Fruchtfolge
Eine der großen Herausforderungen der ökologichen Landwirtschaft besteht darin, die Böden auf natürliche Weise fruchtbar zu halten. Auf LaSelva hat sich eine 7 jährige Fruchtfolge bestens bewährt. Am Anfang werden 3 Jahre lang Stickstoffsammler gesät, die als Grünfutter oder Heu dienen. Das häufige Schneiden beseitigt Unkräuter bevor sie aussamen können, eine vorbeugende Maßnahme für spätere Kulturen.
Nach der Ernte des Hartweizens im vierten Jahr wird Mist gestreut und dann die Ackerbohne als Zwischenfrucht zur Gründüngung gesät. Erst im fünften Jahr werden anspruchsvolle und extensive Sonderkulturen wie Feldgemüse und Tomaten gepflanzt. Im sechsten Jahr folgen Futtergemenge und Winterweizen und schließlich im letzten Jahr Leguminosen, Ackerbohnen und Mais.
Naturgemäßer Pflanzenschutz
Zur Abwehr von Unkraut, Krankheits- und Insektenbefall sind alle vorbeugenden Maßnahmen wie geeignete Sortenwahl, Anbau- und Pflegeverfahren, minimale Düngung und Fruchtfolge von grundlegender Bedeutung. Wichtig ist auch die mechanische Bodenpflege mittels Maschinen oder kostbarer Handarbeit, d.h. der Einsatz von Striegel, Egge und Hackgeräten.
Ist ein Ökosystem im Gleichgewicht, hilft sich die Natur häufig selbst, indem sie gegen Schädlinge eine Selbstregulierung aufbaut und Insekten zu Nützlingen werden. Das lässt sich eindruckvoll am Beispiel der Blattläuse beobachten, die in den Marienkäfern einen mächtigen Gegenspieler finden, der Unmengen von Läusen verzehrt.
Lebendiger Boden
Nachhaltige Bodenfruchtbarkeit wird durch schonende Methoden der Bodenbearbeitung gefördert und gezielte Humuswirtschaft bewahrt. Zur organischen Düngung verwenden wir den strohreichen Mist aus den Laufställen der Rinder, der zuvor mit gehexeltem Baumschnitt vermischt, kompostiert wurde.
Wichtig ist auch die Gründüngung der Felder durch die Ackerbohne, die im Frühjahr als organische Masse in den Boden eingearbeitet wird und den Humusanteil im Boden erhöht. Außerdem sorgen in der Fruchtfolge tief wurzelnde Pflanzen wie Klee und Luzerne für ein reichhaltiges Bodenleben und Leguminosen führen dem Boden Luftstickstoff zu.
Tiere als belebendes Element
Die edlen, in der Toskana heimischen Chianina-Rinder sind ein integraler Bestandteil der ökologischen Landwirtschaft. Sie sind einerseits dankebare Futterverwerter der für die Fruchtfolge wichtigen Futtergemenge und Leguminosen und andererseits Produzenten von hochwertigem organischen Dünger.
Außerdem ist LaSelva als Zuchtbetrieb von Appennin Schafen anerkannt, die auf den abgeernteten Feldern und großen Weideflächen grasen. Da die Appennin Schafe keine Milchschafe sind, hat das Interesse an dieser Rasse stark nachgelassen. Wir wollen mit unserem kleinen Zuchtbetrieb zum Erhalt der Appennin Schafe beitragen.

Crop rotation
Maintaining fertility naturally and securing a good harvest without exhausting the soil is a key challenge in organic farming. On LaSelva, a 7 year crop rotation has proved most successful. It starts with three years of a nitrogen-fixing forage crop. The frequent cutting to provide fodder controls unwanted arable weeds before they shed seeds preventing weed problems in later crops.
Wheat is grown in the fourth year. This is followed by an application of farm-yard manure to stubbles in which a green-manure catch-crop of field beans is grown. The demanding crops such as field vegetables and tomatoes are grown in the fifth year. A mixed fodder crop (peas, vetch and oats) follows in the sixth year followed by winter wheat. Finally, field beans, maize or sorghum are grown in the final rotation year.
Crop protection in tune with nature
In organic farming, protecting crops against fungal and virus diseases, weeds and pests rely on the integration of the good selection of varieties, crop husbandry, minimised fertilisation, and crop rotation. Soil tillage and demanding hand work with rakes, harrows and hoes are also important.
When an ecosystem is in balance, nature often deals with pest problems itself through self-regulation when a careful and measured approach is taken. Greenfly illustrate this best. They can build up very quickly in early summer. Nature provides a powerful opponent in the form of ladybirds and their larvae who eat greenfly in large numbers.
Living soil
Conservation tillage helps sustain soil fertility and protects soil humus. Using composting, we conserve valuable humus. We use straw rich manure from housed cattle composted with wood chips to fertilise fields.
We use field beans which decompose in the winter and are worked into the soil in spring. In addition, deep rooted crops such as clover and luzerne enrich the soil with nitrogen and thus provide the following crops with this scarce nutrient.
Animals - a cherished element
The noble Chianina cattle, native to Tuscany, play a vital and integral role in the organic system serving to utilise the fodder and legume crops providing valuable organic manure.
In addition, LaSelva is a recognised breeder of Appenin sheep. They graze large meadows and the cereal stubbles after harvest. Because they are not used for milk production, the Appenin sheep are rare. We want to contribute with our small breeding flock to the conservation of the Appenin breed.
