Source text - English Tuscany needs little introduction. Cradle of the Italian Renaissance and home to some of the most inspiring landscapes, architecture, art, recipes and wines on Earth, it has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Tourists and culture aficionados pour in from Europe, the USA, South America, Japan, Australia and, more recently, Russia and China.
While the region’s world-famous cities pull the crowds with their monuments and museums, the countryside enjoys burgeoning interest. Guests are keen not only to visit Tuscany’s exquisite views and villages, savouring local produce and hospitality, but also to stay in an environment away from the hectic heat, bustle and expense of the medieval cities, now affected by the trappings of modern life.
Villa San Rocco offers the perfect setting from which to explore. The historic walled city of Lucca and nearby Pisa (with its recently upgraded international airport) are a 25-minute drive; Florence is little over an hour, and Siena lies barely an hour beyond that. To the west, the coast is half an hour, and the idyllic villages and beaches of Cinque Terre lie 50km further on. In winter, the ski resort of Abetone is under an hour’s drive to the north.
The village of Benabbio is itself of late undergoing a renaissance. Situated amidst wooded hills with stunning views over Bagni di Lucca (literally “The Baths of Lucca” – its bubbling hot springs once hosted poets Byron, Shelley and Keats and are still in use today) the village has recently witnessed a resurgence of foreign interest. At one time, the region was host to generations of ‘Grand Tourists’, who came from England and other parts of Europe to “take the air” and steep themselves in the rich culture. In Medieval times, it was on the pilgrim trail from Canterbury to Rome, and from Rome to Santiago in Spain (hence the association with San Rocco – more to follow…).
Now it appears another cycle has begun. Already there are several holiday lets in the village. Since the start of renovations on Villa San Rocco, two restaurants have opened – one in the village square opposite the church, and a pizzeria, just down the road from the house itself. It may be that merely seeing scaffolding around the villa, itself long an emblem of the village’s prosperity and for so many years forlorn, has helped inspire the mood. Indeed, the local community has been immensely supportive and friendly during reconstruction to date, and Benabbio’s inhabitants will continue to play a vital role in the villa’s future.

Mentre le famose città della regione attraggono le folle con i loro monumenti e musei, la campagna riscuote un vivo interesse. Gli ospiti sono interessati non solo ad ammirare le sublimi vedute e i paesi Toscani, ad assaporare i prodotti locali e godere dell'ospitalità di questi luoghi, ma anche a soggiornare in un ambiente lontano dalla frenesia, dal caos e dalle spese delle città medievali, ormai afflitte dai problemi della vita moderna.
Villa San Rocco offre il perfetto avamposto dal quale partire per esplorare la regione. La storica città fortificata di Lucca e la vicina Pisa (con il suo scalo recentemente dichiarato aeroporto internazionale) sono a 25 minuti di auto; Firenze si trova a poco più di un'ora e Siena a un'ulteriore ora di distanza. Ad ovest la costa si trova a circa mezz'ora e i quieti villaggi e le spiagge delle Cinque Terre si trovano a 50Km di distanza. In inverno la località sciistica dell'Abetone è a meno di un'ora in auto, in direzione Nord.
Lo stesso paese di Benabbio sta recentemente attraversando una fase di rinascita. Situato in mezzo alle colline, con una vista mozzafiato su Bagni di Lucca (le sue sorgenti termali calde una volta ospitavano i poeti Byron, Shelley e Keats), il paese è recentemente stato oggetto di un rinnovato interesse da parte degli stranieri. Un tempo la regione era la meta di generazioni di viaggiatori che compivano il Grand Tour, partendo dall'Inghilterra e da altri paesi Europei per “respirare l'aria” e immergersi nella ricca cultura del luogo. In epoca Medievale la zona si trovava sulla via del pellegrinaggio da Canterbury a Roma, e da Roma a Santiago, in Spagna (da qui l'associazione con San Rocco, altri dettagli di seguito nel testo).
Oggi sembra che un nuovo ciclo sia cominciato. in paese sono già nate varie residenze di vacanza. Dall'inizio dei lavori di ristrutturazione di Villa San Rocco, sono stati aperti due ristoranti - uno nella piazza del paese di fronte alla chiesa, e una pizzeria proprio in fondo alla strada in cui si trova la casa.
Probabilmente il semplice fatto di vedere le scaffalature attorno alla villa, essa stessa da tempo un simbolo della prosperità del paese e abbandonata da anni, ha contribuito a cambiare l'atteggiamento. Infatti la comunità locale è stata incredibilmente solidale e amichevole durante la ricostruzione e fino ad oggi, e gli abitanti di Benabbio continueranno a giocare un ruolo decisivo nel futuro della villa.

Source text - English The illusion of art – when the object deceives.
Trompe l’oeil painting is notoriously difficult to define, and often masquerades as other genres. Alfred Frankenstein argued it is characterised by the use of shallow perspective in order to create the illusion of depth, but this seems limited and technical, an attempt to pour the fluid nature of trompe l’oeil into the rigid confines of a definition. Trompe l’œil is distinguished not just by its realism, nor even by its shallow perspective (after all, still life, perspective painting, photography and indeed hyper-realism can all claim to be realistic) but by its wit. In the best trompe l’œil the artist deliberately sets out to trick you, and most importantly, to let you know you have been tricked – trompe l’oeil is almost painfully self-conscious. The exhibition Art and Illusions [Palazzo Strozzi October 2009 – January 2010] celebrated the charm, irony and sometimes irreverence of trompe-l’œil, from antiquity to the present. The Palazzo Strozzi’s own playful approach to the subject was shown by the very first work that the visitor encountered, Pere Borrell del Caso’s painting Escaping Criticism, which showed a young boy escaping the rigid confines of a gilded frame, being watched attentively by an American tourist with her baby in a stroller – the work of the hyper-realist sculptor Duane Hansen. Trompe l’oeil delights in the existence of the Other, and is the expression of an artist who directs the gaze outwards, in the expectation of meeting – and confounding – other minds.
The art of illusion – when the subject deceives.
As one of the serendipitous consequences of having discovered an extraordinary trompe l’oeil painting – DJIA VU – in the home of a private collector while organising the exhibition above, and met the heirs of the artist, who came to Florence to see the work in the exhibition, I found myself writing the biography of Otis Kaye. Writing a biography means confronting very quickly how little we know about anybody. It is an interesting paradox that on the one hand, we all know something about each other (our friends, our partners, our children) but by no means everything. On the other hand, everything is known by someone – but often by many different people. The bank teller, the flight attendant, the shopkeeper, the dentist, the co-worker, the business colleague – the more complex the life, the more people are needed to complete the picture. Of course I am not speaking of the ‘interior world’ of thoughts, ambitions and dreams, merely the visible world of being somewhere at sometime doing something – which is already difficult enough. Otis Kaye was a German painter born in Dresden in 1885, who came with his parents to Neemah (or Nahma) Michigan in 1888. After leaving in his teens to study engineering in Germany, he returned to America and settled in Chicago, where he went to live near his cousin, Paul Banks I. Outside of his work as an engineer, his activities were only known when he appeared on the family’s doorstep – otherwise he moved in mysterious ways, for which most of the documentary evidence has been lost or destroyed. When the family decided – under pressure from a series of unscrupulous dealers – to put Uncle Otis’s pictures on the market in the 1980s, a lot of fictional biography was written to create a cloud of legitimacy around Otis Kaye. For instance, two of the first works to be sold were said to be from the 1920s, and, as Kaye had signed them with the name of another artist, N.A. Brooks, the story soon circulated that he had met Brooks in his youth in New York in 1903, had once owned a painting by Brooks, had belonged to the circle of trompe l’oeil painted around Brooks etc. In fact, the paintings were made in the 1960s, one of them explicitly as a wedding present for Paul Banks III’s fiancée – and the N.A. Brooks signature was just another example of mature (and characteristic) Kaye irony. As with much research, the riddles continue, and we seem to have more questions than answers.
Translation - Italian L'illusione dell'arte: quando l'oggetto inganna. Il trompe-l'œil è notoriamente un genere pittorico difficile da definire, e spesso si traveste da altri generi. Alfred Frankenstein ha sostenuto che ciò che lo caratterizza è l'uso di una leggera prospettiva per creare l'illusione della profondità, ma questa definizione sembra limitata e tecnica, un tentativo di costringere la natura fluida del trompe-l'œil all'interno dei limiti rigidi di una definizione. Il trompe-l'œil si distingue non tanto per il suo realismo, e nemmeno per la sua leggera prospettiva (dopo tutto, la natura morta, la pittura prospettica, la fotografia e in effetti anche l'iperrealismo sono tutti generi che possono reclamare il diritto di essere altrettanto realistici) bensì per il suo spirito ironico. Lo stesso modo giocoso con il quale Palazzo Strozzi ha trattato il soggetto era evidente sin dalla prima opera nella quale il visitatore si sarebbe imbattuto, il dipinto di Pere Borrell del Caso In fuga dalla critica, che rappresenta un giovane intento a fuggire dai rigidi confini di una cornice dorata, sotto l'occhio vigile di una turista americana con un bimbo nel passeggino – l'opera dello scultore iperrealista Duane Hanson. Il trompe-l'œil si diletta nell'esistenza dell'altro, ed è l'espressione di un artista che rivolge lo sguardo verso l'esterno, nell'attesa di incontrare – e confondere – altre menti.
L'arte dell'illusione: quando il soggetto inganna. Quale fortuita conseguenza dell'aver scoperto uno straordinario dipinto trompe-l'œil – D’-JIA-VU? – nella casa di un collezionista privato mentre organizzavo la mostra già citata, incontrando gli eredi dell'artista che erano venuti a Firenze per vedere le opere esposte, mi sono trovato a scrivere la biografia di Otis Kaye. Scrivere una biografia significa rendersi conto molto velocemente di quanto poco sappiamo di chiunque. Il fatto che da un lato tutti sappiamo qualcosa degli altri (i nostri amici, i nostri partner, i nostri figli), ma non sappiamo mai tutto, costituisce un interessante paradosso. D'altro canto tutto è a conoscenza di qualcuno – ma spesso di persone diverse. L'impiegato di banca, l'assistente di volo, il commesso del negozio, il dentista, il collega, il partner in affari – più complessa è la nostra vita, più persone sono necessarie per completare il quadro. Ovviamente non sto parlando del “mondo interiore” che comprende i nostri pensieri, ambizioni e sogni, ma semplicemente del mondo visibile, conseguenza dell'essere in un determinato posto, in un determinato momento, facendo una determinata cosa – che è già una questione abbastanza complicata. Otis Kaye era un pittore tedesco, nato a Dresda nel 1885, che si era trasferito con i suoi genitori a Neemah (o Nahma), Michigan, nel 1888. Partito, ancora adolescente, per studiare ingegneria in Germania, fece ritorno in America e si stabilì a Chicago, dove andò a vivere vicino al cugino, Paul Banks I.
