Missão
- Promover, constantemente, o treinamento dos docentes da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE) visando à melhoria da qualidade das atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão da Instituição e, assim, contribuir para a formação de recursos humanos qualificados; bem como para o desenvolvimento do Estado de Pernambuco, da Região Nordeste e do País;
- Promover a realização de pesquisas básicas e aplicadas relacionadas com as diversas áreas de conhecimento no âmbito da UFRPE, para atendimento das necessidades regionais e nacionais;
- Despertar a vocação científica e incentivar talentos entre estudantes de graduação, possibilitando a participação em projetos de pesquisa onde, orientados por pesquisadores qualificados, poderão aprimorar a aprendizagem de técnicas e métodos científicos e estimular o desenvolvimento da criatividade e do pensamento; e
- Promover a criação e consolidação de Programas e Cursos de Pós-graduação de excelência, nos níveis Stricto e Lato Sensu, que atendam aos anseios da sociedade; como também às peculiaridades do mercado de trabalho regional e nacional.
Histórico
Em 1974, a Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE) criou a Coordenadoria Geral de Pesquisa, que teve à frente o Professor Mário Coelho de Andrade Lima.
O novo Estatuto da UFRPE, aprovado por meio da Resolução 95/1975, datado de 8 de setembro de 1975, em sua alínea b, do Artigo 10, do Capítulo I, Administração Superior, relata o Conselho de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão (CEPE) como órgão de deliberação coletiva da Administração Superior; cuja composição envolve o Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação (alínea d, do Artigo 13, da Seção II).
Fica, portanto, criada a Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação (PRPPG) da UFRPE, cujas atividades iniciaram em 1976, sob a responsabilidade do Professor Mário Bezerra de Carvalho, que contou com a colaboração da servidora Maria José da Costa Negromente, como secretária.
Na década de 70, a UFRPE iniciou suas atividades de oferta de Curso de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu com a criação do Mestrado em Botânica (1973), por meio de Convênio firmado entre as UFRPE e Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), com funcionamento até 1975 na UFPE, sob a Coordenação dos Professores Dárdano de Andrade Lima (UFRPE) e Geraldo Mariz (UFPE).

- To constantly promote the training of educational professionals of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), aiming the improvement of the quality of activities related to education, research and extension of the Institution, contributing for the formation of qualified human resources, as well as the development of the State of Pernambuco, and the Northeast of the country;
- To promote the accomplishment of basic and applied researches related to several areas of knowledge at UFRPE, to fulfill national and regional needs;
- To awake scientific vocation, and encourage talents between students of graduation, enabling the participation in projects of research where, oriented by qualified researchers, they will be able to improve the learning of techniques and scientific approaches, and stimulate the development of creative thought.
-To promote the creation and consolidation of Programs and high quality Post Graduation Courses, Stricto and Lato Sensu, that may reach the expectations of the society, and also the peculiarities from the national and regional market.
History
In 1974, the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) created the General Research Coordination, having as its responsible, the Professor Mário Coelho de Andrade Lima.
The new Statute of the UFRPE, approved by the Resolution 95/1975, dated on September 8, 1975, in his paragraph b, of the Article 10, Chapter I , Upper Administration, relates the Counseling of Education, Research and Extension (CEPE) as the organ of collective deliberation of the Superior Administration, whose composition involves the Pro-Rector of Research and Post Graduation (paragraph d, of the Article 13, Section II).
This way, the Pro-Rector Officer for Research and Post-Graduation (PRPPG) is created, the first activities happening in 1976, under the responsibility of the Professor Mário Bezerra de Carvalho, with the collaboration of the server Maria José da Costa Negromente, as his secretary.
In the ´70s, UFRPE started offering Stricto Sensu Post Graduation Course with the creation of the Master´s in Botany (1973), through the partnership between UFRPE and the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), with operation until 1975 at UFPE, under the Coordination of the Professors Dárdano de Andrade Lima (UFRPE) and Geraldo Mariz (UFPE).
Subsequently, with the end of the partnership, the Master´s in Botany took place temporarily in the Building Otávio Gomes, until the beginning of 1977, when it was transferred to its own building named "Dárdano of Andrade Lima", belonging to the Department of Biology of the UFRPE.
The first Dissertation Defense that happened at the course and, therefore, at UFRPE, was professor Enide Eskinazi Leça´s one, on December 21,1976, oriented by the Professor Geraldo Mariz.

Quero agradecer em primeiro lugar pelo convite, pela oportunidade, que me honra, na pessoa de Andrei Grachev, uma vez que o Presidente Mikhail Gorbachev não pôde estar conosco. Eu venho do Brasil, da América Latina, portanto vou falar como brasileiro e como latino-americano. Eu vou falar como um dos sobreviventes da geração de 68, porque demarca bem a diferença de ponto de vista de leitura do mundo com relação à Europa, e particularmente com relação à Rússia e à Europa do Leste. Por que eu digo isso? A minha geração estava ao lado do povo checo contra a invasão das tropas do Pacto do Vársovia, mas ela estava também depois com o Solidariedade, apoiando o Solidariedade na Polônia. Eu militei no Partido Comunista Brasileiro, rompi com o Partido Comunista Brasileiro. Nós não temos contas a prestar com relação às ditaduras, pelo contrário, nós passamos as vidas nos porões das ditaduras, nas câmaras de tortura, pegando em armas para enfrentar as ditaduras, dando a única coisa que nós tínhamos, que era a vida. Mas quem sustentava essas ditaduras, quem as apoiava? Quem treinava os torturadores, quem abastecia as ditaduras de armas e de recursos? Os Estados Unidos, o país-símbolo e exemplo de liberdade para os que estão aqui hoje e que viveram sobre o regime soviético, na Europa do Leste ou na própria Rússia, ou na ex-União Soviética. Portanto é importante ter mais de um olhar sobre os mundos e sobre os Estados Unidos. Digo isso a partir de um partido, de um governo que tem excelentes relações com as administrações e com os governos norte-americanos. O Brasil tem um longo contencioso com os Estados Unidos, mas tem uma determinação de uma política de cooperação. Não digo isso para agravar, e sim para construir pontes.

First of all, I would like to thank you for the invitation, and for the opportunity offered by Andrei Grachev, since the President Mikhail Gorbachev could not be here today.
I am from Brazil, Latin America, so I will speak as a Brazilian and Latin American. I will speak as one of the survivors of the 68 generation, because these factors can explain a different point of view of Europe, and particularly, Russia and Eastern Europe.But what do I mean by that? My generation was alongside with the Czech people against the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops, but it was also later with Solidarity, supporting it in Poland. I militated for the Brazilian Communist Party, and later I broke up with it. We do not owe anything to any dictatorships, on the opposite, we spent part of our lives in dictatorship basements, torture chambers, holding guns to face it, giving the only thing that was left for us- our lives. But who was supporting these dictatorships? Who was trainning the torturers, who was supplying it with guns and several resources? The United States, a country considered a symbol and model of liberty by the ones who are here today, and who lived under the Sovietic regime, in Eastern Europe, Russia or ex- Soviet Union. So, it is important to look at the world and the United States in some other ways. I say that coming from a party, a government maintains good relations with North American administrations and governments. Brazil has a contentious relation with the United States, but it also has the will of keeping cooperative policies. And I do not say that in order to generate hostility- I say that in order to bridge gaps.
