Authorities scoured a western Indian city Sunday for those behind a series of bombings that killed at least 45 people, reportedly rounding up more than two dozen residents. It was the second series of blasts in India in two days.
A little-known group, “Indian Mujahideen,” claimed responsibility for the attack.
"In the name of Allah the Indian Mujahideen strike again! Do whatever you can, within 5 minutes from now, feel the terror of Death!" said an e-mail from the group sent to a number of Indian television news stations just minutes before the blasts began.
The e-mail's subject line said, "Await 5 minutes for the revenge of Gujarat," an apparent reference to 2002 riots in this western state which left 1,000 people, most of them Muslim, dead. The historic city of Ahmadabad is the capital of Gujarat and was the scene of much of the 2002 violence.
State government spokesman Jaynarayan Vyas told the Associated Press that 161 people were wounded when at least 16 bombs went off July 26 in several crowded neighbourhoods. The Saturday attack came a day after seven smaller blasts killed two people in the southern technology hub of Bangalore.
Another unexploded bomb was found and defused early Sunday, the city's police commissioner, O.P. Mathur, told AP reporter R.K. Misra. Mathur also said police had detained 30 people in their investigation.
Cities around the country were put on alert and security was stepped up at markets, hospitals, airports and train stations.
“Indian Mujahideen” was unknown before May, when it claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Jaipur, also in western India, that killed 61 people.
Saturday's e-mail, sent from a Yahoo account and written in English, was made available to The Associated Press by CNN-IBN, one of the news outlets that received the warning.
In its e-mail, the group did not mention the bombings in Bangalore and it was not clear if the attacks were connected.
Some television channels reported Sunday that police in Mumbai, India's business hub, had traced the e-mail to an address in the city but officials denied this.
"An e-mail was received by many news organisations. We are inquiring into that. We haven't traced it yet," the city's police chief A.N. Roy said.
The Saturday bombs went off in two separate sequences. The first, near a busy market, left some of the dead sprawled beside stands piled high with fruit, next to twisted bicycles. The second went off near a hospital.
The side of a bus was blown off and its windows shattered while another vehicle was engulfed in flames. Most of the blasts took place in the narrow lanes of the older part of Ahmadabad, which is tightly packed with homes and small businesses. Bomb-sniffing dogs scoured the areas that were hit.
Distraught relatives of the victims crowded the city's hospitals. One of the wounded was a 6-year-old whose father was killed in the blasts. He lay in a hospital bed with his arms covered in bandages and wounds on his face.
Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat state where Ahmadabad is located, called the blasts "a crime against humanity." He said the bombings appeared to have been masterminded by a group or groups "using a similar modus operandi all over the country."
"Anti-national elements have been trying to create panic among the people of our country. Today's blasts in Ahmadabad seem to be part of the same strategy," federal Home Minister Shivraj Patil told reporters in New Delhi.
India has been repeatedly hit by bombings in recent years. Nearly all have been blamed on Islamic militants who want to provoke violence between India's Hindu majority and Muslim minority, although officials rarely offer hard evidence implicating a specific group.
The perpetrators also rarely claim responsibility — a fact that raised doubts about the “Indian Mujahideen” when it first appeared in May to take credit for attacking Jaipur.
Adding to the misgivings about the claim was its origin. It was e-mailed from a French Yahoo account but was written in English by a person who signed the note Guru al-Hindi, or "Teacher of Indians." That blend of Arabic and Hindi was also considered unusual — South Asia's Muslims traditionally speak Urdu, not Hindi, which is historically associated with north Indian Hindus.
But the fears that an attack could spark religious riots are nonetheless real in India, which has seen sporadic violence between Hindus and Muslims since independence from Britain in 1947.
Those fears were amplified by the history of Ahmadabad, where in 2002 riots between Muslims and Hindus left about 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, dead. The violence was triggered by a fire on a train packed with Hindu pilgrims, which killed 60 passengers. Hindu extremists blamed the deaths on Muslims and rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods, although the cause of the blaze remains unclear.
Ahmadabad is also known for the elegant architecture of its mosques and mausoleums, a rich blend of Muslim and Hindu styles. It was founded in the 15th century and served as a sultanate, fortified in 1487 with a wall six miles in circumference along with 12 gates, 189 bastions and 6,000 battlements.

" اللہ کے نام سے ہندوستانی مجاہدین دوسری بارحملہ کررہے ہیں! جو کرسکتے ہوکرلو، ابھی سے پانچ منٹ کے اندرموت کی دھشت دیکھو!" یہ ایک ای میل کاپیغام ہے جوکئی ہندوستانی ٹیلی ویژن اسٹیشنوں کوبلاسٹ ہونے سے پہلے بھیجا گیا۔ ای میل کے سبجیکٹ ﴿موضوع﴾والی لائن یہ لکھاگیاکہ" گجرات کے انتقام کےلیے پانچ منٹ انتظارکرو،" یہ اسی مغربی صوبے میں 2002 کے فسادات کی طرف ظاہری اشارہ تھا جس میں 1,000لوگ مارے گئے تھے جس میں اکثریت مسلمانوں کی تھی۔ احمدآبادکا تاریخی شہرگجرات کی راجدھانی ہے اور2002 کے فسادات کے زیادہ مناظراسے شہرنے دیکھے۔
صوبائی حکومت کے ترجمان جنایرن ویاس نے ایسوسی ایٹیڈ پریس کو بتایا کہ 161لوگ زخمی ہوئے جب 26 جولائی کو مختلف بھیڑبھاڑوالے آس پاس کے علاقوں میں 16 دھماکےہوئے۔ سنیچرکایہ حملہ اس وقت ہواجب سات معمولی دھماکوں سے ٹکنالوجی کا مرکزکہے جانےوالےجنوبی شہرمیں دولوگوں کی موت ہوگئی تھی۔
ایک غیردغابم اتوارکوسویرے ملا اورناکارہ بنایاگیا،شہرکےپولیس کمشنر، او، پی ماتھرنے اے پی پریس کے رپوٹرآر، کے مشراکوبتایا۔ ماتھرنے مزید یہ بھی بتایاکہ پولیس نے تحقیقات کےلیے 30 لوگوں کو حراست میں لیا ہے۔
پورے ملک میں شہروں کوالرٹ کردیاگیا اوربازاروں، شفاخانوں، طیران گاہوں اورریلوے اسٹیشنوں پرسلامتی کے انتظامات سخت کردیے گئے۔
"انڈین مجاھدین" مئی سے پہلےجب اس نے مغربی ہندوستان جے پورمیں بھی ایک سلسلہ واربم دھماکوں کی ذمہ داری قبول کی جس میں 61 لوگوں کی موت ہوئی تھی، بالکل غیرمعروف نام تھا۔
سنیچرکا ای میل یاہواکاؤنٹ سے بھیجا گیا اوریہ انگلش میں تھا جسے CNN-IBN ﴿سی این این- آئی بی این﴾نے ایسوسی ایٹیڈ پریس کومہیاکرایا،اسی نیوز کمپنی نے یہ وارننگ حاصل کی تھی۔
اس میل میں گروپ نے بنگلورکے دھماکوں کا ذکرنہیں کیا اوریہ صاف نہیں ہوسکا کہ دونوں حملے ایک دوسرے سے جڑے ہیں۔
چند نیوزچینلوں نے اتوارکو یہ خبردی کہ پولیس نے انڈیا کے تجارتی مرکزممبئی میں تین ای میل ایڈریس کا شہرمیں پتہ لگایا ہے، لیکن آفیسران نے اس سے انکارکیا ہے۔
" ایک ای میل بہت سے نیوز ایجنسیوں کو ملی۔ ہم لوگ اس کی تحقیق کررہے ہیں۔ لیکن اب تک ہم لوگ اس کا پتہ نہیں لگاسکے ہیں،" شہرکے پولیس سربراہ اے، این، رائےنے کہا۔
سنیچرکوبم دھماکے دومختلف جگہوں پرہوئے۔ پہلا ایک مصروف بازارمیں ہواجس نے کچھ یلاکتوں کوادھرادھراوندھامنہ کرکے پھلوں کے ڈھیرکے پاس چھوڑدیا، جومڑی سائیکل کے پاس تھا۔ دوسرادھماکہ ہاسپٹل کے پاس ہوا۔
بس کا ایک حصہ اڑگیا اوراس کی کھڑکیاں منتشرہوگئیں جب کہ دوسری گاڑی میں آگ لگ گئی۔ بیشتردھماکےاحمدآباد کے پرانے علاقے کی تنگ گلیوں میں ہوئے۔ جوکہ گھروں اورچھوٹی تجارتوں سے بھری ہیں۔ بم کاسونگھ کرپتانے لگانے والے کتےمتاثرہ علاقے کے چپے چپے کاگشت کررہے ہیں۔
متاثرین کے پریشان حال رشتہ داروں سے شہرکے شفاخانے بھرے ہوئے ہیں۔ ایک زخمی کی عمرصرف چھ سال تھی جس کے والد بلاسٹ میں ماردیے گئے۔ وہ ہاسپٹل کے بسترپرلیٹا ہواہے اس کے بازوپرپٹی بندھی ہوئی ہے اور سرپربھی چوٹیں ہیں۔
گجرات کے وزیراعلی ،جس صوبہ میں احمدآباد واقع ہے، نریندرمودی نے بلاسٹ کو انسانیت کے خلاف جرم بتایاہے۔" انہوں نے کہاکہ دھماکوں سے پتہ چلتاہے کہ اس میں ایک گروپ یا کئی گروپ نےپورے ملک میں ایک ہی طریقہ کارکواپناتےہوئے کلیدی کرداراداکیاہے۔"
" قوم مخالف عناصرہمارےملک کے لوگوں کے درمیان مشکل پیداکرناچاہتے ہیں۔ احمدابادمیں آج کا بلاسٹ اسی حکمت عملی کا حصہ ہے،" مرکزی وزیرداخلہ شیوراج پاٹل نے نئی دھلی میں صحافیوں کو بتایا۔
حالیہ سالوں میں ہندوستان بم دھماکوں سے متاثررہا ہے۔ اوران تمام میں اسلامی جہادیوں پرالزام لگایاگیا کہ یہ ہندوستان کے اکثریت ہندو اوراقلیت مسلمانوں کے درمیان فساداپھیلاناچاہتے ہیں، جب کہ آفیسرس بمشکل کوئی ٹھوس ثبوت پیش کرسکے ہیں جسے کسی خاص گروپ کی نشاندہی ہوتی ہو۔
اورانجام دینے والے بھی شاذونادرہی ذمہ داری قبول کرتے ہیں — یہ ایسی حقیقت ہے جس سے "انڈین مجاھدین" کے سلسلہ میں شبہ ہوتاہے جس نے مئی میں جے پوربلاسٹ کی ذمہ داری لی تھی۔
دعوی میں شبہ پیداہونے میں اضافہ اس کی اصلیت سے ہوا۔ کیوں کہ میل فرانسی یاہواکاؤنٹ سےکیا گیا تھا اور اسےانگلش میں ایسے شخص نے لکھا تھا جس نے سائن گروگل ہندی میں کیا، یا " ٹیچر آف انڈینس۔" یہ ہندی اورعربی کا آمیزہ بھی خلاف معمول تھا — کیوں کہ جنوبی ایشیائی مسلمان روایتی طورپر اردوبولتے ہیں، نہ ھندی، جوکہ تاریخی اعتبارسے شمالی ہندوستان کے ہندوؤں کے ساتھ جڑی ہوئی ہے۔
