Source text - Japanese ... 互いに共通する石への想いによって、友情が生まれた。「石」は、もっと愛されるべきではないか。それは栄光の天地創造からの贈り物であるのに、いまだ見過ごされているとは！今日では多くの人々は精神性などには無関心で、石はただの原料と考えている。だがこの本の中には、私たちと岩石の古代からの繋がりの証拠がある。―神の座る磐座、人に霊感を与える柱、隠者の慰めの場所、己よりも大きな存在に謹んで畏敬や信仰の念を表す場所―。
このような場所の多くは、神社によって守られ、または神社として祀られている。神道は、精霊崇拝の信仰で、私たちを古代へと連れて行ってくれる。神社のご神体の木や石は、強いエネルギーを発して、私たちは本来自然界の一部（一員）であるということを気づかせてくれる。このような場所では、人類は宇宙全体の一部であると感じたに違いない。今この時代においても、こういうことを感じることが大切であると思う。
石の聖地は世界中に存在し、郡司はそれらの写真もたくさん撮影している。グレート・ジンバブエ遺跡、マチュピチュ、カイラス山、スケリング・マイケル、など。日本の巨石は、これらの有名な場所の壮大さには及ばないかも知れないが、二つの重要な点でひけをとらないと思う。それは日本の巨石は人が足を踏み入れる事の少ない場所にひっそりと存在し、ひとたび近づけば私たちを瞬時に神話の世界に誘うような親密さをもって待っていてくれることだ。
Translation - English ... Ours is a friendship born of our mutual love of rocks! And why should rocks not be loved? They are part and parcel of the glorious Creation, yet sorely overlooked! It is as if today most can only see them as material, without a trace of spirituality. And yet, here in this book, is a testimony to the rocks’ ancient link with us – stone as the seat of a popular ancient god, a pillar of human inspiration, solace for the hermit, a place to show humility, respect, and devotion to something greater than oneself.
Many of these sites have been preserved by or as Shinto shrines. Shinto, largely an animistic faith, helps to take us back to primeval times: trees or rocks in the shrine precinct often leading us to an awareness of our original place in the natural universe, replete with great energy. In such places, mankind must have really felt part of a cosmic whole! In this day and age, too, it is good to feel this again.
Rock sanctuaries are to be found all over the world, and Gunji has photographed quite a number of them – the altars of Great Zimbabwe, Machhu Pichhu, Kailas, Skellig Michael, and so forth. Some of the Japanese sites might lack the grandeur of such famous places, but they more than make up for this in two important ways: they are generally off the beaten track and, when approached, have an intimacy that folds you back easily into the mythical world.
