  • Dear members,

I am very happy to announce the Third ProZ.com Translation Contest!

This contest is again about having fun, participating together in a challenging activity, and learning from each other, while promoting and recognizing excellence in the art of translation.

You will notice some changes with respect to the last contest:

  • This time the number of source texts has increased, and their style, length, topic and tone have completely changed to reinforce the idea of having fun.

  • The texts will also have a friendly printer version provided for translation.

  • It will be possible to participate in pairs. Just add your colleague's ID, user name or full name on the space provided in the submission page!

  • The winners will receive a ProZ.com suitcase, a printable digital diploma and an icon in their profile if they so choose.

    Some things have been unchanged:

  • As before, participation in the contest is limited to (paying) members (students, freelance full and partial community). For the qualification and voting it will be also required to count the language pair among the “working” or “interest” language pairs. Site moderators are free to participate, as they have no privileges in the contest.

  • All translations must be original works. Reuse of existing (published) translations, in whole or in part, is prohibited. No parallel contests (translation contests with the same source text) will be permitted.

  • The contest will be divided in three phases as in the previous one:

    • Submission: The target texts are presented and members are given the opportunity to post their translations into any language(s) of their preference. During this phase the entries will be visible only to their posters. Entries can be submitted as late as 3pm (GMT) on June 26th, 2007.

    • Qualification: In this phase all entries in pairs that received more than 6 contributions will be made visible but hiding the identity of the posters. Members will be able to give a positive or negative qualification to each translation. Depending on the feedback received entries will be qualified or disqualified. As soon as an entry achieves one of these status it will disappear from the qualification page. Submission will still be possible in pairs that had up to 6 entries at the start of this phase.

    • Voting: All the qualified entries in language pairs with a minimum of 3 qualified entries will be shown, still hiding the posters' names, and members will be allowed to select a first, second and third choice (assigning 4, 2 and 1 points respectively) and to post comments on the entries.

  • No comments about the submitted entries will be allowed during the qualification and voting phases.

  • After the submission phase, and again after qualification, for language pairs with not enough entries for voting, posters will be given three options to: (1) Publish their entries and accept feedback from colleagues (2) Publish their entries but do not accept feedback from colleagues (3) Do not publish their entries.

  • At the end of the voting phase the winners will be announced and the names of the posters will be made visible (except for those who opted for hiding their names if not winning). Besides, room will be provided for feedback and comments on the entries, reinforcing the idea of learning from the other colleagues.

Please visit the contest page or select Community -> Contest at the top drop down menu.

Thanks again for all your support!

    Kind regards,
    Florencia ▲ Collapse

    Yay! Jun 13, 2007

I loved the idea of ProZ.com contests from the start and I'm really happy it caught on. Unfortunately I was too busy to participate in the previous two, but this time, get ready people, here I come!

    Hi Florencia,

I like this - already the 3rd contest running!
Personally, I took part the 1st time, liked it a lot, but experienced a big lack from my part: literary translation, that's not really my strong part (after all, I am all the time doing technical translations). So one direct consequence of this course was...: I decided to engage in a translation course where we are all the time translating authors! Hi Florencia,

Personally, I took part the 1st time, liked it a lot, but experienced a big lack from my part: literary translation, that's not really my strong part (after all, I am all the time doing technical translations). So one direct consequence of this course was...: I decided to engage in a translation course where we are all the time translating authors! Now I have started to understand what it means to really be flexible and sensible with the language you use. You see: the contest had a happy result for me!
And regarding this community - in any case, first times are always first times. And this first time, we were all "cutting our teeth" regarding contests. The text was demanding, defying with its expressions, full of literary contents. It was good so!

This time you tell about "texts which have more to do with having fun". This sounds good. A contest like this must be, after all, an opportunity to engage people. And also an opportunity for us, ModZ, to be able to stimulate and advice people who could possibly take part.
You already have a hard task organizing all this. But then there are other contact channels with the ProZians which go through all the persons who, this way or the other, are involved in the growth of the community. Growth doesn't mean just "making the numbers grow", but "making the quality of our constructive, lively, real-time relationships grow".

So, Florencia, once again: I know that you are always ready to help us - so feel free to ask us for help too!

Hope that this contest is a HUGE success!!!

    Greetings from "the neighboring shore",
    Fabio

    And I was not Jun 14, 2007

I was busy, but I participated in the first contest. However, in my ENG-GEO pair there was only one translation and according to the rules, that was disqualified. Since then, I decided to take care of my time.

You will have another chance this time Jun 14, 2007

    Dear Levan,

I invite you once again to try your hand and participate in this Thrid ProZ.com Translation Contest.
Probabilities are that you will have your entry receiving votes in your language pair this time.
If by chance your language pair does not have enough entries then this time you will have another option to profit from the contest as well.

    I see Jun 14, 2007

    Dear Florencia,

Thank you for your kind clarification. However, despite those three great options (which shall, in my judgment, rather apply to students) I would refrain from participation at this time.

    Thank you again.

    Kind regards,
    Levan

all participants should be rewarded Jun 18, 2007

This is not a test translation, this is fun.

If so, than the role of those making it fun should be acknowledged in some way no matter if they win or they don't win, or even if their entry was the only one there...

Now, I am telling all this because, as I can see, my contest translation is about to have the same fate as Levan's, so Florencia, if you don't want to lose another participant in coming contest

    Ahhh! Jun 18, 2007

Wow, this sounds soooo interesting! And sadly, it seems I won't be able to participate as I can't afford a paid membership yet and, from what I understood, the contest is only to paying members... T_T

Anyway, keep up the good work everyone! Hopefully someday I'll be able to participate in these interesting events. :_)

    Fun - yes :-) Jun 19, 2007

But there is a problem with the languages with very few participants.
Seems the Scandinavian languages are suffering the same fate. Lots of entries in the larger languages, for the small ones one or two.
I hope to see more - as Miroslav said - this is not a test, it's fun. The texts are short, should not take up too much valuable time

Neither will I. The same reason. Unfortunately.

    Great idea! Jun 26, 2007

Dear Florencia, this is my first time participating in this contest. I enjoyed translating the text because it's fun and it's about communication, which is such an important skill. I look forward to the results and exchanges!

    What about a banner-reminder? Jun 26, 2007

These are the last moments to take part, and in many languages there is one translation missing from the critical three.

If possible, could you put a reminder banner on the front page, so that we could have some more entries today?

In any case, thanks for arranging this contest!

A banner is up now Jun 26, 2007

    Dear Jussi,

A banner is up now announcing the last day.
There are some new arragements which will be announced shortly. These changes will give more chance to the language pairs in which the number of entries is too low to qualify for the voting phase.

    Kind regards,
    Florencia

As I see, my translation RUS-HUN is alone((

I enjoyed translating the text because Cheburashka reminded me of my youth: he was one of the first toys of my first son. He is 18 now...
