I've got a file with several dozen pages of text (which I've translated) and several dozen pages of charts. The file is in the docx format (MS Word).

Trados lets me edit all the text-based legends to these numerous charts, but fails to save the document. I managed only to make it save the document when I translate it as .doc (Word2003), which fuses all the text legends with the charts as graphic files (untranslatable).

Is there a CAT tool besides Trados that can "see" and let me edit the text legends to the charts in the .docx format? I've tried OmegaT and WordFast 4 Pro - they do not see the text in the charts, so out of hundreds of text items I only get 10: those that are not present in the charts.

I have been successful translating docx files with charts using OmegaT. So, the question is: how were charts in your files produced?

I don't know the exact way they were produced. Most likely, ported from an XLS document, which I lack. But the textual legends are there, and alas, only Trados and MemSource are able to edit them, and still not every bit of the text: the descriptions of the data charts remain "unseen", only the name of the chart and the names of the axes are editable.

I managed to get the xml files from out the docx file (since it's an archived file, you can get all the files constituting it by renaming it as an archive and unzipping). However, they contain a lot of technical data besides the text, so in the end I just manually translated all in MS Word.

Did you check all the options in OmegaT's filter? Aug 20, 2016

In OmegaT, the Microsoft Open XML filter has a number of related options. Did you check all of them?
Options > File Filters > Microsoft Open XML > Options > Charts, Diagrams, Drawings, WordArt.
