COMMENTS ON RATES:

Yeah, my work doesn't come cheap. However...
...Long-term and high-volume clients get up to 20% discount off my regular rates, and the same goes for clients I like because they're nice or the work is a lot of fun.
...My minimum rate is reserved for fellow translators or those non-profits that I wish to support via the additional discount.
...I will consider jobs below my minimum, but they'd have to be something I'd really salivate over.
...Sometimes I do pro bono work and don't charge at all, but in general the circumstances have to be very special (I'm partial to the underdog), or it must be something which I'm dying to pick up experience in. An example of the latter would be Spanish voice talent work in commercial radio or TV ads for non-profit entities --I've done work for corporate clients, and I want to beef up my portfolio.
...The $40/hr minimum is for proofing, not for editing or translating; the $80/hr fee applies to these. Proofing galleys or bluelines as part of a translation job is billed at lower rates.
...And, last but certainly not least, I will not do porno or so-called "adult" material at any price. Don't even bother asking. It's not that I consider it immoral --merely silly, juvenile, and boring.


30+ years experience editing, proofing, teaching, translating and writing for clients in the academic, corporate, private, and public sectors. 20+ years under the name Intergraf Americas, where I'm chief cook and bottle washer, and everything in between.

Although I have a warped sense of humor, I do take my work and the confidential nature of it VERY seriously.

Was part of the translation team that handled the Spanish side of the companion web site for "The U.S.-Mexican War (1846-1848)," a PBS documentary done by KERA in 1998 and simulcast in both countries. Awesome program, by the way. The site has been updated by another company, and errors ranging from typos to mistranslations have been introduced.

While I've done interpreting work in the past, I'm not an interpreter. I did take the Federal Court Interpreter's exam for the English-Spanish language pair back in the early 1980's and passed the written. After the oral, the 3 examiners complimented me on my mastery of both languages and recommended practicing simultaneous interpreting and brushing up on legal terminology (not a problem when translating, since there's plenty of time to rack my brain and research terms). Basically they seemed to feel it wouldn't take much to come up to scratch. I never took the oral again, as I did not aspire to be an interpreter and saw no point in pursuing it just for the glory: passing the written was glory enough for me. These days, interpreting, -specially simultaneous, is something I will only do at gunpoint.

Except for the court interpreter certification tests mentioned above, have never taken any other certification or accreditation test, as I've been too busy working. Don't even have degrees in English or Spanish: those were my minors. I have a B.A. German, an M.A. in French, my native language is Spanish and I learned English at age 12. My only accreditation is happy, long-term clients who allow me to make a living as a full-time freelancer, refer others and keep telling me how good I am. ;-)
