Red and sore eyes

I was just made aware that my eyes are excessively red. I have been noticing some red during the past weeks, but nothing really excessive. They are sore as well, maybe a little bit painful.

I can't wait to get some rest, but I still have work to do.

I'm wondering if there are others who have had similar problems and have found solutions, cures, remedies etc.

Computer glasses Jul 19, 2013

I too, had this problem. I bought a pair of computer glasses - they are tinted yellow and have a bit of magnification. I wasn't sure if they weren't snake oil, they are sold for gamers and other people that stare onto screens for too long, but I find that they make a huge difference for me. I am using them for about three months now and my eyes are never read anymore.

Progressive lenses Jul 19, 2013

If you're near sighted and wear glasses, then get the office lenses / computer progressive lenses or whatever they are called in the optometrist office. Point is that if you look through the upper part of the lens (e.g. while looking far) they are strong, and when you look at the lower part of the lens (e.g. while reading or working behind the computer) they are weaker and don't strain the eyes that much. The lens gets progressively weaker from top to bottom. It made a huge difference for me.... See more

And I agree with Anna for yellow tinted computer glasses if the red eyes are not caused by near sightedness.

Take a 5 min pause from screen every hour and make sure the room is well lit and not too dark when compared to the computer screen. It makes a huge difference.

Eye drops Jul 19, 2013

My pharmacist told me to blink more often).

You can use some anti-inflammatory eye drops for a few days and when your eyes are not that red anymore, you can use a lubricating or tear-replacing solution you can buy in any pharmacy.

I hope it helps!

Fortunately I haven't had such a problem but Jul 19, 2013

I known that applying tea (black tea) compresses really helps. The compress has to be lukewarm, some kind of clean cloth soaked in medium strength black tea and kept on closed eyelids for about 10 minutes. I have heard about some people applying lukewarm tea bags straight to their eyes. Whatever you prefer. It apparently works really well.

I have sicca (causing from sjogren) i am using teardrops (name is Refresh and Restasis) for 10 years. I diagnosed 10 years ago. My complaint always has been diagnosed as conjuctivitis and it wasn't treated with conjunctivitis treatments. At the end, i learned that i am sjogren.
You should go an Eye doctor and you should take an eye dryness test. It is very easy, doctor would insert a small paper into your eye and wait 1 minute and say the result. Especially Restasis rescued my life. I am fine with these drops even high workload.

I hope you recover soon.

take regular breaks Jul 20, 2013

Hi Mark

I had eye problems from last December until March due to an autoimmune disease. My eyes were hurting all the time, it drove me crazy. The only thing that really helped was taking regular breaks and really stick to it. I would work 30-45 minutes and then rest, with my eyes closed, for 15-20 minutes. Use a timer and be strict.
Also, I use f.lux for a better screen colour, but I've been using that for years.

I would recommend seeing an ophthalmologist to get to the bottom of this, instead of trying to alleviate the symptoms without knowing the cause. The specialist could also prescribe you the right eye drops.

All the best and hang in there.

Too much concentrated work? Jul 20, 2013

Is it possible you zombied it just a little too hard? Like an all-nighter or two or a string of 12-hour days?

TOPIC STARTER
Thanks to all who contributed with excellent tips! Jul 22, 2013

I took the following measures:

* Better room lighting compared to the computer screen = Does make a huge difference!

* Reading glasses (I don't need progressives because I'm not that nearsighted) with +1.0 (which I think would be even better to increase to +2.0) = My eyes feel more "relaxed" somehow, as if pressure and strain is taken off...

* Strict regular pauses = Extremely helpful!

* Increased blinking rate = Extremely helpful!

* f.lux downloaded and installed = Makes a huge difference and I will surely continue using this software, many thanks to Maaike!

Doing the above was sufficient to saved me. I'll try with the tea bags on another occasion, although I hope there won't be one.

I've seen and tried on the "computer glasses" only to find it impossible to figure out what they were supposed to be good for, but I'm willing to give them another chance if I come across them again.

My sympathy and compassion goes out to those of you who have or have had inflammations and diseases. I really hope it's not because of anything like that but I have been having health problems recently.

If anyone has something to add, please go ahead!

Best/
Mark
