Russia’s population is forecast to halve over the next 50 years. This is because the
country is experiencing only one side of the demographic transition. Fertility rates
fell sharply in the early 1990s but there has not been a commensurate fall in the
mortality rate. Russia has the lowest life expectancy among the developed countries.
In 1970 life expectancy at birth was 70, but between 1995 and 2000 it fell to 66.1
and is not expected to regain the 1970 level until 2025–30. The high level of vodka
consumption not only affects the population’s health – it also causes a large number
of fatal accidents. A failure to tackle the growing spread of AIDS is also contributing
to the high mortality rate

Se prevé una reducción de la mitad de la población de Rusia durante los próximos 50 años. Esto se debe a que el país está experimentando sólo una parte de la transición demográfica.
