Both, actually Feb 27, 2008

I missed the option 'Both'.
I mainly use a desktop PC, though.
My laptop comes in handy when traveling or as a back-up machine.

Same here. Laptop also to change scenery - for example work in the living room for a while

Desktop Feb 27, 2008

But soon switching to a laptop that will serve as desktop replacement no matter where I happen to be working.

(tired of changing back and forth between different computers with different settings in different locations)

Tablet Feb 27, 2008

It could be interesting if there was option "tablet" I am thinking about buying one - I am curious how many translators use tablets in everyday work.

Cheers

Both Feb 27, 2008

At home it is more convenient to work at a fast machine with a big screen, but I take advantage of the laptop's mobility as well.

My laptop never ever left the house Feb 27, 2008

I work a lot during late hours, mostly due to bizarre timezones. To avoid waking up my husband at night (e.g., the desk chair rolling on the hardwood floor in my office), I got a laptop.

Now I can work in the living room as well, night shifts are less lonely with the TV running on low volume, and everybody is happy.

Literally everything is wireless, however, I do miss the ergonomic and extended keyboard at times.

Desktop + a lot of screen :-) Feb 27, 2008

I use desktop PC and two monitors, which sometimes happen to be not enough I simply cannot imagine working on one tiny screen. I used to do that but since I bought two LCDs (one with pivot) whenever I start working on a laptop I find it difficult to manage all the windows which I open simultanously. I waste then too much time clicking between them or suffer from not seeing the whole page on the screen.

Even laptops can have large screens Feb 27, 2008

1. Buy an over-sized one (which is why I would never ever think of carrying this thing around)
2. Use a second flat screen
3. Manage your screen with tabs

Please - I say PLEASE - again, can someone edit or moderate these polls. They do not make any sense any more.

Desktop all the way Feb 27, 2008

As a big man, I need a lot of space and sturdy equipment. I like to have books and other accessories spread out over a desk. Also there is something about being seated in a big, adjustable office chair that tells the body and mind that it is time to work. I would have a hard time working sprawled on the floor or on a flimsy lawn chair.

Laptop Feb 27, 2008

I used a PC desktop right up until the end of last year, when I made the big switch to Mac. I've never been so happy! I LOVE my Mac laptop, and since I'm in a phase of transition because I moved from Brazil to the USA last November and have been living with different relatives, it's very convenient to be able to take the laptop and work anywhere. I'm actually enjoying not having an office, at least for now, and do all my work sitting on a bed!

Also, it's so great not to have to deal

Also, it's so great not to have to deal with Windows, viruses, that horrid little hourglass popping up all the time and all the other myriad problems that I've had with PCs. Mac rules!

Oh, and for the person who complained about the poll I say: change the channel if you don't like what's on!

What about the option... Feb 27, 2008

...both

That's what the poster/editor/moderator is supposed to add to make this poll complete.

That's all I wanted to say, Amy!

Convertible laptop / Tablet Feb 27, 2008

I have seen an answer asking that how many people would use tablet for work. Counted me in the list. I have just got a convertible tablet in the replacement of my laptop a month ago.

Tablet is very handy, it is very light and easy to write English, but not Thai. So it is very convinience for Thai to English but not really English to Thai. it is not recognised my Thai hand writting. But it is only a downside. It works fine with my other jobs e.g. lecturing, writting, as well as for my business too. At the end of the day, I give it 8 out of 10 for my its utilities.
