I am a Linux user and have just installed OmegaT on my system, what happens if they ask for Trados, but Trados doesnt work on Linux , do they accept other CAT tools?

yes
but i have tried to get virtualbox to run XP before and found it very difficult to operate, wish there was a simpler way.

having difficulty with installing it on a Opensuse 11.4 64 bit platform.
hang on looks like it comes under the AMD64 although its an intel system.

I am just trying to get the right tools for the job.
I see that a lot of companies or clients want it translated in Trados, so i am trying to get it to run on Vbox.

I have managed to install virtualbox successfully and go through the wizard but i am not sure how to get WinXP running , do i need XP disc and what are:
virtualbox disk image
virtual machine disk
virtual hadr disk
paralells ?
because i dont know which one to select?

Try Wordfast Pro and Swordfish.
Both software have got native Linux version and work quite well. Of cousre, they have their limitations, but these limitations are not related to the Linux operating system, but the softwer (e.g. lack of full-fledged vocabulary module in Wordfast, lack of number QA check in Swordfish). All in all, the decision is yours: you need to decide if you are able to be 100% compatible with your clients.

Unfortunately the big and most useful CAT tools (e.g. memoQ or Trados) do not have Linux versions. And as I see, if you use a virtual Windows OS under Linux, then you do not get rid of Microsoft, only waste the resources of your PC and make your life more difficult.

Yes. To install an OS in VBox, you need its installer disc. To use XP legally in VBox, you also need an XP license.
I would consider using a full-on (not virtualized) Windows install for work. You don't have to quit using linux, you can dual boot if you want to. In linux, you don't have native MS Office and you can't do most jobs that I come across without an MS Office install. Some people will say you can use OpenOffice but that's not really true. The compatibility isn't 100%. Same with CATs. You can try to use OmegaT, but it's nowhere near as mature as commercial CATs and compatibility is pretty limited (there are many jobs you can only do properly if you have the CAT required by the client, which is often Trados).
You can use virtualization if you're really attached to linux, of course. I use VBox myself on a Win host and it works pretty well... but I prefer to work in a "native" environment.

Or you can search the OmegaT Yahoo mailing list and even subscribe to it to ask questions.
