Just downloaded OT 2.6.3 update 11 and tried to go through the New Project procedure in the instructions. It doesn't work - I tried to persuade OT to accept a Word file for the project but it insisted my project folder was empty. It also said I could choose languages at the top in the dialogue - but there wasn't any dialogue. Only a New Project screen with a list of folders on the chosen hard disc (D in my case) and choices such as Eigene Dokumente on the left. Something very wrong somewhere - b... Sounds to me like you're using a Microsoft proprietary .doc file. OmegaT doesn't support those, as the user's manual explains. You can save it as an .odt via LibreOffice or OpenOffice, or you can save it as .docx.
Why are you using such an old version of OmegaT? We're now at 3.1.7. Version 2.6.3 was back in the Stone Age!
If my suggestion doesn't work, ask your questions on the OmegaT Yahoo group, which gets more traffic than this site.

That’s not exactly true. The 2.6.3 branch is still under development, the latest release being 2.6.3_11 released in August 2014. However, switching to the 3.1 branch is good advise.
As for the problems mentioned, follow Susan’s advise. Try manually copying source files to the respective directory (as set in the project properties dialog). Note that the project languages can be changed anytime via that dialog (hit Ctrl+E to call up). If you don’t see the respective fields, probably, you need to adjust the dialog position on the screen.

When you use Project > New, you are presented with a folder selector.
In that selector, you are supposed to enter a folder name for the new project you want to create.

When you use Project > New, you'll get a dialog with which to create a folder. Type a name for your project (it will become the name of the folder). Then, you will see a dialog asking for the source/target languages. After that, you will be asked to "import" your Word file into the project (which will copy the Word file into the /source/ subfolder of the project folder... or you can simply copy the file into that subfolder yourself).

I'm not sure what happens in version 2.6.3, but in version 3.1.7 the project creation dialog is a bit confusing (on Windows 7, at least). The user is assumed to be familiar with the MS DOS directory tree syntax, which means that the project name should be typed as a name preceded by a backslash (in turn preceded by the full path of the folder). Fortunately, if you navigate to the appropriate top-level folder using that dialog, you can simply empty the "Folder name" field entirely and simply type your project name in it, as-is, without any directory tree information.
