Hello,
Some translation assignments these days list a requirement of using Joomla. Joomla is astually a CMS like many others out there. What does "translation in Joomla" mean, and how it should be priced? I feel it is quite time consuming to copy-paste translated text into a CMS, does Joomla offer some kind of automated text import or other features that would be helpful to a translator?

Well, I suppose it simply means you should know how to use Joomla. If you know how to edit articles in Joomla, you know how to translate them. It's all quite simple, which I suppose is the whole point of a CMS.
I haven't heard of any extensions that assist you in translating the atricles, but there are some that will help you keep a multilingual website organised.

They probably mean using Joom!Fish http://www.joomfish.net/
This is actually a Joomla application used to manage multilingual websites.

It has to be JoomFish! for sure. I actually use it in my websites and I think it's great.

I'd like to know too. I tried to install Joomfish but I could not get it to work. So much for spending two hours downloading, installing and configuring Joomla, all for nothing. There is some or other weird setting in Joomfish that escaped me, no doubt. The upside is that Joomfish is a "native" plugin for Joomla, which means you can upload the Joomfish zip file and have it activated in Joomla in one step... that is, as long as all your other settings are in order.

Joomfish does not yet support any export format useful for translators (I have made a point to the developers years ago about xliff but it has not yet been implemented).
The simplest way is to log in to joomla and copy the html code of the articles you want translated into an empty html document.

If I start a completely new project in joomfish, would it make sense to initially translate in the UI that is provided by jf, and copy the html code of both SL and TL(s) into separate documents for alignment?

Aligned data can then be imported in a project TM and this can at least be used to make concordance checks?
With this, translation can take place in the jf UI for updates etc and consistency is given due to the concordance checks. However, the maintenance of the project TM is a complete must and has to be taken into account over the length of the entire project. What's your thoughts on this if in the future no conversion or export function will be implemented in jf? ▲ Collapse

Being a Translation & Localization company, we have quite a bit of experience of the difficulties in handling multilingual websites (identifying and extracting content that requires localization, maintaining translation consistency, reimporting localized texts correctly, etc). Hello,
This thread is quite old, however there is now an addon component for Joomla (versions 1.5-2.5) that allows exporting contents to Trados or other CAT tools and then reimport them to Joomla preserving formatting in translated texts.
It's called Joomcat (joomcat.com) and here is the link:
