I voted "It depends" because my friends and family understand that I don't always have regular working hours and sometime have to work a little later or in weekends. But personally I have decided to cut that down to a minimum. I usually work for ca. 50 hours on Monday till Friday, and that is really more than enough in my opinion.

Nobody can be always available. Everyone has a right to eat, sleep and be free sometimes.
Are your customers always available, e.g. at night or on Sundays (or Fridays/Saturdays in many countries)?

we are pretty much flexible as a family. If I have a lot to do and we decide to go out in the afternoon, then I work in the evening. My family know this and it is a bit of give and take. Sometimes I am not able to take a consecutive days off in a month and we solve everything in this way.
I just have to make sure that I keep to family events planned and work around them.

Does this question not assume that I myself have first adopted the position that I "must always be available"?
I'm available a lot, but not "always"....
So, "Other" for me.

I must not always be available either. My family understands that sometimes I work irregular hours, but we work around each other pretty well.

My partner understands that my work occasionally means long or unconventional hours, but I am certainly not "always available." As a general rule, I keep regular business hours and my customers and family understand this.
Although I enjoy what I do, I will not let work rule my life!

Who says that I must always be available? But yes, my family is usually pretty understanding about my odd hours.

Like the others above, I don't have to available all the time.
My husband does not always like it when, on occasion, I have to work very late because of a deadline, but that's just due to my own planning, or lack thereof.

In line with the previous commentators, I strongly believe that a healthy work-life balance is called for even in a freelance setting, which is why I also voted "Other". Whilst there may be irregular hours to be worked on some occasions, such as late in the evening or the occasional Saturday/Sunday, I also try to cut this down to a minimum.

The question is "do your friend of family make a fuss when you let them down because of a sudden job?"
My answer: yes, my friends do not always understand that I have to spend the night working rather than going out with them.
