I'm planning on open one soon, but I'm not sure where should I put it (space allocated by the ISP, get free service or rent a space from a company).

Luckily I have a brother who is a great web designer and had it professionally done for free as a favour (even though he charges "Eastern European" prices ) I only had to buy the domain and pay hosting, which cost me merely peanuts.

I was more than surprised to see that more than 40 percent of all poll participants (according to the present statistics) don't have a website for their freelance business.
Having a business website is really a must - it's not only indispensible, it's also a very cost-effective marketing tool for presenting yourself and your abilities and reaching out to your potential clients, around the clock, around the world.

I created my own site through Synthasite (www.synthasite.com). It was very easy, and is a simple, nice-looking site. I do think having your own site is helpful. I have gotten jobs through mine.

Unless things have changed, if you leave Proz you will no longer have access to your own website. So an independent website may be a safer solution.

Although I have never received business directly from my website and don't even bother to perform search engine optimization, I'm convinced that having a website, e-mail addresses on my company's domain, etc. are key to a successful freelance business, whether or not you intend to get your customers directly through your website.
My (very) small company does not only provide language services but also IT services, for which having a website is even more important.
BTW, I think it's great to know about my colleagues' experiences, so thanks to all for sharing!

While it may not necessarily generate direct revenue, it serves as a contact point and proves - to some extent - that you're running a serious business.
Fortunately, my own website came for free since in addition to translation, web design is another segment in my extensive business portfolio

Then I started outsourcing in other languages and working with other translators so I decided to revamp my website. The first week it was "officially" online I got a small job, then another medium job the next one. It's not a lot of business but it's something. I just bought the domain name, the hosting, learn Dreamweaver and HTML and did mine.
I liked the process of learning, I just love computer programs (I am here on the verge of "nerdiness").
I would recommend to have a webpage not only to every translator but also to every freelancer, it's your business card but only with more information. It shows more than a CV who you really are.

Currently in the process of writing the content for mine, and very excited about it too. Fortunately, I have a computer geek for a boyfriend to do all the technical bits, which I have neither the time nor inclination to get involved with. And even if just a small amount of work is generated through my site, it will more than compensate for the expense of setting it all up - which amounts to peanuts, as somebody mentioned.

A few months ago, we launched our web site. Although no one has contacted us yet, I know that it is a new window that we opened. You never know...

This poll is quite apt; I think there are several of us who voted 'no' but are actually considering various options like s_hokama, and are watching the discussion intently to get inputs for making a decision!
