Hello everyone,

I just got an email inquiry for a subtitling project
and they asked for a quote, per minute rate.

Is there a section on ProZ to check rates? Although
I know it varies by person.
Do you adjust the rate depending on whether:
-if you a master script? (this would make it easier)
-if you have to do the cuing/timing yourself
-is there any other factors?

Do you adjust the rate depending on whether:
-if you a master script? (this would make it easier)
-if you have to do the cuing/timing yourself
-is there any other factors?

I also know that clients usually want you to cut the phrases at the
appropriate places which I found to be challenging but fun.

I took a subtitling test before and I loved the
work but I remember the work was much more than translation since
I had to learn how to cut the phrase, adjust timing (do you call that cuing?)
and had to make adjustments to translation. Hence I would think the rate
should be higher than a pure translation job.

Also if anyone could tell me where to find a guideline for subtitling into English
I would very much appreciate it.

I really want to learn more and get better since I love films,
if anyone has an advice, I would very much appreciate it.

I will be working either from Korea->ENG or Japanese->ENG

thanks so much,

MovingPix

Yes it depends, May 3, 2010

Hi MovingPix,

As always it depends on the length, complexity, deadline.., etc
In your case I would assume the language combination is also an important factor.
And yes if you have to spot (time, cue..) it, you can also ask for more...
(and that will take some time, if you are not used to doing it)

I believe for English -> Dutch a nice rate is around 4-5 euros, with very nice going to 6-7 /per minute (including spotting)...

In the end it's a simple calculation : it it takes you all day to do a 30 minute documentary and you earn 150 euros, or you can translate 2000 words at 0,10 which gives you 200 euros, it's the flat text that wins (unless you see it as an investement into a carreer in substitling)

Some tips:
1 full line = min 3 sec / 2 full lines = min 6 sec
max 10-12 chars/ sec
max 38-40 chars / line
max 2 lines per box
3 frames between one title and the next
do no leave titles running across scene changes

Have fun!,

Thanks for the reply Edward.

Regarding the tips you gave me,
are you talking about timing here?

I should keep 1 full line of text on the screen for at least 3 seconds?
and for 2 full lines, 6 seconds?

And I should leave 3 frames blank before starting a new text?
ex)
Person A: Where are you going?
3 frames
Person B: Going out

What kind of software are you using, may I ask?

thanks again
