French to English: "Minnesota Sur Seine" Jazz Festival Album Review (Alliance Française de Minneapolis-St. Paul)
Source text - French Happy Apple
>Youth Oriented
(nato bear series 066126-2/Universal). Michael Lewis (ss, as, ts, b), Eric Fratzke (elb, g), Dave King (dm, jouets, perc, Mellotron).

Translation - English Happy Apple
>Youth Oriented
(nato bear series 066126-2/Universal). Michael Lewis (soprano, alto, tenor, and barry sax), Eric Fratzke (electric bass, guitar), Dave King (drums, toys, percussion, Mellotron).
Impossible, or almost impossible, to avoid Britney Spears: the illustration featured on the cover of the fifth opus of Happy Apple is a parody of the one on her last CD… But the “youth-oriented” similarities stop there: we have produced young people (the public) that we deserve – Britney Spears is a product created by industry cynics and geared primarily towards teenagers who, with the help of tentacular marketing, will swallow anything, even if it means spitting it out barely digested – products of synthesis always end up making us sick to our stomachs faster than expected…
In contrast, Happy Apple is a trio created by open-hearted players who are less worried about “what they will say?” than “what will we play?” and geared primarily towards… everyone, old or young (in Minneapolis, their home city, their fans are confounded by freshness, youth, and diversity), amateurs of “adventure” music (without labels, thanks).
No clichés, absolutely no nostalgia, but rather a permanent implicit fervor, a subtly channeled strength always ready to leap out: Lewis, Fratzke and King are malicious virtuosos capable of the most unrestrained improvisation (those who have seen them on stage know something about this), but their way of sending the message certainly brings to mind the style of the best creative rock “power trios” of the late ‘60s – the experience of Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Mountain…
In short, Happy Apple is a necessary group, an intelligent antidote to cult idiocies and, most importantly, a group of extremely talented friends who haven’t finished entertaining us – although their music is more complex than it seems, it remains very easy to listen to – and gives us a sense (direction, future) to the music which has survived and lives on, and which we all love and, lacking a better term and to avoid shocking bothered and bothersome fans, we will continue to spell J, A, double Z.
