Hi Alexandra,
Your hectic flying-bee avatar might have been amusing at first, but has become so irritating, to me at least.
But maybe others still like it.
Ist freundlich gemeint.

To make life easier for you poor, stressed out, grumpy old ***, I will leave this forum and leave ProZ as soon as I have used up my quotes.

I'm wondering why we all need to know about this.

Don't leave on account of one person Nov 29, 2019

I got a similar snarky email from a Proz member a while back about some other issue. That email made a strange, high-speed whistling noise as it made its way to my trash can. If someone writes an email like that, they have other issues going on. Just ignore them, and thank your lucky stars that you are not so frustrated you have to take your repressed anger out on someone with a cheerful avatar.

Enjoy your day, because he probably isn't enjoying his.

Thank you, Fiona, for your kind reply. I'm sorry to hear that you received a similar email. Is it just me, or are men becoming increasingly fed up with competition from women? (I wish I were a man...)

I posted this email for everyone to see because that's where it belongs. The avatar is in the public sphere for all to see (and suffer), so everyone has a right to join in the discussion of this apparently oh-so-important issue. (If it is such. If it's just the one person being upset, then he shouldn't have written at all. I could consider it a discriminatory action because the avatar is on a lot of fora and part of my 'corporate identity', if you like. It's called Wilbee and represents the company, not the person. When I write as Alexandra, I use a photograph. But I am in some fora as a company representative and acting as such. Hence the avatar.) But if you have any more questions (or suggestions), feel free to contact me via private email. Just don't pretend -- like that guy did -- to be all-important and speaking for everyone.)

Thanks, folks, and this is the end of the matter.

I would like to say only two things.

1) Don't let this guy ruin your day, your personal profile is not his business.

2) Don't wish you were a man, don't let a bunch of insecure and childish guys affect you. I assure many of us are happy to work with women.

Well, I guess it was only that I had to say.

My advice: at all costs, avoid fame Nov 29, 2019

You seem to be terribly hurt by someone saying he doesn't like something you use. It seems rather tongue in cheek to me actually, and certainly not about you as a woman. I can understand you being irritated, calling him names under your breath, and clicking delete with some venom, mind you. It would certainly have been better left unsaid.

I've known two famous people quite well and I really don't envy them their fame. Both have to put up with constant criticisms, both in public and

I've known two famous people quite well and I really don't envy them their fame. Both have to put up with constant criticisms, both in public and private, and often very hurtful ones, being derogatory about their looks, their personality, their views... If they were to let each one get under their skin they'd be in serious mental trouble in weeks.

Edward Lear's opinion of celebrity Nov 29, 2019

A goddess capricious is Fame.
You may strive to make noted your name,
But she either neglects you
Or coolly selects you
For laurels distinct from your aim!

Don't let the troll win..... Nov 29, 2019

Dear Alexandra,

at first I was a bit horrified about the mail you received.

But some minutes later I would like to add two personal observations - besides the fact that I like your logo.

1.) Some individuals are getting more and more"toxic". They are searching the next available person and opportunity to "let off steam" just for the sake of humiliating someone.

This kind of communications doesn't have any entropy or measurable content. And it is not your fault or you have nothing false to become the "target" of that.

If you just delete the mail and don't give feedback the troll will soon starve. He will get no feedback on his search and mail activity and may get back on track.

And you are not alone if you see this behavior: In Germany nearly all professions with customer or citizen contact report similar incidents.

Even paramedics or firemen are under attack:

https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/polizei-justiz/feuerwehrmaenner-bespuckt-und-getreten-angriff-auf-einsatzkraefte-in-berlin-charlottenburg/24263370.html
Source: Tagesspiegel, Newspaper from the German capital, Berlin.

Not "only" verbally but with physical violence.

2.) You can rethink of all positive energy and emotion you have. And that you are not on the "dark side" of communication.

And if you decide that the troll does not have any influence on you you will be stronger and stronger.

To summarize it: This incident will make you stronger - in the long run.

Shedding light on this incident is one great way to handle that kind of situations. Not being the silent victim, but to inform your vicinity or colleagues.

No need to worry.

Best regards

Gerd

I, too, often find such animations irritating. But... if you set your browser to play animations (or deliberately choose to use a browser in which animations can't be disabled), then you only have yourself to blame.

loop animations once

FYI, it's possible to block moving avatars with Adblock Plus (which I do, because I happen to find them irritating on text pages, too).
