An agency just won a big contract starting 1st May. What do you think of their offered rates? (Personally, it doesn't surprise me they've been advertising weekly for the past four weeks all over the shop. People don't seem to be rushing to apply.) NEW PAYMENT CODES FOR PUBLIC SERVICE INTERPRETERS VALID FROM 1ST JANUARY 2010 -CODE 1 (Central London NHS) - Interpreting @ £17 per hour (all inclusive, no travel time paid separately) Note: You... Do they really think that somebody will work for them on such terms? I can't even imagine that the company can actually earn a living for itself of those measly rates. Some of the arguments made are more than 1 year old - credit crunch and government lowering the rates. One might only sigh when finding out the exact rates quoted to the final customer by these agencies. Back at school, we were taught the basic principles of capitalism, which did not refer to economic expoiting of subcontractors directly. I wonder, what this "credit crunch" story reults in quality-wise. Anyway, that´s reality, I can confirm this case is actuall... Laurent KRAULAND wrote: Any idea why this agency won this contract? I can think of one reason at least - no? That's exactly my point, Laurent. They've won the contract because they offered the client some pathetic rates without having their homework done and finding out how much interpreters actually charge. Now, from the frequency of their job postings (not only here but on every possible translators' and recruitment website), I think they are panicking a little bit as they can't find people who would work for such rates. | | | Krzysztof Kajetanowicz (X) Poland Local time: 23:46 English to Polish + ... that's the problem | Apr 9, 2010 |

Because it means that they have found somebody in EN-LV language pair who has agreed to this already. Obviously, there are people working for nothing and happily taking abuse from this agency. The fact that the rates are so low is nothing new - they do not even pay the travel expenses or for travelling time!!! Ridiculous! | | | Laurent KRAULAND (X) France Local time: 23:46 French to German + ... Ignoring may *not* be an option,... | Apr 9, 2010 |

While I agree it's the agency' problem, I think we will not be able to fight low rates unless we are consolidated. Ignoring is no longer an option. but the fact that the agency seems to be panicking about finding interpreters at those rates is rather a good sign, if I am allowed to say (passive solidarity, no interest, whatever...). Furthermore, and yes Krzystof, it is called the agency problem, because they should have searched for translators working at those rates before thinking about winning the tender. Reverse logic never works quite the way one would expect it. And in this case, it shows how highly this agency values its subcontractors - at a level below a cleaning lady.

Not at all! I actually saw this happening on a HUGE contract with a government agency here in the United States, the company I was working for as a consultant was underbid by 9 million dollars!!! The new company did not want to pay me what I was making with the other company so I left. They have not made a profit in 5 years and work has been sooooo s l o w!!! Some people stayed because that's was the only job they had.( | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » "Amazing" rates from the agency which just won a big contract Trados Business Manager Lite | Create customer quotes and invoices from within Trados Studio
