In the past I have tried to understand what the transcheck function is actually for and how to use it, as it surely serves a useful function, but I haven't been able to work it out. Are there any 'idiot's guides' out there?

I know I am not the only one out there who is technically challenged - maybe others have just been too afraid to ask

Hello!

Transcheck is run at the end of the translation.

Firstly, you should define your preferences/parameters at Edit>File>Transcheck. You should click or unclick to get a final translated file as it suits your job/file/client’s demands better.

Hello!

Transcheck is run at the end of the translation.

Firstly, you should define your preferences/parameters at Edit>File>Transcheck. You should click or unclick to get a final translated file as it suits your job/file/client’s demands better.

After committing your final changes to the TM (Commit to TM icon or Alt +End) when you select “Save translated file”, if any parameter selected in the Transcheck function is not respected, you won’t be able to save the translated file and put it back to its original format/extension.

This is mostly important, when dealing with complex files with a lot of tags referring to figures, tables or charts, which have to be at the right place if you want a perfect translated document with all data at the right place.

If is a simple Word doc that may be edited at the end, in the document to be delivered, Transcheck is not so important…

For further doubts WF support hotline usually gives you a reply in less than 24 h.

Hope this helps….

Thank you Apr 12, 2012

for replying, Silvia. As I thought, it is probably more for long technical files containing lots of numbers - I try to avoid those as a rule.

However, it might be useful to have a simple guide as to how to set it up just in case - I can see when you go to 'preferences/transcheck' there is a whole list of variables under 'configuration' with tick boxes, errors and warnings, and the terrifying-looking 'forbidden characters' and 'blacklists' but I am afraid I can't work it out at all -

Yes - Apr 12, 2012

Wordfast 'Pro', although as I do more research it seems that 'Classic' might have more functionality, at least for my purposes, and I chose the wrong version.

Although you renewed your license as Pro only in January, you can still convert it into Classic at no cost or into Studio (= Classic + Pro) at a small extra cost (75 euros). Contact the hotline if you want to do either.

TransCheck Apr 13, 2012

Dear Gerry,

I recommend you refer to this page of the online help; it is so clear:
http://www.wordfast.com/WFP2/Translating_in_a_project/Using_Transcheck.htm

It is highly recommended to check your TXML file and see if there are any missing or mismatched placeables. You can run TransCheck on Placeables (Edit > Preferences > TransCheck > select Placeables (Apply)) and then use the toolbar button TransCheck; insert and correct the missing or the mismatched placeables. There are many other options that are described on the help page.

To run TransCheck on your current file, you can use one of two methods:
1- Use the toolbar button "Transcheck".
2- Enable the option "Active Transcheck" so that it works with Alt+Down

Under the TransCheck dialogue, there are two kinds of options: some you can just enable without any additional settings; others have sub-options. For the latter, you should check the option and click "Apply"; you must click "Apply" before moving the the sub-tab to adjust the settings. For example, after checking "Forbidden Characters" and clicking "Apply", go to the sub-tab, click "Add", and type the character that you do not want to have in the target.

---------------------------------

One comment on the online help page: "Viewing Transcheck warning" requires updating

2. Type the target segment. A warning message and a warning signal appear before the target segment.

Correction: Currently TransCheck warnings do not appear upon just typing, but it requires either clicking the toolbar button, or enabling "Active TransCheck" to work upon pressing Alt+Down (or Alt+Q as well in the WFP3).

I hope this helps.

Clarifications Apr 13, 2012

Dear Sílvia,

Good! But you can also enable "Active TransCheck" to make it work with Alt+Down.

Well, this could be the case, but not always. Only missing "Placeables" can cause that; sometimes, with missing "Placeables", you can still "Save Translated File" but get badly formatted document. If the problem is rather in Numbers, Punctuation, Terminology, etc., you will be able to "Save Translated File" but you will have those mismatches remaining.

In fact, TransCheck itself has nothing to do with "Save Translated File", but it helps avoiding such mismatching problems.

HTH,
Yasmin

Blacklists Apr 13, 2012

Dear Gerry,

Gerry Vickers wrote:

.... and 'blacklists'

Blacklists, like "Terminology", should be configured at its place.

When you have a glossary, and check the TransCheck option "Terminology", WFP will warn you if you have a term in the source, but you do not have its translation (found in your active terminology list) in the target.

Blacklists is like a terminology list, but includes words that you should NOT use in your translation. You can create a blacklist by going to Edit menu > Preferences at the sub-tab "Blacklist" under the main tab "Terminology". Click "New" (or "Create" in WFP3) and "Browse" for a location to save your blacklist file. Then, on the toolbar button, click "Edit Blacklist", and in the blacklist editor click "Add" to add a new blacklisted word and the proper one that should be used instead (for reference only, not for automatic replacement). You can even have a ready-made text file (say provided by your client) to use as a blacklist.

Now, in TransCheck, when you enable the option "Blacklists", if WFP find a blacklisted word in the target, it will warn you that there is a blacklisted word and it should be so and so instead (if you have inserted a substitute suggestion in your blacklist).

HTH,
Yasmin
