But to be honest the figure is plucked out of the blue. Had the question been 'what percentage of your work do you use CAT tools for?' then the figure would have been much higher. But in a lot of cases it is not required, just very useful.

11-30 % Feb 11, 2011

I translate only into Turkish. Naturally technical translation is a part of my translational life! But, i can say only 11-30 % of total translation jobs requires-demands a CAT tool.

Note: I can't generalize it. Many translator friends of me works fully classical.

I'd say about 10%. Sometimes the client requests it, other times, as Mary said, it's just plain useful.

The other 90% would be texts that, IMO, it would be more of a bother than a help.

Hardly any Feb 11, 2011

Hardly any of my projects require the use of CAT tools. Still, I find it helpful to use my preferred CAT tool in most cases but I am hardly ever asked to use one.

Other Feb 11, 2011

I didn't know how to answer this to be honest, so I had to put "Other". None of my projects actually "require" the use of CAT tools, although I do tend to use Wordfast for most of my work because it suits me. No-one insists that I do so however!

Like some others, I find it quite useful and so even if I am not asked to use a CAT tool, I use it anyways!

I generally don't work on repetitive texts and I work mostly for direct clients, so there's really no *requirement* involved, but I use WF for most projects as I find certain features - like the concordance search - to be extremely useful and great time-savers when I come across tricky terms I know I've had before.

It took me a couple of years in the business to see the point of CAT tools and in hindsight I'm more than happy that I didn't use any right from the start. But meanwhile they're required for some (more corporate) clients and over time I've learnt that they clearly have their benefits, which we all know. So I don't only use them when absolutely required but also when simply appropriate for the one or other reason - even if a source text isn't repetitive at all, e.g. if it is just in a format that... "Require"? Feb 11, 2011

I am not sure if "require" means that clients/agencies specifically require it, or if the character of the project concerned is such that it requires the use of CAT tools. In the first case I would say about 11-30%, in the second case 91-100%, I guess...

Badly worded question! Feb 11, 2011

What on earth does this mean? I don't think there is any translation project that would be impossible without a CAT tool. Agencies may require the use of CAT tools. The deadline may have been set so that it is not reasonable for the project to be carried out without a CAT tool. The translator may consider a CAT tool essential for consistency. If respondants can come up different interpretations of what the question means, which are liable to result in different answers, the results are worthles... See more

Very rare, but... Feb 11, 2011

It's a very rare situation that my client require use of CAT, but I use is all the time - simply because I consider Trados Studio 2009 as my daily work space. Imagine - no CAT rates, only 100%, but all work done with CAT. After 12 months of my work with Trados I already saved a lot of time and earned a lot easy money. And when I give my customers some rebate they come back again and again with similar jobs.
Right after my laptop CAT was the best investment in my one woman company... See more
