Cheque writing skills

I do a bit of copywriting and I think I do it well, but I find it incredibly hard work. It's like the opposite of translation. Sitting there with a clean slate and making your own decisions about content and structure can be quite overwhelming sometimes. It's so much easier to be spoon-fed by someone else. But then again at least you get ownership. Presumably if I did more I'd get faster, but for now I do it for the satisfaction, not for the money.

Still think I should've made millions from my slogan for a novel adhesive-based alternative to staples: All gum and no teeth. Sadly the product nosedived.

I already work with web content and copywriting, though I would like to delve deeper and take a course on Adwords snd SEO to compliment that.

Copywriting Oct 4, 2016

As part of their technical translation class (2013-2014), my students were asked to provide a writing assignment (a description of a holiday they spent somewhere, or a description of a piece of architecture, such as a bridge). No translation, just pure writing by the seat of your pants.

Few took this assignment seriously, and few produced good writing samples. And these were half working translators and half translation students.

I've done some ad writing and I enjoyed it. As long as the client brief is specific and clear, writing about a product or service is exciting.

And since I'm studying translation theories and linguistics this semester, I might say that skopos theory (look it up) applies wonderfully to copywriting.
