So, there is this "new translation service" out there that just sent out a mass e-mail saying that they were now restricting translations to be done into one's native language because the slew of incoming product they were receiving was "not up to quality standards".

Newly discovered on the front page of this "new translation service", however, I found this:

When you click further to see their most expensive rate for the most excellent and advanced work, it says: "$0.0175"

Doh! ... NOW I GET IT!!!

I'm not sure if they do though.

... not free at all. I asked for a quote for a legal text (293 words) and they asked me to pay $45.00, which means that they charge $.1535/word.

I'd rather think it was a typo on Bryan's post.

well... wer lesen kann... Jan 22, 2012

I took a look at the link Marina wrote, and it says:

Need an accurate professional translation? Get an instant professional translation quote.

A quote, not a translation. Or have I missunderstood that? I´m a bit tired of finding the same sort of witch hunt even in threads in which it is completely OT.

misleading Jan 22, 2012

I'm tired of people starting rants on low rates, too (especially when it's a near-obvious typo or mathematical ineptitude - one or two zeroes too many after the point).

However, the URL and the wording of the site Marina mentioned is intentionally misleading in order to generate more web traffic (search engine optimization trickery) - the expression "professional translation" reiterated on and on and included in an unnecessary link, the "free" component everywhere etc.

Indeed it is exclusively a thick, fat and avoidable bait.

$35k / 5M credits = $0.007 / credit.

And it says you can purchase services for as little as 1 and 2 credits per word.

Yes, I believe that this is what it's all about.

And since it's not a typo, the credibility of these sites is, well, in the eyes of their clients.

Check out the facilities Jan 23, 2012

Enter the company's address in Google Maps to see take a look at the facilities. Use Google's Street View feature to check out the neighborhood, particularly their host services.

I guess everyone's entitled to be a startup...
