I have a choice, of course, but my broadband ISP provider has terms that ensure that no outage will exceed 24 hours; these have been few in all my years of broadband use and they have delivered so far (longest time to repair has been 12 hours). I've never been trapped in a situation so urgent as to require recourse to another connection.

I live in a small village in North Wales and our BT exchange is rubbish, we've had about 4 problems this year, and one time internet was down all weekend. When you call the customer service to inform of the problem, they force you to go through the troubleshooting routine (I refuse to do it) and won't accept it's a major problem, unless there are more people ringing up to complain. As we are a small village, almost half of us ring up so in the end we manage to convince them. It's so frustrating ... In Madrid there is free city-provided internet in certain locations, and luckily some of it flows right into my apartment! Not good enough for everyday use, but in a pinch you can get some email thru and keep looking at proz.com

When my cable Internet is down (about every other month, from minutes to several hours) I use mobile connection on my smartphone.

It very rarely happens, although I live quite a long way off the beaten track.
Once I did get as far as calling the client - I had an urgent job to deliver by 12 noon and the mail was down... I would be slightly late if I drove the 50km with the files on a diskette, and I needed advice on where to park in town! In the end the mail was working again by 11. 30, and I mailed the files on time.

The other time there was a fault with our router, which I never did understand, but our obliging neighbour learnt a thing or two about sending file attachments and downloading from FTP servers before we got our router sorted!
Now my husband has a wireless connection as well as the land line. I have never used it, but it is a safety net of sorts, although it is less secure, and joins the same land line at a later stage.
I remember when my father used to light a candle and carry on translating (writing his text in Marathi with a fountain pen...) when there were power cuts.

Lucky you. In this part of the world (central Italy, half a mile from the nearest town, with only one ISP to choose from), when things go wrong it can take 2 weeks to get it sorted out, and much longer for the refund on the bill to come through. Grrr. At least it has only happened once so far.

When I used to live downtown, I would go to an Internet cafe. Now, I would go to someone from my family. when I move next time (soon), I'm planning to take 2 different internet providers to reduce the risk.

I have a USB stick with mobile Internet for travel and such. It is cheap in Poland (flatrate, about EUR 10/month) so I always have it. Mobile Internet also helps when the electricity brakes down (it sometimes does due to weather disasters such as floods and storms).

I get wifi outages all the time (yesterday it was on and off several times).
It depends on how urgently I need it. If it is for sending or receiving jobs, I go to whichever is the nearest. This varies depending on time of the year, time of day etc, for example here in semi-rural Spain in August many places shut down, or only open when it suits them.

If I have no home internet and load the dongle with, say, 30 euros of credit, I may only use it for ten minutes before the issue is resolved;. then, if a month later, the same thing happens again, I find that my credit has expired (you apparently have to use it up within a month). That meant trudging off to the local library under the blazing August sun for 1 hour of free internet connection a day. Needless to say, it was just enough to download any documents I received and answer a few emails.
Some neighbors also let me use their computers, but it wasn't a favor I wanted to abuse too often, so I tried to keep that option as an ace up my sleeve.

I pay a flat rate per month for a wireless mobile broadband connection for the family laptop (which is not supposed to be mine, but I'm the one who actually uses it the most). I have never had to use it because the home broadband was down, but that would be what I turn to first if necessary.

I have a dongle that I can use if needed and which has also come in handy when I'm visiting relatives or travelling the country in general (saves paying for hopeless hotel wifi connections). I also have my mobile connection to check email, and then if I fancy going out anyway, or as often happens I have a power cut as they work on the circuit board for my building (without warning, of course), there is an office space nearby where I can pay by the hour and they offer free tea/coffee and snacks f...
