I am new to subtitling. It would be great if someone could recommend a subtitling software. I need to subtitle avi format videos.

You could try EZTitles (www.eztitles.com) as a professional subtitling software. They have a one-month trial period when you can use it fully. As all professional software, it's quite pricy, unfortunately (around 2,500 euros), but you can buy it in installments, with no interest.

Try Subtitle workshop. It is free, reliable and easy to use. Subtitle Workshop is very popular software in the world of subtitling. Although it does not support all Asian unicode languages, you'll feel convenient as it fully supports your language pair.

Both are quite expensive, but well worth the cost!
I agree with Cristina: Subtitle Workshop is absolutely inappropriate for professional subtitling (as well as any other free subtitling software).
