Dear MemoQ users,

As with Intelliwebsearch (Windows 1252 and UTF-8) the new Websearch feature of MQ has problems with diacritical characters and apostrophes. Übersicht becomes ÃŒbersicht, l'enfant becomes l‘enfant.

When copying the same content directly into the Linguee Website everything ist OK. Is this a Linguee or an MemoQ (and IWS) issue?

Thanks in advance for any hints

Noe

Linguee in MemoQ? Jun 29, 2013

I don't know if I got this right, but do you have Linguee integrated with MemoQ?
I use MemoQ 6.2 and didn't know about this feature, which seems great.

It's in the new 'Web Search' feature that was just added to 'memoQ 2013' (AKA 6.5).

See: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2013/help-en/index.html?memoq_help_title_page.html

Websearch feature Jun 29, 2013

Hi Gabriela,

as Michael already mentioned it's included in the new version of MemoQ (2013). If you have a running support contract, you should be eligible for a free upgrade.

Then you can search with one shortcut a number of predefined websearches as Linguee, IATE, etc.

OK on my side Jun 29, 2013

Hi Noe,

The web search looks OK on my side after adding linguee and other favorite online research and reference sites.
Perhaps you need to refresh or add it again as a 'new' web site.
HTH.

a fix was made Jul 1, 2013

Hi Noe,

I don't know if it made it into the current public build or will make it into the next one, but I remember that we made a fix to this encoding behaviour, so please report back after the next release, in about two weeks' time.

Thanks
István

a reason to switch Jul 1, 2013

Hi István,

That's good news. Currently I still use IWS for my web searches, also because Chrome is much faster than IE. An encoding fix would be a reason to switch.

I don't want to keep harping on about this but unless something is changed the new 'Web Search' feature in memoQ 2013 isn't going to be of much use. Its Internet Explorer engine simply isn't up to the task of dealing with more than 2-3 search sites at the same time.

Unless we are given, either (1) the option of having Web Search trigger an external instance of Chrome, or (2) the built in browser is changed so it uses a faster rendering engine (Chrome, or an open source fork of Chromium) ... Web Search is going to remain crippled at birth.

memoQ Web Search (Ctrl+F3)

OK, here is my first observation about the beta, and as usual mine relates to
scalability. Whether or not I start using the new websearch will depend on if it
can perform better than my current IntelliWebSearch setup.

So, this is what I did so far.

At the moment I have 25 search tabs set up to open in Chrome via IWS. If I am in
memoQ and select a word and click Alt+I, it takes 10 seconds for all the tabs to
be fully opened in Chrome, and 20 seconds until all tabs are completely loaded.

And here is what happened when I selected a word and clicked Ctrl+F3 (the Web
Search shortcut).

1. It took 1:51 minutes (!!!) before all my 25 tabs were completely loaded and I
could more or less comfortably access the UI. However, I say 'more or less'
because the UI is sluggish and non-responsive. It's just about bearable but IWS
in Chrome is a WAAAAAAY more pleasant experience.
2. After I close the search windows, memoQ 2013 crashed.

PS: it seems to work OK, with one or two tabs, but that is not really much use
to me.

So my question is (although I know someone from Kilgray is going to say it isn't
possible because we HAVE to use Internet Explorer, for some technical reason):
can we have a setting to choose our own browser to display these searches,
PLEASE?

Unrealistic expectations Jul 1, 2013

If you have a reasonable amount of RAM and a decent internet connection, the threshold is much more than 2-3 engines, this is quite exaggerated IMO. I would say more than 9-ish.

Most people clearly won't use more than ~10-ish engines, so saying that Web search is "crippled at birth" is an overstatement that will not apply to 99% of translators.

After all, it shouldn't be such a huge surprise that it slows-down a bit with that many engines setup (25 ?!!)... It sounds to me like unrealistic expectations. Even Chrome in real situation would not open 25 tabs instantaneously on most PC/connections.

I just tested IntelliWebSearch, which I currently have set to use Torch (a freeware Chromium based web browser) and I am able to launch 25 sites in no time. Just as fast as Chrome.

I know that many people won't be using that many search sites but to release a brand new web search tool in memoQ that does not scale seems to be crippling the feature at birth. Furthermore, even if you only need 9 tabs, I just tested Web Search with only 9 sites but not only is the window unresponsive, navigating the tabs is also not nearly as functional as in Torch/Chrome because none of the standard shortcuts work anymore (Ctrl+Tab to move from tab to tab and Ctrl+W to close a window after I am finished with it).

I repeat, Torch/Chrome: '10 seconds for all the tabs to be fully opened in Chrome, and 20 seconds until all tabs are completely loaded'.

I think I will stick to IWS + Torch myself.

Michael

PS: I have 16GB of RAM and a very fast internet connection.

IWS + Chromium-based browser + huge PC + Fibre optic

I realise that such a setup would give better results and functionalities, that's not something I call into question.

However, I was merely replying to the sweeping statements of your initial post:

The fact is: it will be useful for all the non-techy translators who wouldn't know how to setup and use IWS, who work on a crappy laptop with an average connection and who aren't planning to use 500 engines at the same time (i.e. the overwhelming majority of translators).

Blaming Kilgray for unrealistic expectations is quite unfair IMO.

Fair enough. I see your point.

However, I am not really addressing 'all the non-techy translators who wouldn't know how to setup and use IWS, who work on a crappy laptop with an average connection and who aren't planning to use 500 engines at the same time', I am addressing Kilgray. And the point of all this shouting is to get the new Web Search feature (which I was really looking forward to but cannot use in its current state) improved. I have tons of great settings in IntelliWebSearch (IWS) for my language pair (Dutch>English) and was hoping to share them all with my fellow memoQ users for use in the new Web Search interface but don't really feel that inclined anymore since I won't be able to use it myself.

What I want to know from Kilgray is if there is a technical reason why they have to use IE in Web Search, or if it is a choice that they made (which can be unmade).

Lingee websearch Feb 15, 2015

I would dearly like to know if it possible to websearch to Linguee from memoQ and to arrive at the site clean of banner advertisements. Some of these contain (in my view potentially dangerous) "download" buttons. I have also noticed that the more I use this websearch, the more the banner ads are localised to the area where I live. This is in soite of the fact that I do not actually use IE (Firefox instead) and nvere save cookies after closing my browser.
Odeas anyone?
