Hi, I am a polyglot because I lived in 7 different countries due to my parent's job. I actually studied psychology and specialized in psychopedagogy in college, but my professional life has mostly been focused on translation.

I would like to know some of you experienced translators' opinion on the "Professional Translator Certification" sponsored by the "Global Translation Institute". is it really good? is it recognized as a real credential in the translation business?

I would like to know some of you experienced translators' opinion on the "Professional Translator Certification" sponsored by the "Global Translation Institute". is it really good? is it recognized as a real credential in the translation business?

In case this is not THE credential to have, what would be a more important credential to have in this business? A translation master's degree?

Thank you for your opinion and advice.

Already discussed in detail Nov 16, 2010

We had a very detailed discussion here:

(You will also find a long analysis about this matter in another translation portal.)

Very basically, the "Global Translation Institute" is just one of the names of a private company (it is no "institute") that sells "certification programmes" with no recognition whatsoever. Well, they recognise themselves of course.

What you should probably consider is some serious certification by established, recognised institutions like the American Translators Association (atanet.org), the Chartered Institute of Linguists (www.iol.org.uk), or other organisations that offer certification in your language pairs.

Good luck!

translators are almost never asked for their diploma's Nov 16, 2010

(unless it's for an inhouse position, maybe)

... which corresponds to the focus on price instead of quality...

(and there is no guarantee a trained translator is actually better then somebody without a diploma - - who may just have tons of experience)...

So apart from professional association like ATA, or whatever is valid for your country... THE BEST credentials come from happy customers...
