Recently we have seen unusual project requests from companies they are claming doing languages translation projects from India. Most of these projects are outsourced by An American companies who took the big project and subcontract to these Indian companies and these Indian companies are looking for translators and the project is coming back to US or to us. That is fine but the price they are trying to offer is really dumping the market and it makes me worried because it is hurting the whole industry. Now they are asking us to do a project for less than a penny it is 0.0008 USD per word. My question is do they really find people or just it is a joke? I see similar posting and why proz is allowing such practice that will bring most companies out of business

However, before flying off the handle ar bursting into tears, I'd want to be really sure that this is the correct rate.
Is this a job posted on ProZ?
If so, there seems to be frequent confusion by posters on how to fill in this part of the post. I've never posted a job so I don't know what is involved, but there have been quite a few jobs recently at ridiculously HIGH rates, too.
Maybe someone added animation to the decimal place?

The same company has contacted me and asked me if I want to do the job for them. The only question that I asked them was IS THIS A JOKE? After couple emails I told them to stop. I havent heard from them again.

This is a plague for our sector: multiple or "cascade" outsourcing. We all know that no regulation or whatever will stop or prevent such practices, but obviously they must stop at some point.
I suggest to the initial outsourcer that they should use free MT and do editing on their own. It would be less time-consuming and we would not have to deal again with such issues in public fora.

I cannot imagine them doing anything else than shaking their heads and thinking the translation sector is nothing but a funny farm with no hope for recovery. ... and send them to hell with the rudest swear word you know in your own language and the most threatening and angriest tone you may produce, without any further explanation.
This helps.
Then keep on with your everyday routine, job, life. You wouldn't have changed anything anyhow.

Not so recently. It's a matter of 'them' discovering that your language pair exists.

A self-described "London-based translations agency serving top law firms, banks, and marketing, advertising and PR agencies" ("We offer translators an excellent service," they add) yesterday asked me if I was interested in proofreading 9,000 words for GBP 78.75. Nine minutes later, when I wrote back with a realistic quote, they had already found someone willing to accept that job at that price. Admittedly, 0.00875 pounds for proofreading is more lucrative than 0.00857 dollars for translation, bu... Now, it is not anymore a matter of refusing a rate and therefore a job because the rate is too low, the lowering of rates has become a general trend all over the world, not only India or China or Poland etc. You can refuse one,two three times, but at the end if every agency or client is not willing to pay more as there are thousands of translators out there willing to accept anything in order to work, it becomes difficult to say no if you want to eat. If the client or the agency wants a mothertongue living in the country where the language he/she translates into is spoken, then rates should be those ones of that country. It is time that we all oppose alltogether to this trend, the only other solution being to change type of job and do something more gainful. Labour exploitation and forced labour are the anthitesis of decent work and both are a crime. ▲ Collapse

Those guys are trying to collect info from people who are willing to submit proposal, and next thing you know you are either infected with a virus or your paypal account emptied or any other calamities you may only think of...
Translation, the way i see it, has nothing to do with it - they probably approaching all professional sites, each with its own characteristics.
