markets, a series of concerts held in five churches in different districts, an ice skating rink in Plaza de Colón and an original Discoskate rink in Plaza de Neptuno. Here are two final suggestions: a ride on Naviluz, the Christmas bus operated by EMT, Madrid’s municipal transport service, which runs from 1 December to 6 January, and the Epiphany Concert at Teatro Real on 5 January by the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Madrid and the band Amaral. Entre el 22 y el 26 de febrero, Madrid se convierte en la capital mundial del arte contemporáneo con la celebración de su gran feria anual, que alcanza su 36ª edición.
La Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid arranca esta nueva edición con un objetivo claro: consolidarse como feria de descubrimiento de nuevos talentos y contenidos para coleccionistas y profesionales. Para ello cuenta con un Programa General, en el que participan 160 galerías, a las que hay que sumar las participantes en el resto de secciones comisariadas: Argentina Plataforma ARCO, con doce, Diálogos, con otras doce y Opening, con 16. La mayor parte de ellas presentará proyectos enfocados a la presentación de uno o dos artistas de distintos entornos, reforzando a ARCOmadrid como espacio para el conocimiento de la obra de autores de distintas generaciones.
La participación de Argentina como país invitado viene a consolidar este año la proyección de la feria como gran referente latinoamericano en Europa. En este contexto, también Madrid se volcará en mostrar su mejor acento latino con diferentes muestras que tendrán lugar en los principales centros de arte y museos de la ciudad. Así podrán visitarse las exposiciones sobre la colección Isabel y Agustín Coppel, en la Fundación Banco Santander, la colección Hochschild, en la sala Alcalá 31, la colección Costantini, en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, y las dedicadas a Diego Bianchi y Luis Garay en Matadero Madrid y Leandro Erlich, en el Espacio Fundación Telefónica, entre otras.
A la alta fidelización de las galerías que forman parte este año en ARCOmadrid hay que añadir la presencia de otras nuevas así como de países emergentes, que sirven para dibujar los rasgos que perfilan una edición coherente y de calidad. Entre los participantes destacan Alexander and Bonin, Chantal Crousel, Jan Mot/Sprueth Magers, Lisson Gallery y Team Gallery, además de otras importantes que mantienen su interés por la feria como Carlier Gebauer, Esther Shipper, Jocelyn Wolff y Kow, y algunas incorporaciones como Dvir, Jablonka Maruani Mercier Gallery, Labor, Michel Rein, Nara Roesler, Supportico Lopez y Tanya Bonakdar.

La feria vuelve a dar cabida este año a la propuesta SOLO/DUO. De las galerías seleccionadas, más de 20 dedicarán su estand a uno o dos artistas entre los que se encuentran Alan Charlton, Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Ignasi Aballí, José María Sicilia o Tomás Saraceno. Por su parte, Argentina Plataforma ARCO presentará artistas reconocidos internacionalmente como Alberto Greco, Eduardo Stupia y Mirtha Dermisache, junto a otros a descubrir por el público como Diego Bianchi, Pablo Accinelli o Sol Pipkin.
El programa Diálogos contará con las galerías seleccionadas por María de Corral, Lorena Martínez de Corral y Catalina Lozano cuyos estands generarán contenidos nuevos a la vez que servirán para presentar la obra de sus artistas en profundidad. Entre estos, Diango Hernández y Roman Ondak, así como los argentinos Eduardo Navarro, Irene Kopelman y Tomás Saraceno. Finalmente, Opening volverá a centrarse en galerías con una trayectoria de un máximo de siete años con el objetivo de aportar nueva información y experiencias estéticas. From 22 to 26 February Madrid will become the global capital of contemporary art as it hosts its annual fair, now in its 36th edition.
The International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid kicks off a new edition with a clear aim: to firmly establish itself as a fair where collectors and industry professionals can discover new talent and material. To this end it features a General Programme in which 160 galleries take part, in addition to those that participate in the other curated sections: Argentina Plataforma ARCO, with twelve galleries, Dialogues, with another twelve, and Opening, with sixteen. Most of the galleries will offer up projects focused on presenting one or two artists from different backgrounds, strengthening ARCOmadrid’s status as a space in which to discover the work of artists from varying generations.

Against this backdrop, Madrid will also strive to show off its most impressive Latin American side, with various exhibitions taking place in the city’s main art centres and museums. Los bancos y cajas que no alcancen el listón disponen de apenas quince días hábiles para presentar al regulador su plan de recapitalización. Si en septiembre no lo han cumplido, el estado entrará en su capital. El baile de cifras sobre las necesidades de capital de la banca española debería concluir hoy. La previsión del Gobierno sitúa la exigencia en un máximo de 20.000 millones. Pero las firmas de inversión se mueven en una horquilla que oscila entre los 17.000 millones de Moody’s y los 120.000 millones de UBS. Today is critical for Spain’s banking sector. In a few hours the Banco de España will release its conclusions on the recapitalisation needs of Spain’s commercial and savings banks. Data released by Spain’s central bank will include a list of banks that do not meet new solvency ratio requirements, as well as estimates of how much they must raise in order to do so. Banks that fail to make the cut will have just fifteen days to submit a recapitalisation plan to the Banco de España. If the plan does not bear fruit by September the government will take a stake in the bank’s equity. Confusion and uncertainty over the cost of recapitalising Spain’s banking sector should be cleared up today. The government estimates the cost at no more than €20 billion, but calculations by investment firms range from Moody’s estimate of €17 billion to UBS’ estimate of €120 billion. Yesterday Goldman Sachs placed the figure between €22 billion and €59 billion.

Source text - Spanish RESUMEN: Este artículo, en el que se analizan los fundamentos teóricos de la tragicomedia, examina las ideas sobre el decoro literario en las que se sustentaron las definiciones tradicionales de los géneros dramáticos. Dentro de este contexto, se argumenta cómo el surgimiento del “tercer género” estuvo ligado a un cambio de criterio en la adecuación del teatro al concepto de decoro literario. Según se plantea, este concepto dejará progresivamente de condicionar el tipo de personajes asociados a los distintos géneros para pasar a determinar tan solo el estilo empleado en función de la situación dramática y la condición de los personajes.

La reflexión sobre la naturaleza de la tragedia y la comedia se remonta a un inquietante pasaje de Platón, con el que el filósofo cierra su célebre diálogo sobre el amor. A la mañana siguiente al banquete que da título al coloquio, Aristodemo, testigo de las conversaciones entre Sócrates y otros invitados de Agatón, despierta y observa que solo el anfitrión de la casa, Aristófanes y Sócrates permanecen despiertos, dialogando y bebiendo de una enorme copa. Aristodemo no recuerda las palabras de estos, porque su sueño le ha impedido seguir el hilo desde el comienzo, pero retiene en su memoria una última afirmación que Sócrates obliga a reconocer a sus contertulios, supuestamente como conclusión de los argumentos precedentes. En su opinión, los dramaturgos cuentan con una misma facultad para componer comedias y tragedias. Quien es poeta trágico por naturaleza también es comediógrafo. Después de esto, los invitados se duermen, hasta que finaliza la obra con la salida de Sócrates, camino del Liceo.
Pese a la vaguedad del pasaje, no faltan autores para quienes las palabras de Sócrates presuponen la existencia de unos principios comunes a los dos géneros. “Clearly —asevera Guthke (1966: 4)— Socrates must have pointed out certain principles, thematic, structural or other, that tragedy and comedy have in common”. Por lo demás, este crítico advierte una línea de pensamiento ininterrumpida, que estaría representada, por ejemplo, en Thomas Mann, al afirmar que la comedia y la tragedia “grow on the same tree, and a change of lighting suffices to make one into the other” (51). En efecto, el personaje del Banquete no alude explícitamente a ninguna propiedad común a los dos géneros, pero el hecho mismo de que podamos oponer dos elementos cualesquiera implica que estos poseen un carácter relacional, es decir, que comparten características que nos permiten establecer grados de comparación. De este modo, el planteamiento abre las puertas a una posible justificación teórica de la tragicomedia, concepto que encontramos enunciado por vez primera en el Anfitrión de Plauto.
En cualquier caso, a partir de la Poética de Aristóteles, la distinción entre lo cómico y lo trágico se sustentó en un conjunto de rasgos bien definidos. En primer lugar, esta radica en la condición de sus personajes: la comedia es entendida como “a mimesis of inferior persons” (Aristotle, Poetics, 1449a), frente a “a mimesis of an action —that is, it is [morally] serious and purposeful, having magnitude; uttered in heightened language […]” (Aristotle, Poetics, 1449b). Hay, pues, una clase de personaje asociada a cada género y, paralelamente, una diversidad estilística condicionada por las situaciones dramáticas . En cuanto al empleo de un estilo específico en cada género, Aristóteles apoyó sus observaciones teóricas en la descripción de la historia literaria, en particular en aquellas obras más próximas.
La Poética de Aristóteles, por tanto, no es solo un tratado de preceptiva literaria. Junto a la reglamentación teórica, el Estagirita asume en ocasiones un punto de vista historiográfico, como cuando alude a las aportaciones de Esquilo a la historia de la tragedia (Aristóteles, Poética, 1449a). Difícilmente se podría aspirar, por otra parte, a un mayor grado de complejidad e imbricación conceptual con otras disciplinas como la retórica o la ética. Pero lo que más llama la atención en este tratado es la solidez argumentativa. A Aristóteles se le considera como autoridad en cuanto tal, por tradición, pero también porque su sistema teórico resulta irrefutable en lo concerniente al teatro ateniense en el que se basa su pensamiento .
Junto a los lugares de la Poética aducidos, conviene considerar el desarrollo dado a las ideas sobre el estilo en el Perì léxeōs, tratado incluido en la Retórica, donde el autor sostiene la conveniencia de una adecuación del registro estilístico a la gravedad de la materia, la intención comunicativa y las características socioculturales del emisor . En concreto, la adecuación conlleva “that we must neither speak casually about weighty matters, nor solemnly about trivial ones […]”; por otra parte, “the language of disgust and discreet reluctance to utter a word when speaking of impiety or foulness; the language of exultation for a tale of glory, and that of humiliation for a tale of and so in all other cases”; y, en tercer lugar, “If, then, a speaker uses the very words which are in keeping with a particular disposition, he will reproduce the corresponding character; for a rustic and an educated man will not say the same things nor speak in the same way” (1408a).
Detengámonos, antes de proseguir la exposición, en un problema teórico fundamental. Al ocuparse de los rasgos de la tragedia y la comedia, algunos críticos —remito a las valiosas aportaciones de Vitse (1988: 308; y 1983)— privilegian la importancia de la intención comunicativa y del efecto producido sobre el espectador, es decir, la compasión o el distanciamiento provocados por la tragedia y la comedia, respectivamente. En consonancia con este planteamiento, Arellano (2011: 16) atribuye un valor secundario a otros rasgos como la condición social de los personajes, el registro estilístico o el tipo de situaciones dramáticas y su disposición en la trama. Así pues, los géneros dramáticos se opondrían por la presencia o ausencia de un único rasgo; y, en función de la implicación trágica o el distanciamiento cómico del espectador, estaríamos ante un género u otro. Como es lógico, dada su naturaleza binaria, la asunción de este criterio diferenciador impide la aceptación de un tercer género . Y el caso es que, analizados a la luz de este parámetro, los textos en los que basa su estudio Arellano (circunscritos a la producción de Lope y de Calderón) parecen refrendar esta posición teórica.
Sin embargo, existen factores, tanto teóricos como histórico-literarios, que, a mi juicio, nos instan a ampliar —no necesariamente a refutar— el enfoque del problema. Por una parte, desde el punto de vista fáctico, si atendemos a las producciones dramáticas españolas del s. XVI, además de tener en consideración la mezcla de elementos genéricos en otros países europeos, tomamos conciencia de múltiples ensayos literarios no reductibles a la casuística representada en algunas obras de Lope y Calderón .
De otra parte, según pretendo demostrar en estas páginas, todos los rasgos barajados desde Aristóteles para diferenciar los géneros dramáticos —tanto el privilegiado por ciertos críticos (implicación o distanciamiento del receptor) como aquellos supuestamente secundarios (tipos de personajes, registro estilístico, etc.)— se integran en un mismo sistema literario, regido en cada etapa por un determinado concepto del decoro literario, en el que la configuración dada a cualquiera de los elementos repercute sobre el resto . Según veremos, la evolución teórica e histórica del decoro no siempre contempla dos únicas modalidades genéricas, de modo que no contamos con restricciones teóricas para reconocer la rica mixtura de géneros fraguada en el teatro europeo de los ss. XVI y XVII. Tanto la dimensión estructural como pragmática de la obra literaria —situaciones y materias desarrolladas, registro estilístico y caracterización de los personajes, por un lado; e intención comunicativa, por otro— se ven condicionadas por la noción del decoro, que a su vez está sujeta a la tradición e innovaciones propias de todo producto estético.
Prosigamos entonces con el examen de las ideas sobre el decoro literario y su relación con el surgimiento del “tercer género” dramático. Sin salir de la escuela peripatética, fue Teofrasto quien, a juicio de algunos estudiosos, estableció por vez primera una distinción entre tres estilos (sencillo, pleno e intermedio), criterio más tarde difundido en la retórica latina, de la mano de la Rhetorica ad Herennium y el Orator de Cicerón. Pero, con independencia de la diferenciación entre dos o tres modalidades estilísticas, la separación de estilos fue respetada desde temprano por parte de numerosos tratadistas, como Longino en el Perí Hypsous o Tratado de lo sublime .
Dentro de la preceptiva latina, es obligado aludir a Ars poetica de Horacio. Según es sabido, sus reflexiones sobre el decoro se difundieron en España gracias a iniciativas como la edición y comentarios del Brocense y de Cascales. En términos generales, las opiniones de Horacio entroncan con la tradición , pero paralelamente legitimaron el cultivo de un estilo mixto, tanto en el plano teórico como en el literario .
Translation - English ABATRACT: This paper, which evaluates the theoretical underpinnings of tragicomedy, examines the ideas on literary decorum that formed the basis for the traditional definitions of the different dramatic genres. Within this context, an argument is made that the emergence of the ‘third genre’ was associated with changing views on the adaptation of theater to bring it into line with the concept of literary decorum. It is suggested that this concept gradually ceased to shape the sorts of characters associated with different genres and eventually came to determine only the style that was used, depending on the dramatic situation and social standing of the characters.

Reflection on the nature of tragedy and comedy dates back to a rather disturbing passage by Plato, used by the philosopher to close his famous dialogue on love. The morning after the symposium that gives the text its name, Aristodemus, who had overheard the conversations between Socrates and Agathon's other guests, awakes to observe that only the host, Aristophanes and Socrates remain awake, conversing and drinking from an enormous cup. Aristodemus cannot remember their words, as his fatigue prevented him from following the thread of their dialogue right from the beginning, but he does remember the last point that Socrates forces those he is engaged in discussion with to admit, ostensibly as a conclusion to the preceding arguments. In his view, playwrights are just as able to write comedy as they are tragedy. He who is a tragic poet by nature is also a comedic playwright. After this, the guests fall asleep and the text closes with the departure of Socrates, heading towards the Lyceum.
Despite the passage's vagueness, there is no shortage of authors for whom Socrates' words presuppose the existence of some principles common to both genres. "Clearly —argues Guthke (1966: 4)— Socrates must have pointed out certain principles, thematic, structural or other, that tragedy and comedy have in common". Furthermore, the same author points to an unbroken line of thinking that can be seen, for example, in the work of Thomas Mann, who stated that comedy and tragedy "grow on the same tree, and a change of lighting suffices to make one into the other" (51). Indeed, the character in the Symposium does not specifically state any one property common to both genres, but the very fact that two elements can be placed in opposition to each other implies that their nature is relational, i.e. they share characteristics that enable us to establish degrees of comparison. In this manner, the approach opens the doors to a potential theoretical justification of tragicomedy, a concept expounded on for the first time in Amphitryon by Plautus.
In any case, after Aristotle's Poetics the distinction between the comic and the tragic was based on a set of well-defined qualities. First and foremost, it rested on the standing of the characters: comedy is understood as "a mimesis of inferior persons" (Aristotle, Poetics, 1449a), as opposed to "a mimesis of an action —that is, it is [morally] serious and purposeful, having magnitude; uttered in heightened language […]" (Aristotle, Poetics, 1449b). There is thus a specific class of character associated with each genre and, in parallel, a stylistic diversity shaped by the individual dramatic situations . As regards the use of a specific style in each genre, Aristotle rooted his theoretical observations in descriptions of literary history, particularly the works closest to his era.
Aristotle's Poetics, therefore, is not only a treatise on literary precepts. Alongside the theoretical rules, the Stagarite sometimes adopts a historiographical stance, such as when he mentions the contributions of Aeschylus to the history of tragedy (Aristotle, Poetics, 1449a). Furthermore, it would be difficult to aspire to a higher degree of complexity and conceptual interdependence with other disciplines such as rhetoric or ethics. The most striking aspect of the treatise, however, is the solidity of its arguments. Aristotle is considered an authority as such, not only due to tradition but also because his theoretical system brooks no argument in regard to the Athenian theater on which he bases his thinking .
Along with the passages presented from Poetics, consideration should be given to how ideas on style are developed in Perì léxeōs, a treatise included in Rhetoric, whose author argues that stylistic register should be appropriate to the gravity of the subject matter, the communicative intent and the sociocultural characteristics of the speaker . More specifically, appropriateness entails "that we must neither speak casually about weighty matters, nor solemnly about trivial ones […]". Furthermore, "the language of disgust and discreet reluctance to utter a word when speaking of impiety or foulness; the language of exultation for a tale of glory, and that of humiliation for a tale of and so in all other cases", and finally, "If, then, a speaker uses the very words which are in keeping with a particular disposition, he will reproduce the corresponding character; for a rustic and an educated man will not say the same things nor speak in the same way" (1408a).
Before expounding any further, let us consider a basic theoretical issue. When concerning themselves with the characteristics of tragedy and comedy, some critics — I would cite the valuable contributions made by Vitse (1988: 308; and 1983)— give greater weight to the communicative intent and to the resulting effect on the spectator, i.e. the compassion or the detachment respectively triggered by tragedy and by comedy. In keeping with this view, Arellano (2011: 16) assigns a secondary value to other characteristics, such as the social standing of the characters, the stylistic register or the different types of dramatic incidents and how they are laid out in the plot. The opposition of the two dramatic genres would thus hinge on the presence or absence of a single quality, and whether a tragic involvement or a comic detachment was aroused in the spectator would determine which of the two we were dealing with. Given this duality, it is only logical to assume that this distinguishing criterion would preclude the acceptance of a third genre . Indeed, when assessed according to this parameter, the texts on which Arellano bases his study (limited to the works of Lope de Vega and Calderón) seem to reinforce this theoretical stance.
Nevertheless, in my view there are factors, both theoretical and historical/literary, which suggest we should broaden —not necessarily call into question— our approach to the issue. On one hand, from a factual viewpoint if we consider Spanish dramatic pieces from the 16th century and the mix of genre elements in other European countries, we find there are numerous literary essays that cannot be reduced to the specific cases represented in some of the works of Lope de Vega and Calderón .
On the other hand, as I attempt to show in this paper, all of the qualities that have been considered to differentiate the dramatic genres since the days of Aristotle —including the one given the most weight by some critics (the spectator’s involvement or detachment) and those that are supposedly secondary (types of characters, stylistic register, etc.)— are part of a single literary system, governed at all stages by a certain concept of literary decorum, wherein the way in which any one element is rendered has a bearing on the others . As we will see, the theoretical and historical evolution of decorum does not always involve two distinct genre types, and there are thus no theoretical restrictions preventing us from recognizing the rich blend of genres that arose in European theater in the 16th and 17th centuries. Both the structural and the pragmatic dimensions of literary works —the situations and subject matters rendered, the stylistic register and characterization, on one hand, and the communicative intent on the other— are shaped by the notion of decorum, which is itself shaped by the tradition and innovations characteristic of all esthetic products.
Let us go on, then, to evaluate the ideas on literary decorum and their relationship with the emergence of the ‘third dramatic genre’. Without straying from the Peripatetic school, it was Theophrastus who some scholars believe was the first to recognize a distinction between three styles (plain, grand and intermediate), a criterion which later filtered through to Latin rhetoric in Cicero's Rhetorica ad Herennium and Orator. However, regardless of the distinction between two or between three stylistic types, the separation of styles was respected from early times by numerous authors, such as Longinus in Peri Hypsous, or the Treatise on the Sublime.
Within the framework of Latin precepts, mention must be made of Horace's Ars Poetica. From what has been gathered, Horace's reflections on decorum spread to Spain via initiatives such as the editions and commentaries undertaken by El Brocense and Cascales. In general terms, Horace’s opinions align with tradition, but at the same time they rationalized the cultivation of a mixed style, on both the theoretical and the literary planes . In particular, his conception of Greek satire as a hybrid genre encompassing the qualities of tragedy and comedy set the precedent for reflections on tragicomedy by Italian authors of the 16th century (Guthke, 1966: 8).

Source text - Spanish Dice el historiador del arte Jonathan Brown que “pocos se atreverían a poner en duda que el Museo del Prado es el más importante del mundo en pintura europea”. En cualquier caso resulta incuestionable que tiene la mayor colección española de arte y en sus salas sorprende la interminable sucesión de obras maestras de Rafael, El Greco o Rubens.
Reyes y emperadores
Gran parte de los fondos del Museo del Prado provienen de la colección de pintura de los reyes de España, por lo que abundan los retratos de corte. Ejemplos sobresalientes son El emperador Carlos V a caballo en Mühlberg de Tiziano o los que Antonio Moro, Sánchez Coello y Sofonisba Anguissola hicieron para Felipe II y su familia. Pero las dos pinturas que mejor representan al museo son Las Meninas de Velázquez – una escena en la que la infanta Margarita, hija de Felipe IV, aparece acompañada por sus damas y bufones – y la Familia de Carlos IV de Goya. En ambas, los pintores fueron muy atrevidos e incumplieron una norma no escrita al inmortalizarse junto a los miembros de la Casa Real. De este modo Velázquez, reivindica su nobleza y la del arte de la pintura, y lo mismo hace Goya.
Mitos clásicos
La mitología grecorromana fue durante siglos la excusa perfecta que tenían los artistas para re-presentar desnudos. Las historias de dioses y héroes ofrecían la posibilidad de pintar escenas que de otra manera hubieran sido imposible tratar debido a la moral y al decoro. Son indudablemente eróticas las “poesías” de Tiziano – tal y como fueron llamadas en la época –, como La bacanal de los andrios, o muchas de las obras de Rubens, entre las que destacan
Las tres gracias, un cuadro que formó parte de sus bienes más queridos y para la que posó su segunda esposa, Helena Four-ment. También Velázquez trató numerosos temas mitológicos, pero no con la intención de excitar a los sentidos, sino como alegorías que reflexionan sobre el poder y la autoridad. Las hilanderas y Los borrachos estarían en esta línea.
Pinturas religiosas
Entre las pinturas religiosas del museo destacan por su calidad El descendimiento de Van der Weyden y La Anunciación de Fra Angelico, dos obras paradigmáti-cas del arte europeo del siglo XV, la primera realizada en Flandes y la segunda en Florencia. Un capítulo aparte son las salas dedicadas a la pintura veneciana, con ejemplos tan sobresalientes como El lavatorio de Tintoretto, y al arte español de los siglos XVI y XVII, donde pueden verse La Trinidad de El Greco, el Mar-tirio de San Felipe de Ribera, Santa Isabel de Portugal de Zurbarán o La Inmaculada de Murillo.
La historia en directo
Gracias a dos cuadros de Goya, Los fusilamientos y La lucha con los mamelucos, podemos revivir el levantamiento de los madrileños contra las tropas napoleónicas en mayo de 1808. Con estas pinturas el artista le dio un giro de 180º a la forma de comprender el género de historia, haciéndolo mucho más inmediato.
En las salas que el Museo del Prado dedica al siglo XIX se encuentran también algunos ejemplos posteriores, como el Fusilamiento de Torrijos y sus compañeros en las playas de Málaga de Antonio Gisbert Pérez.
Sueño y pesadilla
Entre las representaciones del Infierno y del Paraíso que se conservan en el museo son únicas las de El Jardín de las Delicias y El carro del Heno de El Bosco, debido no solo al preciosismo con el que están realizadas, sino también al universo onírico que despliegan. En esta misma línea se expli-ca el trabajo de otros pintores flamencos como Patinir o Brueghel el Viejo. Siglos después y en España, también Goya habló del horror y el miedo en las Pinturas negras que ocuparon las paredes de su casa, La Quinta del Sordo, y que hoy pueden verse colgadas en el Prado.
Translation - English Art historian Jonathan Brown has said that “few would dare doubt that the Prado is the most important museum in the world for European painting”. There is no question, in any event, that it boasts the largest collection of art in Spain and that its halls house an astonishing and seemingly endless succession of masterpieces by Raphael, El Greco and Rubens.
Monarchs and Emperors
A large portion of the Prado Museum’s holdings originate from the painting collections of Spain’s monarchs. Court portraits thus abound. Particularly outstanding works include Titian’s The Emperor Charles V at Mühlberg and the portraits painted by Anthonis Mor, Sánchez Coello and Sofonisba Anguissola for Philip II and his family. The museum’s two most iconic paintings, however, are The Maids of Honour by Velázquez –a scene that shows Princess Margaret, daughter to Philip IV, surrounded by her maids of honour and jesters– and The Family of Charles IV by Goya. In both works the painters showed exceptional boldness, breaking an unwritten rule by immortalising themselves alongside members of the Royal Family. By painting himself into the portrait, Velázquez asserts his own nobility as well as that of the art of painting, as does Goya.
Classical Myths
For centuries Greco-Roman mythology was the perfect excuse for artists to depict nude figures. Tales of gods and heroes made it possible to paint scenes that would otherwise have been precluded by morality and decorum. There is no question of the eroticism of Titian’s “poems” – as they were called at the time –, such as The Bacchanal of the Andrians, or of many of Rubens’ works, particularly The Three Graces, a painting that was among his most prized possessions and for which his second wife, Helena Fourment, posed. Velázquez also depicted multiple mythological themes, although his intent was not to arouse the senses but to offer allegories reflecting on power and authority. The Spinners and The Feast of Bacchus (aka The Triumph of Bacchus) are examples of this.
Religious Paintings
Of particular quality amongst the museum’s religious paintings are Rogier van der Weyden’s The Descent from the Cross and Fra Angelico’s The Annunciation, two prime examples of 15th century European art, the first produced in Flanders and the second in Florence. Worthy of special mention are the halls devoted to Venetian painting, which feature outstanding works such as Tintoretto’s The Washing of the Feet (aka Christ Washing His Disciples’ Feet), and to 16th and 17th century Spanish art, where El Greco’s The Holy Trinity, Ribera’s The Martyrdom of Saint Philip, Zurbarán’s Saint Elisabeth of Portugal and Murillo’s The Immaculate Conception are displayed.
A Window to the Past
Through two of Goya’s paintings, The Executions and The Fight Against the Mamelukes (aka The Charge of the Mamelukes), we can relive the rebellion of Madrid’s population against Napoleonic troops in May 1808. With these paintings, the artist turned the way the genre of history was understood on its head, giving it a much
greater immediacy. In the halls that the Prado devotes to the
19th century you can also find some later pieces, such as
The Execution of Torrijos and His Companions on the Beach
at Málaga by Antonio Gisbert Pérez.
Dreams and Nightmares
Amongst the depictions of Hell and Paradise housed by the museum, Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights and The Haywain Triptych are particularly unique, due not only to the extreme meticulousness with which they were painted but also to the dreamlike universe that they depict. Works by other Flemish painters, such as Patinir and Brueghel the Elder, show a similar style. Centuries later and in Spain, Goya also explored horror and fear in the Black Paintings that hung on the walls of his house, La Quinta del Sordo, which can now be viewed at the Prado.
