Hello everyone!

I've been asked to provide a quote for a subtitling project from Italian into English.
The clip is a TV show and lasts 7 minutes. The client asks for an all included price per minute :
- transcription of the original dialogues (script non provided)
- translation
- spotting/cueing
- proof reading

I am new in this field and I don't know how much I should charge for this clip. I've read the posts in this and other forums, but

I am new in this field and I don't know how much I should charge for this clip. I've read the posts in this and other forums, but the information I found are often not clear and in contrast (some people charge 4£ per min, others 15£).
Being this my first experience, I calculated an average of 6£ per minute, considering all the tasks I am asked to complete. What do you think?
Has anybody ever experienced this kind of all-inclusive jobs?
How much do you think I should charge?

Thank you very much.

Some ideas Mar 15, 2009

Ciao, Francesca,

For my standards, this doesn't sound like an all-inclusive job. For me, an all-inclusive job would be more like:

1. Convert video (worst case, from VHS tape, and split into chapters, if there are any into digital).
2. Translate subtitles
3. Spot subtitles
4. Burn subtitles on video
5. Author DVD with menu (and submenus, if necessary)

Ciao, Francesca,

2. Translate subtitles
3. Spot subtitles
4. Burn subtitles on video
5. Author DVD with menu (and submenus, if necessary)

My rates in Brazilian reais and for the Brazilian market wouldn't be meaningful to you, so let's say that I charge "3x" per minute for translating (#2), "1x" per minute for spotting (#3), and more "1x" per minute for burning (#4).

I keep however a minimum of 15 minutes total playing time per job. This covers #1 at no charge if needed at no cost (sometimes it's converting from VOB, MPG, FLV, WMV, whatever into AVI), as well as #5 if it's not overly complex.

HTH.

My opinion. Mar 15, 2009

You say:

"I am new in this field and I don't know how much I should charge for this clip.

- transcription of the original dialogues (script non provided)
- translation
- spotting/cueing
- proof reading"

I imagine you could do point 1, 2, 4.

What about point 3? Now that's really hard.

01:02:03.12 01:02:06:02
- Do you love me?

- Yes, I do.

Something like that. Must be very accurate in Time In, Time Out.

You need some kind of software to do it.

And adapt dialogues translated from you transcription that says:

- Now, darling, do you really love, tell me?
- Yes, of course, my love, I do.

But, as you only have less than 3 seconds to put it in one dialogue, it must be this, as told.

- Do you love me?
- Yes, I do.

How about that?

Before asking how much to charge, you should ask yourself: "Can I do this?"

Best of lucks.

thank you Mar 15, 2009

Sorry, my mistake. The price is for the services that I wrote down, it doesn't include any file conversion or burning

Anyway, thanks for your example. I agree that the translation is the main part, but I didn't know how to deal with the other tasks.

Thanks again.

I use swift Mar 15, 2009

I am doing a Master Degree in Screen Translation, this project that I am doing is actually related to the Master. I use SWIFT to create the subtitles.

The task is to translate and subtitle this clip, have it proof checked, plus providing a chart with the original dialogue, the translation and other details.

It is actually quite a lot of work to do, that is why I don't know how much I should ask. I found a lot of quotes on the forum, but they rarely specify if they are

- transcription of the original dialogues (script non provided)
I will outsource the transcription to a fellow translator who's native languae is English, since my English is not good enough to transcribe each word.

I do it myself.

My suggestion, if you do not know how to spotting , do find someone who can do it. It will cost you one day - several days to master the software .

I hope this one helps Mar 16, 2009

Hi there!

I have never had to do the transcription because I was provided with the original translation and the spotting was already done, but I will tell you how much they pay me for translating and proofreading my translation: between 0,65 € and 0,85 € per subtitle (depending on the company), I only had to do minor changes to the Time in, Time out, I was basivally doing the text.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Elena

Why transcribe? Apr 17, 2009

If I'm doing a translation job, I normally only type in the translation rather than transcribing first. All you achieve by transcribing is doubling your work - unless the client wants an original transcript, which is another matter.

For translation, spotting and proofing, I charge £6/min.
If the client wants a transcript as well, I charge another £3/min.
