Some time ago I have calculated this quantity. It is approximately 50 per year. Well... what to say I'm crazy about reading books! | | | Sarah Brodacz Local time: 08:53 Member (2010) English to German + ... Very much more... | Jan 20, 2013 |
I have always loved reading books. During my translation studies, I read less books than before because I needed a break from reading since we had to read a lot for the university. In fact, translating is inextricably linked with reading. However, since I started working as a translator, first in a translation office, then as a freelancer, I enjoy fixed working times and enjoy reading in my leisure time. What I read? However, since I started working as a translator, first in a translation office, then as a freelancer, I enjoy fixed working times and enjoy reading in my leisure time. What I read? Well, all kinds of books. Novels, thrillers, biographies... And I read in my mother tongue (German) as well as in my other languages although I admit that most of the books I read are in German. To name a figure: This year, I already finished three books and there are two I read at the moment. So I should definitively exceed the mark of 12 this year ▲ Collapse | | | Sitiens (X) Sweden Local time: 08:53 English to Swedish + ... Plenty of books | Jan 20, 2013 |
Almost exactly what Sarah said, except I am Swedish! I graduated last year and have been in a long-term reading rut due to all course literature. Right before new year's eve I visited the library and made sure to borrow some books, and I'm now finishing a book every week or every other week. Genres include fantasy, classics, mythology (Gilgamesh annotated by Lennart Warring was a fantastic experience from a translator's perspective) and some more. I've also gone back to... Never kept track | Jan 20, 2013 |
Already halfway through book #5 this year - I love reading! It's the best way I have found to relax after a long day. | | | Extremely variable | Jan 20, 2013 |
it depends mainly on what my favourite authors publish: Siri Hustvedt, Paul Auster, Douglas Kennedy, António Lobo Antunes, Michel Houellebecq, Amélie Nothomb... | | | Theo Bernards (X) France Local time: 08:53 English to Dutch + ... Much more than 12, for sure | Jan 20, 2013 |
, I am an avid reader and I read & watch DVDs (when I am too lazy to hold a book and flip pages) to relax. Lord of the Rings (both book and films) but also the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind (the TV series is a very weak cinematic version of those books) and many other whodunnits, sci-fi books and fantasy stories. View the poll results » Sometimes I read 3-5, if no time, but I love to read as many I can, so other time might be 12, 20, 10. Depends on the books that appear from my favorites authors (J.Grisham, Paulo Coelho...many others) and the stock in the library. ohh, but what about the number of the pages...is not the same a book with 800 pages and one with 100. Last one was above 800 pages... (the last part from Eragon series)

Used to be 30 plus, now .... :-( | Jan 20, 2013 |
I used to manage 30 plus, but since I had my twin daughters I'm afraid that's plummeted to about five-ish. | | | many more than 12 | Jan 20, 2013 |
I've read 51 books in 2012 and that's about an average number. I can't live without reading, never could, since I remember myself. I read mostly in Italian which is my second working language, English and very little in my mother toungue, which is not good but books in Russian are difficult to find in Italy
51 books I read makes 13430 pages | | | Nicola Wood Austria Local time: 08:53 Member (2010) German to English
Never bothered counting, but 12 books a year would never be enough! Of course it depends on what it is and how busy I am, some books obviously take longer than others, and then there are my book club books which I normally read more than once... Even my kids (aged 15 and 9) read a lot more than 12 in a year - I know because I pay for them!

Between working and the rest of my life, I really don't have time to read more than a few each year, although I do regularly read the newspapers. I don't feel I'm missing out on anything though. Books are expensive in Spain so I used to just mainly read what visitors left behind when they came to visit, until a couple of years ago a second when a second-hand bookshop opened up in town where you can take books back and swap them for others, or get a credit note towards the next one y...
